There was a phone interview first, and the in person interview followed relatively quickly. I was interviewed by those I would report to, and was also able to meet the whole department when I came onsite for the interview.

Multiple, progressively more thorough interviews that result in a positive experience, even if you don't get the job.
multi-step using mulitple people- panel interview. not overly formal.
