Background checks
How would you describe your overall experience interviewing at Hearst?
Very positive experience. The recruiter outlined the process during our first call, and while there were several steps (in-person interviews, edit tests), I always felt like I was kept in the loop.
What's the Engineering team like at Hearst?
The group I work with is great. Very smart people, but we have lost others because of better opportunities elsewhere.
How's the leadership on the Engineering team at Hearst?
That's a joke. Every year seems to be a new direction because the last one failed.
How's the morale at Hearst?
I can only speak for my department. I would say the morale is low right now. Underpaid and overworked and no improvement in site. We get emails about how well the company is doing, but we never get any substantial raises. The only reason I'm still here is that I like the people I work with.
Are there any attractive people in your office?
That's an inappropriate question.
What do you look for in a new hire? is it hard to recruit someone good?
It can be hard. I look for relevant experience over raw skills. I get a lot of applicants who are right out of school but haven't worked with cloud infrastructure and big data outside of the classroom. I want people whoa re tested and proven in the real world, able to handle writing advanced SQL as well as being competent in a scripting language and with the cloud.
What kinda office layout do you have? Is it open or cubicles or something in between?
Top Employee Response
Open layout with low walls between rows of seats, and lots of glass-walled breakout rooms. No offices on our floor.

Top Employee Response
I would say yes... we've developed a number of innovative products using a variety of interesting, often cutting-edge technologies.
Are you allowed to work from home? Is the company remote-friendly?
