What are some of the best things about your team? The team meshes will on a personal level and a professionally level! I'm able to be 100% myself!
What is most positive about the culture and environment at your company? How inviting everyone is from the get go and willingness to listen to ideas!
What is the best part about your compensation package?San Francisco salary, but I'm able to live anywhere in the US!
What's going wrong and how can it be improved? This is the slowest engineering company I've ever worked for. Knowledge is silod and it feels like 80% of the work can be attributed to 20% of the people across all the orgs. We can't keep relying on those 20% to carry us forever as we grow.
What needs to change to make the company culture better?Less tolerance for undermining others, less helpless middle management, more actual leadership rather than just saying things they think leaders say.
What do your coworkers need to improve and how could you work together better?Less departmental politics, get a handle on the toxicity of some of the more established sales people.
Observability for software engineers.
honeycomb.io was founded in 2016 and its current CEO is Christine Yen. Since its inception 10 years ago, honeycomb.io has grown to 170 employees.
We help engineering teams deeply understand their own production systems through observability.
Honeycomb was founded by a software engineer (a “dev”) and an infrastructure engineer (an “ops”). We were determined to build a world of software ownership, and saw observability as the shared understanding necessary to get there. What began as a sociotechnical problem has evolved into a sociotechnical solution, in which tool choice is simply the catalyst for improved processes and culture on engineering teams.
Honeycomb is committed to reducing its impact on the environment. One way we do this is by choosing more sustainable storage engines like AWS Graviton, enabling us to be about 5x as carbon-efficient as alternative less sustainable solutions. To put this in perspective, if Honeycomb were to use alternative storage options, we'd likely be running more like 30-40 metric tons vs. the 8 we currently are. This is a direct result of sustainability-conscience choices we make.

We all have a place in DEI work. There is nobody in the company who is exempt from our DEI work or unimportant to it, it is nobody’s job and everybody’s job. We all have a place, we all have things to teach others, and we all have things we will need to learn in the process. While people on the internet may talk about DEI work as though there are people who are “DEI people”, we strive to all be on the same team and to create space for continuous learning. We honor a few tenets including: 1. The internet’s practices are not our practices. 2. We can and should prioritize some axes of diversity over others. 3. We prioritize marginalized people’s safety over privileged people’s comfort. 4. We work at a sustainable pace. 5. We treat each other with respect. 6. We balance focus on ALL three pillars: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
