What do your coworkers need to improve and how could you work together better at OnDeck?
Top Employee Response
My co-workers are/were fantastic people. They should just find a different job ASAP.
Some are experts in their field, others need to just say "this is not for me"
What needs to change to make the company culture better at OnDeck?
Top Employee Response
In the technology department, every person with "Director" in their title should be fired.
Put the right people in charge.
What's going wrong and how can it be improved at OnDeck?
Top Employee Response
The company keeps hiring/promoting incompetent Directors to manage teams in the technology department. These Directors are free to cause whatever mayhem they wish without being held accountable. The company takes action against said directors only when it is far too late. Additionally, the business model is broken. It is unfathomable that the company originates tens of thousands of loans a year with astronomical interest rates, and yet the company is unable to generate a profit. The way it can be improved is by creating a culture where managers are kept in check by employees.
Management
What does the leadership team at OnDeck need to get better at?
Top Employee Response
It needs to get better at actually using employee feedback in its decision making. Time after time, managers will offer a "comment period" after some big change, such as reogranization. Concerns are stated by employees, but no action is taken. It's really and empty exercise trying to talk to any manager now. It should also get better at not stabbing its employees in the back and engaging in blatant favoritism.
Re-evaluate their employee work experience. Some have no idea about what their role requires and do not have the experience for it.
How are the dental insurance options at OnDeck?
Not the best and not the worst.
How are the vision insurance options at OnDeck?
Same as at any other place.
What is the best perk or benefit that OnDeck offers?
If you are an incompetent employee and are likable, you get to enjoy decent pay with very few responsibilities. Managers will step up to defend you if you are well liked.
How are the managers in the HR department at OnDeck?
Nobody knows what they really do apart from sending out surveys once a quarter and shepherding the performance review cycle.
Hows employment stability for software engineers? Noticed A LOT of people posting comments about recent layoffs on various sites.
When times are good, it is stable. OnDeck is prone to overconfidence and gets into an over hiring mode. Once the business starts to slip, that is when layoffs come and lots of "new hires" become "new fires".
How would you compare interviewing at OnDeck to other places you've interviewed?
It's super easy. The bar to entry is so low compared to any other half-serious tech company.
How much diversity is there among employees at OnDeck?
It's very diverse. Silicon Valley could learn a thing or two from OnDeck.
How do you feel about going to work at OnDeck everyday?
I feel overwhelmed. Everyone is overworked, stressed, and underpaid considering all the responsibilities that they are handling.
How are the career growth opportunities on the Engineering team at OnDeck?
Depends on the team. But it's mainly java shop with postgress as the DB. For IC you can get to principal engineer and may be architect. If you want to do more of managerial stuff u can become tech lead and then director
What's the internship program like at OnDeck?

At present, we do not have a formal internship program but we hope to in the future!
We don't have one.
How's the feedback process at OnDeck?

While we believe in continuous, ongoing feedback throughout the year, our performance process is currently every six months. This includes a self evaluation, receiving feedback from your manager, colleagues and direct reports, and setting goals.
It is slow and not impartial.
What are the team outings like at OnDeck?

They vary by location, team and time of year! We aim to create experiences that bring people together and satisfy different interests. Opportunities include community involvement, team building events or annual summer/winter celebrations.
Eating in a cheap restaurant or escape the room game.
If you could make changes, how would you improve the culture at OnDeck?

We just refreshed our company values earlier this year and have assembled a Values team to help us define aspirational behaviors that will bring these values to life and help us have the culture we want and need to achieve our business objectives.
Reduce the number of managers we have and make the organization more flat. The leaders are getting in the way of getting things done.
Does OnDeck have any remote positions?
Yes, but you better be willing to accept very low pay.
How does OnDeck make decisions around promotions?
Top Employee Response
If the highest raking leadership likes you, you get a promotion every year, if not, twice a year. If they don't like you, you will hear lame excuses as to why you didn't get promoted.
How's the vacation policy at OnDeck?
You need to prove to your manager that it is in the best interest of the company that you take a vacation.
What are your coworkers at OnDeck like?
Top Employee Response
Sour and depressed mostly. You know you are stuck on the Titanic and some of us just can't do anything about it.
What do people at OnDeck think about the CEO? What do they do well and what can they improve?
The CEO is a nice guy and down to earth and probably very smart. The only thing is, he overdoes it with the hope stuff. Every company town hall we have, I'm always aware that he's trying to sell us on the great future of the company. I know what the reality on the ground is, and I just can't help but feel like he's fibbing to us everytime he steps on the stage.
What part of OnDeck's business is growing fastest? What part is having difficulties?
The only thing growing fast is the attrition rate, which leads to its greatest difficulty, retaining talent.
What benefits does OnDeck provide?
A lame 401(k) match, a weak equity package comprise of some RSUs, okay healthcare coverage.
What's the company culture like at OnDeck?
Top Employee Response
The company culture used to be energetic and fun, yet laid back at the same time. People work hard but within reasonable limits. There used to be plenty of company and team outings to celebrate achievements and milestones. Now the culture is very depressing and gloomy. People don't have much hope for the company and are struggling to find reasons to come back to work every day.
