Q&A With PTC Employees

Asked to all employees at PTC

  • That it has grown only by acquisition, and so has no cohesive culture, and therefore no ability to grow in healthy ways. That a 'chaotic' workplace doesn't even begin to describe the level of dysfunction that goes on minute to minute, not just day to day. That if you crave making order out of chaos, working for PTC Cloud Services will be your personal living hell.

Asked to all employees at PTC

  • Each division is so siloed, you can't see over the edge. In Cloud Services, it is like a death march. The only reason people don't leave is because they are either addicted to the work from home angle, or they don't have time enough to job search.

  • Some roles can be work from home, but these employees are left even further out of the corp culture than the office workers. Multiply that by a lot of off-shoring.

Asked to the IT Department at PTC

  • 50-60 hours is normal for Cloud Services. On call 24x7x365. Offshore resources work fewer hours and not on call, but are still driven like rented mules. A lot of management turnover, a lot of staff turnover or layoffs when the IT Dept is already at the bone. If you can imagine being chased by a locomotive across a trestle bridge with rotted ties while someone is shooting at you with a rifle, you've got the vibe about right.

Asked to the IT Department at PTC

  • Diverse, and not in a good way. Diverse in terms of corp. culture since they all came from different acquisitions, so there is no standard way of doing anything across divisions, work units, data centers. Several run 'n gun cowboys who fix things just well enough to get it working again, but not to make the fix permanent, so there are many avoidable failures. Some thoughtful folks to who want to lead change, but have no management support other than the directive of "faster, more intense."

Asked to the IT Department at PTC

  • Trapped in the 1990s. Have not embraced AGILE or DevOps. Perform quarterly layoffs, creating high turnover. Are running their whole SaaS environment on a skeleton staff, but keep insisting on grabbing new sales opportunities that require high CapEx and actual engineering to make impossible deadlines.
