This document outlines the various standards with which SparkFun is compliant. For information on compliance with laws or legal authorities please see our Guidelines for Law Enforcement. PCI Compliance SparkFun is fully compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) version 2.0. This standard covers the secure handling of cardholder data: Cardholder Data Any personally identifiable data associated with a credit card holder. This could be an account number, expiration date, name, address, social security number, etc. All personally identifiable information associated with the cardholder that is stored, processed, or transmitted is also considered cardholder data. SparkFun passes cardholder information through our servers to our payment gateway provided by FirstData. As such SparkFun is required to complete a Self Assessment Questionnaire at level D annually. SparkFun last submitted a completed SAQ-D August 26, 2015. SparkFun is also responsible for quarterly automated PCI scans by an approved scanning vendor (ASV). Our current ASV is ControlScan. Do Not Track Compliance SparkFun complies with the Do Not Track standard for respecting the wishes of visitors who wish to opt out of tracking technologies. See our Privacy Policy for more information. RoHS Compliance RoHS = Restriction of Hazardous Substance Directive Here is the European Union WEEE directive that started it all. If you’ve seen the trash can icon with an X imprinted on an electronic device, you’ve seen this directive in action. Basically it is a reduction in lead and other harmful materials in electronics and how these products are disposed of. As of July 1st, 2006 many of the electronic products being sold in the EU must be RoHS compliant. There are exceptions including electronics that fall into the “Control & Monitoring Equipment” which many SFE products can be described as. While the US has no legislation on use of lead in the manufacturing of electronics, we work hard to keep up with the rest of the world. Becoming lead-free was a huge pain, but we feel it’s important to limit our footprint on the world. So the ICs and the components on RoHS products produced by SFE are lead-free, the solder and solder paste that is used during construction contains no lead, and the printed circuit boards (PCBs) are produced in such a way to have no lead or mercury, and some fun chemicals like polybrominated diphenyl ethers are extremely limited. So if you see a product page with this symbol: RoHS then you’ll know the board, components, and soldering techniques are all lead-free, RoHS compliant, and a little less harmful for you, me, and the earth. We can only refund for up to 90 days from the date of the charge. After that time, we will need to refund with store credit or another method. PayPal If you select PayPal during checkout, you will be redirected to that website, then back to ours to complete your order. If your order has back orders, you may not be redirected to the PayPal site. This is because we do not take payment until your order is ready to ship. Once everything is in stock, we’ll send you a money request. Make sure your addresses are correct on our site. We do not verify any address information with PayPal. Offline Payment Use this option to get your order in the system now and handle payment later. It’s also useful if you need a quote to get a purchase approved. View ArticleThird Party Services Do Not Track Do Not Track is a standard for telling sites that you don’t want to be tracked. It’s aimed at sites you don’t visit directly, like advertisers and social media platforms. SparkFun supports the Do Not Track standard. While third party plugins with access to visitor browsing data are limited on sparkfun.com, all are disabled for visitors passing a Do Not Track HTTP header. This includes third party tools for analytics, live chat, and web optimization (described below). Email We use GMail, and mail sent to or from sparkfun.com addresses generally passes through Google’s servers. Promotional and informative mail sent to mailing lists, such as the newsletter, is sent using HubSpot. Automated mail sent from a triggering event, like a back-in-stock notification, is sent from sparkfun.com directly. All users with accounts can manage all subscriptions via the Email tab in Account Settings. All users can opt out of these lists by clicking Unsubcribe in the emails. See HubSpot’s privacy policy here. Shipping Providers and Export Control We offer shipping through third parties: FedEx, UPS, and the United States Postal Service (via a service called Endicia). We pass delivery addresses, phone numbers, and invoices to these companies to the extent required for quoting shipping prices and successful delivery of orders. We comply with United States export regulations and authorities. We use Visual Compliance to automatically screen billing and delivery addresses for potential export control violations. This entails transmission of customer billing and delivery address information to Visual Compliance servers. Payment Providers Credit Card payments are processed through FirstData. All credit card data including the cardholder name, credit card number, expiration date, CVV, and full billing address are sent to FirstData via an API for processing. Details regarding what products a customer is purchasing and other demographic information are not sent to FirstData. Each transaction is logged by retaining the transaction amount, the cardholder name, the last four digits of the credit card, and the card expiration date. No other credit card data is stored at any point on SparkFun servers. This is in full compliance with the PCI-DSS, which you can read more about in our Compliance Policy. PayPal is offered as a payment method. When using PayPal on sparkfun.com a user must provide their PayPal email address. The user will then be directed to paypal.com to complete their payment, after which they will be redirected to sparkfun.com to complete the order. Analytics SparkFun uses Google Analytics, HubSpot, DoubleClick, Facebook, and CrazyEgg to track aggregate behavior of visitors on sparkfun.com. Google Universal Analytics is a service hosted on Google’s servers, and is our primary analytics tool. It is activated by a JavaScript snippet that loads on every page to send visitor behavioral information to Google. SparkFun uses this information to understand how visitors use our site. Sometimes SparkFun will run A/B tests, where Google Analytics will track cookies set on users to divide them into groups that get slightly different pages to see which perform better. Visitors who have Do Not Track enabled will not have any information sent to Google’s servers for use in analytics. SparkFun also utilizes Google Analytics Demographics and Interest Reporting. This means we combine personally identifiable information about your SparkFun account, browsing, and shopping habits and merge it with Google’s tracking cookies, all of which goes to Google. This is enabled by default for all visitors to SparkFun.com. You can opt out of this by enabling Do Not Track headers in your browser or installing and enabling the Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-on. Content Hosting We serve image files (like product images) and other resources from Amazon’s CloudFront. Uses can choose to display a Gravatar associated with the email address on their account. This will expose a hash of the address to the public web and to Gravatar, which may be a privacy concern. Chat and Search We use Olark to offer chat features. Unless a user is browsing with Do Not Track enabled, a small JavaScript fragment is loaded from Olark’s servers on each page. Olark’s Terms of Service We use Swiftype to provide search results on sparkfun.com for products, blog posts, tutorials, wish lists, and other content. The text of search strings is sent from our servers to Swiftype. We do not send any information about customers to Swiftype. Social Media We maintain accounts on various social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, Flickr, GitHub, YouTube, Ello, and Instagram, and Tumblr. While some of these platforms are themselves invasive of user privacy, we will do our best to apply the principles outlined in the rest of this policy to our use of social media. We do not make use of third-party social media badges or widgets which function as trackers. Ticketing/CRM We use Desk.com, Salesforce, and HubSpot to manage and prioritize customer contacts, including those by email, phone, chat, and social media.

We do not sell complete products, instead we sell various electronic pieces that can be assembled to create many different types of projects and end-user products. What User Information Does SparkFun Have? User information is held by SparkFun in accordance with our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. We require a subpoena, court order, or other valid legal process to disclose information about our users. Some user profile information is public, so anyone can see it. A SparkFun user profile may contain various comments the user has posted, and at the user’s option may display a profile image hosted by Gravatar. In addition, the user has the option to fill out an alias and several short biographical fields for display on their public profile. Please see our Privacy Policy for more information on the data we collect from users. Public profile information is provided at the user’s discretion. It is not verified by SparkFun and may be inaccurate. Data Retention SparkFun retains different types of information for different time periods. SparkFun does not retain IP address information for more than 60 days. In accordance with PCI Compliance requirements, SparkFun does not retain detailed credit card information. Private Information Requires a Subpoena or Court Order In accordance with our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, non-public information about SparkFun users is not released except as lawfully required by appropriate legal process such as a subpoena, court order, or other valid legal process. Requests for User Information SparkFun Electronics Inc is located in Niwot, Colorado and will only respond in compliance with U.S. law to valid legal process. For example, requests for contents of communication require a U.S. search warrant. Requests From Non-U.S. Law Enforcement U.S. law authorizes SparkFun to respond to requests for user information from foreign law enforcement agencies that are issued via U.S. court either by way of a mutual legal assistance treaty or a letter rogatory. It is our policy to respond to such U.S. court ordered requests. Will SparkFun Notify Users of Requests for Account Information? Yes. SparkFun’s policy is to notify users of requests for their information prior to disclosure unless we are prohibited from doing so by statute or court order (e.g., an order under 18 U.S.C. 2705(b)). What Information Must Be Included? When requesting information, your request must include: The customer name and any products in question (e.g., Bob Johnson and accelerometers), Details about what specific information is requested and its relationship to your investigation, A valid e-mail address so we may get back in touch with you upon receipt of your legal process. View ArticleWhen you talk to our support teams If you email us, chat with us, or call us on the telephone for support we can and most of the time will record the interaction. This is done so for training and audit purposes and the private conversations between customers and support staff are never sold to or shared with third parties (except when a third party tool, such as email or our chat service, is used to make the interaction possible). Logging and Log Retention In order to understand traffic to our sites and diagnose technical problems, we log individual web requests. These logs include time of request, individual IP address, referer, and user agent strings. We may retain these logs for up to 60 days, although individually-identifying information will be obscured after one week. In order to prevent fraud and detect malicious behavior, we log IP addresses for specific actions, such as creating a customer account and placing an order. This information is automatically deleted after no more than 60 days. Except in the case of malicious traffic, we will not share log data with any third party, unless compelled by legal process to do so. Cookies, Tags, Tracking Pixels, and HTTPS We use cookies, tags, and tracking pixels to know when users are logged in to SparkFun services and to track preferences such as display currencies and the rendering of product menus. Our analytics software, DoubleClick and CrazyEgg, use tags/tracking pixels to help keep track of how many unique visitors we’re getting, where they come from, and how they navigate our site, unless you’re browsing with Do Not Track enabled. We use this information to inform site improvements. We do our best to serve all content securely over HTTPS.

We may be in contact when an order requires payment before shipping or if other issues prevent us from fulfilling an order. We will send you email to verify your email address or if you request a password reset. We may send you email to request reviews of our products or feedback on your experience with our website, products, or customer support. We will notify users if we believe their privacy has been compromised, if it is within our power to do so. For example, if we discover a customer’s account user login information has been exposed elsewhere on the web, or if we are compelled to disclose information to law enforcement. We offer a set of opt-in email subscriptions for things such as newsletters, in-stock notifications for products, and comment reply notifications. You can control your subscriptions (when logged into your account) on the Email Notifications page. All new customers are signed up to our main newsletter by default, and SparkFun may at any time add all new and all existing customers to existing and new newsletters at our discretion. We may occasionally send you an email that you did not request or trigger with an action of any kind in order to promote a certain aspect of our site, products, or services.

View ArticlePreorders and backorders are essentially the same thing: a way to buy stuff that’s not in stock. The only difference is that preorders are items that have never been in stock, but will be soon. They’re both handled the same way. Not all products can be backordered when they go out of stock. If an out of stock item can be backordered it will clearly display a “Backorder” button, otherwise it cannot be backordered by any means. There are two types of backorders: Intentional and Accidental. Intentional Backorders This is when you, the customer, add an out-of-stock item to your cart by clicking the “Backorder” button. We do not charge for intentionally backordered items until they are ready for shipment. If your cart contains only backordered items, there will be no charge submitted at checkout. When everything is in stock and the order is ready to be shipped, a charge will be submitted via the payment method you selected at checkout. If you have some in-stock and some backordered items, you will see a checkbox on the shopping cart page that says “Ship Complete Order”. If you check this box, no charge will be submitted at checkout, and we will hold all in-stock items for you while we wait for the backordered ones to arrive. Once all your items are in stock, the full charge will be submitted and the order shipped. If you do not check this box, we will charge for all in-stock items and the initial shipping/handling upon submission of the order. Once your backordered items are available, we will charge for the products, and a second shipping/handling fee if applicable. You will receive notification of 2 separate orders: one for the in-stock items and one for the backordered items. Please Note: If you choose to have in-stock items ship now and backordered items later, a shipping/handling charge may apply to each shipment. Shipping charges will be clearly displayed at time of checkout. Accidental Backorders This is when our website indicated that there was stock available for your order, but we were actually out. D'oh! We work very hard to keep our stock numbers accurate. This type of backorder is rare, but there are a variety of issues that can lead to inaccuracies. We apologize for any inconvenience. We will ship all in-stock items right away, with the backordered items shipping as soon as they are available. They will ship via the same shipping method you selected during checkout. You will not be charged additional shipping. A second order number will be generated to accommodate the accidentally backordered items.

Click “My Account” in the upper right. Click “Order History.” Click the red “Need to change something?” button on the line of the order you’re looking for (it’s next to the Order ID). Enter a brief note letting us know what you’d like to do. Click “Pause Order.” We’ll take it from there. You can ask us to change the items on your order, update an address or payment method, or just cancel it. Customer Support will get back to you by email within one business day regarding your request. If you ask us to add items to your order, unless otherwise directed, we will submit the charge to the original card/account. Only orders that are still in New Order can be paused. Packing - All stock has been pulled for your order. It is now waiting to be packed up. No changes to your order are possible once it is in this status or further. Shipped - Your order has been completely packaged and moved to our shipping dock. It’s ready to go! You should receive an email that your stuff is on the way to you (with a tracking number if your shipping method is tracked). Nope, no changes to your order in this status either. Other Statuses You May Encounter Exception - This indicates your order needs human interaction before it can be released for shipment. This is often the case with lithium batteries, export control issues, and orders you have requested be paused for changes. Orders in Exception status usually get cleared quickly. We will contact you if we need additional information. PayPal Waiting For Payment - Either we’re waiting for your PayPal echeck to clear (it takes a few days), or we’ve sent you a payment request (watch your email for a notification from PayPal.) We still can’t ship to Cuba normally, but that is theoretically changing sooner than later. Everywhere else is groovy. Most international shipments will incur additional fees in the form of duties and taxes. These fees are your responsibility, and are in addition to the shipping cost we charge at checkout. See Duties and Taxes below for details. For all international shipments, we charge a $2 handling fee plus the shipping estimate from the carrier. Shipping Methods For shipping addresses outside the US, we offer 7 options: FedEx - (tracked and insured) FedEx International Priority - 1-3 business days, longer for rural FedEx International Economy - 3-5 business days, longer for rural UPS - (tracked and insured) UPS Worldwide Express Saver - 1-3 business days, longer for rural UPS Worldwide Expedited - 3-5 business days, longer for rural United States Postal Service USPS Express Mail International - usually 5-10 business days. Trackable. Only allowed for orders up to $300 in value. Delivery is made by the destination country’s postal service. USPS First Class Mail International - usually 2-4 weeks, but can take 6 weeks or more. NOT trackable. Only allowed for orders up to $300 in value. Delivery is made by the destination country’s postal service. Please Note - First Class Mail International packages are NOT insured. In the case a package is lost or damaged in transit, SparkFun is not responsible for replacing the order. International Economy SparkFun’s International Economy Shipping option, also known as FedEx International Mail Service (FIMS), is carried by FedEx to your country, then handed off to the local postal service for delivery with standard mail. This shipping option will deliver to PO Boxes. Shipping time varies greatly depending on destination. Delivery is usually made in 2-4 weeks, but can take as long as 6 in some cases. Only allowed for orders up to $300 in value. Economy is not an insured shipping method. As such, SparkFun is not responsible for replacing the package should it be lost in transit. There is no tracking available for this shipping method. Duties and Taxes All duties and taxes for international shipments are the responsibility of the customer. SparkFun is not responsible for any extra charges once the original package has been shipped. We can’t tell you exactly what the charges will be, but here’s a duty calculator to help with estimation. If the customer refuses to pay these extra charges, the return shipping and any additional fees will be taken out of the cost of the order with any remaining funds being refunded to the customer. View ArticleIf your shipping address is in Colorado you can opt to pick up your order in person at our office. We do not charge for this service. Our address is: SparkFun Electronics 6333 Dry Creek Parkway Niwot, CO 80503 Click here for a map. All Local Pickup orders must be prepaid. For accounting reasons, we do not accept cash, check, or money orders as payment for them. We package Local Pickup orders 3 times a day. If your order is placed by 10AM, it will be ready by noon. If your order is placed by noon, it will be ready by 2PM. If your order is placed after noon, it will be available for pickup at 10AM the following business day. One exception to this rule: if your order goes directly into the Exception status, it may not be ready at the time stated. You may pick up your order between 10am and 4pm, Monday though Friday, but please make sure it is ready. When your order progresses to the Ready For Pickup status, you will receive an email letting you know it is, well, ready for pickup. If your order is in another status, give us a call to find out why. Your Local Pickup order will be available at our front desk for two weeks once it’s prepared. View ArticleReturn to Sender Packages Packages can be returned to us for many reasons. Depending on the reason for return, there may be additional charges applied to your order. Please read below for more information. Packages can be returned to us for missing or incorrect address information. Please take a moment to check and make sure your address book is up to date. There is also an order review page where you can double check this information. If the carrier you select charges us to return the package, we will either a) deduct that from your refund if you want to cancel or b) if you choose to re-ship the package it will be added to the cost of the re-shipment fee. Packages can be returned to us if they are refused at customs for any reason. Sometimes we choose to get these packages back. If there are any customs fees and shipping charges to return your order, this will be deducted from the refund (if you want to cancel the order) or added to the re-shipment fee if you want to re-ship the order. Please see our Shipping Policy for additional information regarding international orders Please note that if your package is marked to be returned to SparkFun, it could take longer than expected to receive as these packages are not marked as a priority from the shipping company.
