  • Ideally for them, you would be a conformist. If you believe in doing things fairly or try to push for equal pay, fair hiring practices, etc, be prepared to fight a losing battle. It was the most dysfunctional HR team I've ever been a part of. It definitely taught me what not to do.

Asked to the Engineering Department at Spotify

  • There is no real centralized engineering team. The CTO position was recently eliminated. Rather each department, which are called Missions, has their own Engineering leadership. In some missions it's really good in others it's less good, especially if it's newer people. Hit or miss.

  • It depends. If you're a recent hire you probably have a good salary, especially if you're more senior. Retention is not good; compensation doesn't keep up. HR denies managers the power to give appropriate raises to keep up with the market. HR denies the ability to make competitive counter offers. I would say that in general the compensation situation is pretty poor.

HR needs to be removed and started over from scratch. Gender discrimination especially subtle but still existing kinds, is rampant. Everyone knows it. Everyone is powerless. HR refuses to do anything and bullies anyone who tries. HR also refuses to pay to retain good employees. If you like your work and are good at it, no choice but to go somewhere else to grow and be paid.
