  • I have high expectations going forward, the bank is experiencing great year over year growth and gaining quite heavily on competitors in our stomping ground (in Oregon we are 4th in market position and gaining, beating out most national banks). I have faith in the new CEO and we are rolling out a new program that I think will upend the financial sector when it comes to service levels ( https://bff.umpquabank.com/ ) it is an app produced by our fintech development arm, Pivotus, a international collaboration, giving customers to text a banker with any questions they may have. We are able to do anything that does not require cash, and the app can be a concierge service or just for random financial questions(like what is an ETF?). aside from the service and convenience what sets it apart from other chat systems is you have 1 consistent banker or "BFF" day after day you work with. so the same person that helped you with your debit card last month will help you again today.

  • For a UA in a retail store, it really depends on the store and the demographic. I was a "rover" for the company for a time and there are some stores where you are doing 100+ transactions daily but its all quick and easy so it's nice(generally low-income places) or middle class demographic generally has a steady work pace of fewer people you deal with but a bit more complicated things. Upper class even fewer people but some crazy complex stuff, I just moved from a location in Alberta district of Portland (in process of gentrification, trendy small business hub, common weekend destination for people) It was stupidly busy, I was having 3-4 new account sessions per day on average in addition to whatever back office nonsense. when I was on teller row it was easily 100+ transactions daily. Now I have moved to Lake Oswego (very upper class, can walk 10min and find some mansions) and it is like 15% of the foot traffic and new account sessions but every second customer has a 45min issue.

  • Pretty challenged, the UA program gets you cross-trained in teller work/loan(unsecured and secured) apps/new deposit accounts/wires/notary/small business and some more random stuff. I was fast-tracked a bit but I am trained for everything except the business stuff (generally store managers and lead UA's only) in about a year and a half. Aside from all the training and different hats the company has high standards (we answer the phone company-wide as "thank you for calling the world's greatest bank, this is _____ how can I help you"). I would say the challenge is easily worth it, benefits are good and the company culture is great, I also have pretty high expectations for the future for the company. Also just as a career advancement move, you can play 2 years in a UA role at Umpqua into a nice move into another bank where had you started at teller there it would have taken you 3-5 years to get to the same place training wise.
