  • Sustainability is an important and increasingly emotive topic. Because we know how important this is for our customers, we’ve started a lengthy piece of work to investigate how MOO could be more sustainable and the areas we could prioritize.

To help us do this, we’ve partnered with an external sustainability organization, who have over 20 years of expertise. As part of this piece of work, we have surveyed our suppliers, customers and external experts, along with our employees. It was really important to gather all of these thoughts to help shape and prioritize what we do.

We have lots of great, rich information from these findings and are working on short, mid and long term initiatives for MOO. The short term ones are things you can expect to see being worked on over the next few months and we will communicate specific initiatives as soon as we can.

In the meantime, within our current product offering we give customers the opportunity to choose recycled options, such as our Cotton T-Shirt paper we introduced in 2017, and have recently introduced more sustainable packaging options and will continue to roll these out across our product range where possible. All of our papers are sourced sustainably, upholding the highest standards of sustainable forestry. We look forward to sharing news on our upcoming sustainable initiatives.

Our Customer Service team is happy to answer any further questions you may have.

  • To help as many people as possible, MOO accepts a range of different formats. These are: GIF, PNG, JPEG, PDF.

These are the formats we would recommend:

For photography: high resolution JPEGs (preferably un-compressed)

For Graphics or Text: print-ready, vector based PDFs

For a mix of graphics and photography: print-ready PDFs

    Design file formats

Graphics and text designs (basically, any non-photographic content) are best submitted as vector based PDFs. This will ensure your lines and text are nice and crisp. If you upload JPEGs or PNGs, there may be some fuzziness around your text.

You should also make sure that there are no cut or crop lines, all transparencies have been flattened, overprint is switched off and any fonts used are embedded, before saving your designs. For best results, we recommend using the following preset to preflight your designs: Adobe PDF/X-1a:2001.

    Photo file formats

You can upload photos in the same format you import them from your digital camera (normally JPEG). We do however accept the following file formats: JPEG, PNG and PDF.

Please note: we do not accept RAW files.

Special Finish (Spot Gloss and Foils) file formats

For the design (ink) layer of your Special Finish Cards we accept all file types (PDF, JPEG, PNG).

For the element (Spot Gloss or Foils) layer of your Special Finish Cards we accept only vector PDF files, saved in black and white. Within this file, it's advised that you use a CMYK value of 0/0/0/100 for the black parts which will denote the elements to print in Spot Gloss or Foil.

  • The overall turnaround time of your order will be calculated by both the production speed and delivery method selected at checkout. Please note that certain products can be produced faster than others and we offer both economy and expedited shipping services to suit all needs.

We've made an online cost calculator which you can use to review the available turnaround options for each product and delivery destination.

Simply select your chosen product(s), quantity, and shipping destination. We'll then show you the total product cost, as well as the available shipping and handling options. If you are concerned about shipping turnaround, we always recommend a more expedited, trackable shipping method to ensure timely delivery.

Please note the delivery options may vary when checking out based upon the time you order; next day shipping is only available on certain products if ordering before 2pm (EST).

  • If your product(s) print duller or darker than expected, please contact us and we’d be happy to reprint with amended artwork.

Colours displayed on screen will always look much brighter and more vibrant than the final printed colours, so you may need to compensate for this when editing your images.

We recommend previewing and editing your files in CMYK with the assigned colour profile Coated GRACoL 2006 in an outside design editing software. From here, you may choose to adjust your brightness (for photos), or CMYK colour values (for vector/text-based designs).

Once you’re happy with your adjustments, save your updated files and send them to us for the reprint. We recommend JPG for photos or PDF for vector/text-based designs.

  • Bleed, safe area and trim

The printing process isn’t perfect, so to make sure your cards come out looking the best they can there are a few guidelines to follow. What we’re talking about are the Safe Area, Bleed, and Trim.

While these sound like complex (and painful) print terms, but they are actually quite simple once you get to know them.

    Safe Area

This is an area within the trim where any text, important parts of photos, logos, and other critical parts of your design should be kept, otherwise it may get cut off.

    Trim

The final size of your cards is referred to as the trim size. This is where we aim to cut your cards.

    Bleed

This is the area outside of the trim line that will get cut off, and while it ultimately gets removed it’s still important to the overall production of your product.

Tip: Looking for design templates with exact sizes? to get yours for Illustrator, Photoshop, and more.

    Bleed

Whether you’re using a photo or a solid color, you’ll want to make sure that the background of your design extends through and fills the bleed area. This makes sure that your design reaches all the way to the end of the card when trimmed and will prevent any ugly white edges.

Tip: Sometimes bleed issues like to hide in the pink area, so make sure to review your PDF Proof closely

When using photos you’ll want to make sure there is plenty of extra space around the focal point of the image, so the unimportant part of the photo can fill the bleed area and the important part is in the safe area. We don’t want anyone’s head to get cut off.

    Safe area

To keep all of the important stuff on your cards, not the cutting room floor, you’ll need to make sure all essential text and parts of images are kept within the safe area. The safe area is placed far from the trim line, but if something were to sneak outside of the safe area it wouldn’t be protected from the big, bad blades of our cutting machines.. We also recommend providing a little extra room for your design to breath inside the safe area, just in case.

    Border recommendations

In general we suggest avoiding borders, as they can come out lopsided or uneven. Although if you want to use a border, we recommend extending it at least 2mm within the safe area. This is to make sure that any inaccuracy during the cutting process is less noticeable.

  • MOO's printers use a 4 color ink process (CMYK). Please be aware that screen colors (RGB) may appear duller or lacking in contrast when printed.

Always preview your work in CMYK where possible.

We use public ICC profiles, so if you preview and save your files using the 'Coated GRACOL 2006' colorspace, they will not be altered by our back end processes.

To set the correct color space for your PDF, click on the 'output' option shown on the left of your screen when you select the 'Adobe PDF/X-1a:2001' preset. In the 'color' box, select 'Coated GRACOL 2006' from the destination dropdown.

Please note, we don'toffer any spot color or any pantone matching, so its best to remove them from yourPDFs and ensure only CMYK color values.

This video explains the difference between RGB and CMYK.

  • When creating your products online you may be shown an error message warning you of potential print problems that you’ll need to check. These error messages will appear as either a yellow or red exclamation mark alongside the corresponding issue within your design. If you use your cursor to hover over any design error messages shown, you will be given a description of the potential problem and often tips for fixing it.

If you’re seeing a yellow error message, you can override the warning and proceed to checkout. However, if you choose to do so, your design may arrive with some issues. We’d always recommend reviewing and addressing any error message during the design stages so that you can make adjustments to your designs if necessary.

If you’re seeing a red error message, you cannot override the warning and will be unable to proceed to checkout. If this happens, you will need to review the warning and either make the necessary changes to your design or use an alternative design file where appropriate.

If you’re unsure of the problem that either error message indicates, you can contact our Customer Service team who will be happy to look into it for you

  • All products are shipped from our US warehouse and therefore any orders being shipped internationally may incur customs charges. A customs charge or tariff may be assessed when goods are transported across international borders, depending on the weight and value of the parcel as well as local guidelines. Due to this, please note that MOO cannot take responsibility for these charges.

In addition, we cannot confirm whether a customs fee or tariff will be charged or not at the time of placing an order, as this will depend on whether the parcel is selected for inspection by border control.

For orders shipping to Canada, all handling charges including taxes, customs and courier fees will be assessed and paid for when checking out on the MOO website, so no customs charges should be required at the point of delivery.

  • When printing your cards, MOO uses a digital halftone CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) printing process. This means we use small dots of these 4 inks to produce all color. Our printer mixes and overlaps grids of these dots at varying sizes and distances from each other to create the illusion of tones.

Lighter colors use fewer or smaller dots, as the paper showing through is what lightens the color. The dots being further apart means they are more visible and can result in thin lines and the edges of shapes or letters to start to look broken when reviewed close up. We recommend using thicker lines and darker colors whenever possible, as larger dots will be used to fill the white space of the paper resulting in a more consistent appearance.

  • When uploading your artwork to create your products you do not need to use crop marks within your files.

Here at MOO we print using a bleed and safe area which does not require crop marks, instead our bleed and safe area specifications will help us to identify where to trim your product(s). If your design files contain crop marks please make sure to remove them before uploading to our site or these could print on your final product(s). You can find our product templates and design specifications here.

  • Pre-designing cards before you upload to MOO is something we only recommend to design professionals, or those very comfortable with graphics applications. Some technical knowledge is required to use the templates, and to save your work in the best format for print.

    Below you'll find helpful tips:

4 Rules for Designing the Perfect Fit:

Make sure you've accounted for the 'bleed' in your design, filling this area with any background colours or images. Ensure all important parts of your design are kept within the safe area.

Where possible designs featuring graphics or text should be submitted as vector based PDFs. To keep your text in vector format, we recommend applications like Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign and more recent versions of Adobe Photoshop. Please note, saving text in JPEG format could result in 'fuzzy' edges.

When your design features a mix of photography and text, make sure your placed photographs are 300 dpi, and where possible that your final design is saved as a PDF.

Make sure you pre-flight your PDFs using the 'Adobe PDF/X-1a:2001' preset. This option can be found in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign and more recent versions of Adobe Photoshop. Also, ensure yousave each design as a separate single page PDF - we don't accept multi-page files on upload.

  • You will need to create and upload two files - one for the design file and one for your Element layer. The black parts of your Element layer will denote which parts of your design we apply the Spot Gloss or Foil to. Anything white won’t be printed with any Foil or Spot Gloss.

We recommend the following settings to yield the best possible output:

Design file - vector based PDF, saved in CMYK - this will be printed the same way as all standard MOO products.

Element/Mask Layer - CMYK (black and white: 0/0/0/100), vector based PDF only - the black parts of the design will be printed with Foil or Spot Gloss.

    Design Templates

Please use your Elements wisely and for best results, follow these handy tips:

Foil: Treat the foil as its own color that will print on top of the rest of your design, obscuring what’s underneath. Foil should not replicate anyelements of your Design file to prevent a messy halo effect.

Spot and Raised Spot Gloss: Think of Gloss as an enhancement to your existing design. Any design element it is printed over will appear shiny and slightly raised.

Use black & white files only for the element files, and use a CMYK value of 0/0/0/100 for the black parts.

Use vector-based PDF artwork for the element layer. Low-quality artwork can make the Foils or Gloss come out jagged and vector PDFs will help prevent this:

You can use ourto create the perfect fit using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign or Photoshop.
