
Most people choose to work for the American Cancer Society because of the why behind it... to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The unfortunate thing about it is that because it is a volunteer driven organization, staff needs are often neglected. Volunteers are asked to do a lot and eventually a lot of burnout happens between both staff and volunteers. In addition, the organization continues to reinvent itself every two years causing huge disruptions causing major staff turnover, volunteer turnover, and the loss of very talented individuals due to upper management choosing far less qualified individuals because of personal relationships held. It is one thing to get underpaid for what you do for the bigger purpose, but to not have a secure role when you're a consistent top performer because you didn't fit in someones ideal sandbox is truly unfortunate. Volunteers then see the organization lose great people and then in turn start to lose faith in ACS.
