Executive Bio

Mr. Ian Kalin has been Chief Data Officer at eHealth, Inc. since May 2017. Mr. Kalin served as a Director of Open Data at Socrata, Inc. since September 2013. He joined Socrata from the White House, where he served as a Presidential Innovation Fellow. He led the U.S. Energy Data Initiative, leveraging open data to spur entrepreneurship, empower citizens and support economic growth. As the U.S. Department of Commerce's first chief data officer he oversaw data strategy and pioneered new products that transformed the way government agencies accomplish their missions. He also has relevant private-sector experience. As a consultant, he helped Google develop a strategy for working with open data, performance metrics and data standards. He served as Managing Director of The San Francisco at Power Advocate, Inc, he provided supply chain insights to the energy sector for over $30 billion of construction projects. He started his career as an officer in the U.S. Navy. He is the co-author of several publications on open data, including: Open Government Data Spurs Entrepreneurship and Jobs, The Next GPS of Data, and A Fleet of Data in U.S. Vehicles. He has received a Robert Seamans Fellowship at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government for leadership of technology and public policy. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Studies from Georgetown University in International Politics, as well as a Masters of Engineering Management from Old Dominion University.
