What do people at KONE think about the CEO? What do they do well and what can they improve?
The CEO is very nice and seems to have a good head on his shoulders. He is from outside the industry so there is internal questions as to whether he’s actually suited for the position. But those conversations are generally revolving around the nepotistic nature of the elevator industry. Within any big corporation there is always the dueling desires for both long-term growth and short-term profits. That is uniquely prevalent at KONE. And no one, currently, has seem to come up with an appropriate answer to this dilemma.
If you could make changes, how would you improve the culture at KONE?
The incentive plan is all over the board creating competing departments. The sales incentive program is also relatively asinine. They try to put plans in place to keep sales people selling throughout the year but the incentive is so low that if a sales person is able to hit their number early you can plan on them skating for the rest the year. Also, there is not a culture of collaboration and candor. Many seem nice but in reality want nothing to do with you. Also, there are people who view honesty as combative and so avoided at all costs.
What part of KONE's business is growing fastest? What part is having difficulties?
Construction is growing the fastest while service is taking a nosedive.
What's the interview process like at KONE?
First, you’ll get a call from an internal recruiter asking some basic questions. Second, you’ll get a call to set up an on-site interview. Third you’ll be called back for a second on-site interview with a higher level individual. Then they will make a decision.

What's the office vibe like at KONE?
Mild. Even if a storm is brewing it doesn’t appear that many people get fired up about it
How's the work life balance at KONE?
Fine. However, I have seen strong-willed managers take advantage of weak-willed subordinates.
How does KONE make decisions around promotions?
To get from the branch to the district level is actually really difficult based solely on merit. It really depends upon who you know and where you’re willing to go. However, once you reach a higher level the movement from one position to another seems relatively easy. And the actual knowledge base you must have diminishes. It strikes me that upper management put more emphasis on the persons flexibility as well as giving them a broader range of experience so it becomes a snowball effect when it comes time for promotion.
How's the vacation policy at KONE?
Time off is pretty easy to get but sometimes the managers have very weird request in how you ask for it. Such as multiple emails and calendar invites as well as CCing multiple branches. Weird.
How much and how often do raises happen at KONE?
Annually for the most part unless you really know how to negotiate.
What's the best part of your job at KONE?
I got a cool backpack when I started
How difficult is it to maintain a social life while in your job at KONE?
Depends on the office and the manager. Big markets have a lot of pressure to perform but mid to low markets have relatively little pressure to work extra hours.

There is an internal survey that takes place every year but little has resulted from the survey.

If you want to succeed in your job you should keep your head down, do your work and learn what processes you can actually avoid and still accomplish all your tasks. If you want to advance within the ranks of KONE it is very much a culture of “who you know “.
How can I improve my chances of being hired at KONE?
If you can highlight how and how quickly you can implement means of efficiency you’ll be a rockstar here.

What unique perks and benefits does KONE provide?
Pension for office workers. But obviously you have to work here for 20 years for that to really matter.

Relatively low diversity
How's the morale at KONE?
This depends on what district you’re in. The district leadership has a heavy role and the morale of the people within its confines. I would say the morale overall is OK. But, you have to take into account that it’s in direct correlation to a mid tier company trying to keep up playing on the field with the big boys.
What's one thing you wish you'd known before joining KONE?
They are pretty cheap when it comes to internal spending. They give superintendents pretty cheap trucks that the supers actually have to pay for. If you’re in a major city offices are actually pretty nice. But if you’re lucky enough to be in a smaller market the offices harken back to 1970s. The systems and processes they use are severely antiquated and reflect the inability or unwillingness to spend money on technology.
