Mr. Douglas L. Becker, also known as Doug, founded Laureate Education, Inc.in 1998 and its Non-Executive Chairman since January 1, 2018. Mr. Becker was Co-Founder & Special Limited Partner of Sterling Partners in 1983. Mr. Becker has extensive operating, strategy and financial acumen, coupled with an entrepreneurial background and deep domain knowledge in the education sector. Since co-founding Sterling Partners in 1983, Mr. Becker has been instrumental in shaping its strategy, building teams and managing growth???transitioning Sterling Partners into one of the most prominent mid-market private equity groups in the U.S. and abroad. Mr. Becker is the Chairman of Sterling portfolio company Laureate Education, Inc. (formerly Sylvan Learning Systems) since February 2000 until January 1, 2018 . Since Mr. Becker took the helm in 2000, Laureate Education has transformed from a domestic tutoring provider into the world's leading international higher-education company with operations across 20 countries. Mr. Becker also works with Sterling portfolio investment Meritas. In 1983, Mr. Becker and three other Sterling Partners founders co-founded LifeCard, an innovative business venture that established the foundation for Sterling's tradition of excellence. In 1985, LifeCard was acquired by Blue Cross Blue Shield in Maryland, reflecting the early entrepreneurial aptitude of the Sterling founders. Today, Mr. Becker applies his background and abilities to build out teams, refine strategy and scale businesses. He brings people together who have unmatched experience in building, growing and managing companies. Mr. Becker helps to continually bolster the Sterling network of resources that teams draw upon to accelerate the growth of Sterling portfolio companies. Mr. Becker's capabilities are reflected in his work with organizations like Laureate Education. Today, Laureate Education offers degree programs to more than 500,000 students through its network of 30 universities and institutes in Europe, Asia and the Americas. He holds Doctor of Humane Letters at Honoris Causa at Towson University and Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa at Loyola College. His Interests are, Mr. Becker established the Sylvan Learning Foundation (now known as the Sylvan/Laureate Foundation) in 1997, to provide support for education initiatives in Baltimore and around the world. He is currently a board member of Constellation Energy Group, a Fortune 100 energy company. His commitment to the community is reflected in his role as Board Chair of the International Youth Foundation, a global non-profit focused on youth employment and youth leadership, primarily in developing countries. He was also Founding Chairman of Port Discovery, The Baltimore Children's Museum.
