Russell L. Holman M.D. — Chief Medical Officer & National Physician Advisory Board Chairman at LifePoint Health

Dr. Russell L. Holman, also known as Rusty, M.D. has been the Chief Medical Officer of LifePoint Health, inc. (formerly known as LifePoint Hospitals, Inc.) since February 11, 2013. Dr. Holman serves as the Chair of the leadership development Taskforce and as Course Director for the Society of Hospital Medicine Leadership Academy. He served as Chief Clinical Officer of Cogent HMG, Inc., and served as its Chief Operating Officer since November 20, 2006. Dr. Holman managed programs for physician training and mentoring, physician reporting and decision support and oversees continued improvements to Cogent best practice guidelines and audit programs that identify and remove barriers to high quality and efficient care. He served as the President of the Board of Directors of the Society of Hospital Medicine. Dr. Holman served as National Medical Director of Cogent HMG, Inc. (alternate name Cogent Healthcare Inc.) since January 2005 and served as its Senior Vice President since January 2006. He served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Holman has more than 15 years of healthcare leadership experience in academic centers, managed care, corporate and community hospital settings. He served as an Associate Medical Director and medical director of hospital services of HealthPartners Medical Group in Minneapolis, where he founded one of the country's largest hospitalist programs and managed the division of hospital services. Dr. Holman created one of the first hospitalist fellowship programs in the nation and led numerous quality improvement initiatives across the health system. He serves as Chairman of National Physician Advisory Board at LifePoint Health, inc. He served on the HealthPartners Medical Board of Governors. He was named the Department of Medicine Teacher of the Year in 1997 and became a director of the IM Residency Program. In 2002, Dr. Holman was presented with the Society of Hospital Medicine's Outstanding Service Award in Hospital Medicine (SHM Award) for Outstanding Service in Hospital Medicine.). He serves on two national editorial boards for medical publications and is co-authoring and editing a comprehensive textbook and electronic decision support tool in hospital medicine. He has been a Director of Cogent HMG since June 2011. Among Dr. Holman's foremost professional accomplishments, in 1996 he founded one of the earliest hospitalist programs for Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn. In 2000, he created one of the nation's first postgraduate Fellowship Programs in Hospital Medicine for HPMG&C. In 2007, he co-authored and edited the textbook, Comprehensive Hospital Medicine. Dr. Holman received undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Religious Studies followed by his MD degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and went on to become chief resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota.
