What interview questions does Omnitracs ask?
Very typical. Some technical review, so know what tech is in the job description. Personality is mostly focused on work ethic and a "get things done" mentality.
Typical 2-3 interviews and a presentation.
What's the office vibe like at Omnitracs?
Pretentious, millennial-focused, and formal. Strict dress code enforcement, strict office decor policy, WAY too few quiet places.
Fairly laid back, minimal supervision (in Product anyways), we all leave early on Fridays for happy hour, close knit group, and full of very smart and capable people.
What are you most excited about working at Omnitracs?
Top Employee Response
My coworkers. The work itself is not exciting, and very deadline driven, with poor planning from the C-suite.
Tons of easy to resolve problems. The new app being developed has an amazing start. Teaming up with RedHat is a great move career-wise.
What's the company culture like at Omnitracs?
Not great. C-level leaders turned over in the past year and the mid-level leaders (VP & Directors) aren't on the right page yet. Lots of policy/culture mismatches. Make policies that match the culture you want to claim. Train people, give them the pay/benefits they deserve, and make your budgets reflect your priorities.
There is a big split between the older generation of Omnitracs employees (the original Qualcomm teams) and the new Omnitracs employees (junior and mid level, recent college grads). The company has been largely driven by engineering for as long as it has existed, and there is a clash between them and the new, more design-focused Product team. UX Design is not truly valued at this company, although they are trying. Everything revolves around the bottom line, as Omnitracs is a VC-owned company (Vista Equity). Coworkers are a lot of fun, and they tend to skew young, especially in the Product Management department, where they hire HPEL's (High Performance Entry Level), which is another way of justifying not paying market values for talent. This leads to frequent turnaround, as Product Managers find that they can get paid $15-30k more, on average, at another company after spending a year or two at Omnitracs.
How are layoffs handled in the IT department at Omnitracs?
In secret, without clear/truthful justification, and in large batches. If your managers cant defend your position, it'll be eliminated, so make sure your manager know exactly what value you're bringing to the team.
What perk or benefit should Omnitracs have?
REMOTE WORK. The commute to downtown is terrible/costly (time and $$$) and the cost of parking isn't fully supplemented. Training budgets for individuals. Food/drinks provided in the breakroom. Many other companies do this to great effect.
How often do promotions happen at Omnitracs?
Real promotions are rare/never. title changes and small pay bumps are more frequent, maybe annually or once every 2 years.
What are the most important soft skills I need to be successful at Omnitracs?
how to talk to obstinate /ignorant managers about the problems in their technology/plans/management-styles... In short, upward-facing critical feedback.
What are company outings like at Omnitracs?
poorly attended and very tame. no cutting loose at official events. some teams get together on their own though which can be fun.
What is the daily attire at Omnitracs?
Different on different floors, but generally a fairly strict business casual.
Is it possible to switch teams at Omnitracs? If so, what is the process?
Not that I know. Hiring is quite difficult and some teams are so thinly staffed that they can't lose a headcount to even an internal position.
How innovative is Omnitracs?
Lots of great vision. Leadership at the C-level knows what they want. VP-Director level are having trouble adjusting and delivering what CEO/CTO want. Time will tell.
What is the best advice you could give someone during their first month at Omnitracs?
Get in good with the folks who have been with the company for more than 2 years. The old guard have a ton of power. HR makes it almost impossible to fire anyone, so just show up and you'll be good.
What is the PTO policy at Omnitracs?
Accrual by paycheck. 40 hours of rollover annually. 0 payout on leaving your position, so use it before you go.
What is the onboarding process like at Omnitracs and how long does it last?
HR processes take a day or two. IT department itself offers almost no training, just a crash course and a list of servers/apps. Good luck discovering legacy dependencies and what the baseline should look like.
What's the work from home policy like at Omnitracs?
It's quite generous. Many people work from home 1-2 tmes a week and it's always allowed if you aren't feeling well.
What should I wear for an interview at Omnitracs?
Dress code for most departments is business casual with jeans allowed. Interviews typically done on skype not many face to face ones. But if you have an in person one wear what you would to Easter Sunday church. A suit is probably overkill.
How do you feel about going to work at Omnitracs everyday?
Dread of what new scheme the executives are working on today.
How difficult is it to maintain a social life while in your job at Omnitracs?
If you live downtown, not tough at all. 9-5 work plus a little commute.
How challenged are you at Omnitracs?
It's a company filled with entry-level talent. Challenges are hard to find because everything is so chaotic due to lack of skills and a lack of mentoring to get new skills grown.
What are the team outings like at Omnitracs?
I've never seen one (been here over a year)
What's one thing you wish you'd known before joining Omnitracs?
C-level execs are motivated to make the parent company money, not to make quality products to sell to our customers. It is a struggle to get basic quality controls put in place, much less rigorous QA. Projects go underfunded, and miscommunication creates regular "emergencies" that must be addressed to keep the products up and running.
How's the morale at Omnitracs?
Depends on the team. It ranges from ecstatic to suicidal.
How much diversity is there among employees at Omnitracs?
Fairly diverse
What's the office layout like at Omnitracs?
5 floors in an office building. VERY open with a lot of glass, making the office quite noisy if anyone is talking on the phone or having a conversation at their desk.
