  • Open WKO.

    Click Workouts.

    Select the desired workout.

View or open a dashboard with a chart displaying the data you'd like to edit. We recommend viewing a Horizontal format chart so that all data channels and the entire workout time range will be displayed.

To create a Horizontal chart, click the down arrow in the dashboard title and select Create a New Chart > Horizontal Chart.

Select a workout range in the Right Hand Explorer (RHE) or click and drag on the chart with your mouse to select the data range you would like to be cut.

If you are selecting a range at the very beginning or end of a workout, we recommend double-clicking on the Selection in the RHE to make sure your beginning and/or ending timestamp for the selection is actually 0:00:00 for the start or the actual final timestamp of the workout.

To make sure you have selected the last timestamp for the workout, you can type endtime for the "to" field in the Selection edit window.

Click on the label of the selection on the chart or right-click on the Selection in the RHE.

In the drop-down box that opens, select Cut or "Clear."

Cutting the data will place it on your clipboard, able to be pasted elsewhere.

Clearing the data will simply erase it.

Click the desired channel (or "All Channels") to clear.

  • There are several indications that an athlete may have some bad data, including the following:

Very high wattages in the athlete's Mean Maximal Power Curve or Power Duration (PD) Curve

No phenotype, Pmax, VO2max, TTE, FRC, and/or mFTP displayed in the Hero Bar (only dashes instead)

Power-duration-based charts (such as the Power-Duration Curve, Optimized Intervals, and iLevels) do not work

There are bumps or jagged drops on the athletes mean max power curve

Once you have determined there is bad data, the next step is to pinpoint its location in your workout(s).

    Find the bad data

At the athlete view, open the Find Power Spikes & Bad Cycling Data dashboard, which displays peak power numbers, the athletes MMP (mean max power) curve, and workouts with unusually high IF (intensity factor). If your data is accurate, the average of your top five peak power points should generally be 90-95% of your max peak power numbers. If any average is below 90-95% of the max, you probably have some bad data, also shown by "bumps" or spikes in the MMP Curve.

    Locate each bad data point

Right-click (PC) or CTRL-click (Mac) on any bar above the dashed line on the spike chart, any bump/spike on the MMP curve, or any red bar on the IF chart to show the date of the workout that contains the spike. Click on the date to navigate directly to that workout.

While viewing the workout containing the spike, open the Power Spike ID and Fix Dashboard from the WKO Dashboard Library. All power spikes will be shown as bars on the chart; spikes over 400% of the athletes bike threshold power are shown in red, spikes over 300% of bike threshold power are shown in green, and spikes over 200% of bike threshold power are shown in purple. Focus on the red spikes first.

Click on one red bar in the upper chart pane. The data point will be shown in the Sensor Data report below.

    Correct the bad data

To correct the bad data point, simply double-click directly on the bad data cell in the Sensor Data report and then type in whatever data you want to insert.

Repeat the above steps for any remaining data points and spikes in the workout. It is also helpful to review the Entire Workout range for any additional spikes.

Confirm you have cleared all the bad data

Once power spikes are cleaned, there shouldn't be any more bad data points, your average peak power numbers should fall in the 90-95% of your max numbers (as viewed on the Find Cycling Data Spikes with MMP Curve chart), and your MMP Curve should be fairly smooth. The athletes phenotype, Pmax, VO2max, TTE, FRC, and mFTP should now be displayed on the Hero Bar. If these are still not occurring, repeat the steps above.

  • Views are a powerful new feature in WKO5. A view is a collection of dashboards that can be saved and applied to as many athletes as you wish, enabling you to change a particular dashboard or chart and instantly update it for all athletes using that view. Views can be copied, exported, and imported just like charts and dashboards. A common use for views is to display different dashboards for athletes of different sports; for example, you may want a view for run athletes and a different view for triathlete or cycling athletes.

Views are made up of dashboards. Current WKO4 users will remember that a dashboard is a collection of individual charts; in the same way, a view is a collection of dashboards.

Charts are now stored and saved within the dashboards and views they are contained in. For this reason, you will see more than one copy of a specific chart within the WKO Chart Library if the chart occurs in more than one dashboard.

  • WKO5 automatically identifies indoor cycling workouts as the "Indoor" subsport type of bike workouts. The auto identification is based on the indoor tag or subsport specified in the workout file by the application that created the file. Currently only .fit files contain the indoor subsport or tag, and not all manufacturers include subsport or tag information, though hopefully more will include these in the near future.

If you completed an indoor workout and WKO did not automatically set it to the "Indoor Bike" subsport, it is simple to accomplish manually:

Click the Details tab for the workout.

Click the sport icon on the Details tab (probably a bicycle chain icon).

In the sport menu that pops up, hover over Bike and then click Indoor Bike.

  • TSS is an estimate of the training load created by a workoutbased on intensity and duration. A 1-hour cycling activity at maximum steady-state intensity is 100 TSS (112 for running). TSS can be used to determine how much recovery may be needed after a given workout. TSS is also used to calculate Fitness (CTL) an Fatigue (ATL) in the Performance Manager Chart

  • Fitness (CTL) is an exponentially weighted average of yourlast 42 days of training stress scores (TSS) and reflects the training you have done over the last 6 weeks. However, the workouts you did 15 days ago will impact your Fitnessmore than the workouts you did 30 days ago.

  • The hero bar in WKO5 is the area at the top of the WKO screen that displays the athlete's name, phenotype, Pmax, VO2max, TTE, FRC, mFTP, stamina, sFTP, weight, CTL, ATL, TSB, and ramp rate. Many of the metrics are specific to the sport type selected in the hero bar; to change the sport type shown in the hero bar, simply click the sport icon and choose the sport you'd like to display ( click here for more details ).

Here is how the metrics are related to sport types:

All power-duration modeled data (Pmax, VO2max, TTE, FRC, mFTP, and Stamina) in the hero bar is based on the last 90 days of data from the selected sport type.

The sFTP reported in the hero bar is the most recent FTP for the selected sport type set in Athlete Details (click the athlete's name to view Athlete Details).

The weight reported in the hero bar is the most recent weight recorded in Athlete Details (click the athlete's name to view) and is not affected by sport type.

The remaining hero bar metrics of CTL, ATL, TSB, and ramp will be affected by all workout sport types.

If you're seeing dashes (--) instead of values in the power-duration metrics in the hero bar, there are two common reasons:

You don't have any power data for the selected sport type in the last 90 days.

There are bad data or data spikes within the last 90 days; click here to learn how to fix bad data in WKO5.

  • If you are new to TrainingPeaks, or have not been tracking your Training Stress Score you can estimate your Fitness (CTL) starting value.

The appropriate starting value can be estimated by realizing that most people train at an intensity resulting in 50-75 TSS per hour (i.e., average weekly IF is usually between ~0.70 and ~0.85). Those who train more, mostly or entirely outdoors, and/or in a less structured fashion would likely fall towards the lower end of this range, whereas those who train less, frequently indoors, and/or in a more structured fashion would tend to fall towards the upper end of this range.

The same value should be assigned to both Fitness (CTL) and Fatigue (ATL).

The calculated values for Fitness (CTL), Fatigue (ATL), and Form (TSB) should be interpreted cautiously following such a seeding until sufficient data are available (about 4-6 weeks).Once you have 4-6 weeks of data with completed TSS values for every workout you will need to reset the starting values back to zero for the most accurate data going forward.

If you are using the ATP and you have 4-6 weeks of data recorded then the ATP will automatically use the correct starting CTL for your ATP starting date and you won't need to enter an estimated value.

  • Duration

To date planning by duration has been the most common way to plan your annual training year and has been trusted by coaches and athletes for decades. When planning by duration you will be provided with a weekly training hour goal which you will then use to determine the duration of each of the weeks daily workouts. Since duration only takes one aspect of the workout into account, how long the workout is, it is the least precise method of planning.

    Experience Level: Beginner

    our recommended guidelines

    TSS (Training Stress Score)

By entering a weekly average TSS the ATP will automatically calculate and give you weekly TSS targets and will model future Fitness, Fatigue, and Form in the Performance Management Chart so that you can see what your fitness will likely be on race day. Since TSS represents the workload of a training session and takes both duration and intensity into account, it is a more precise way of planning than duration alone.

    Experience Level: Intermediate

    Fitness (CTL)

If you know the Fitness (CTL) that you would like to achieve on race day (based on past experience or ), you can enter that targetand the ATP will automatically back-calculate the required weekly TSS in order arrive at that goal. Since Fitness (CTL) is calculated from TSS it is a more precise way of planning than duration alone.

In dynamic plans each workout is placed on a specific date on the plan and for all athletes.

    EF (Efficiency Factor)

The ratio of Normalized Power or Normalized Graded Pace to average heart rate for a given workout. A drop in this number over time for similar workouts indicates a higher power or pace for a given level of effort and in increase in fitness.

    Fitness

    See CTL (Chronic Training Load)

    Fatigue

    See ATL (Acute Training Load)

    Form

    See TSB (Training Stress Balance)

    FRC (Functional Reserve Capacity)

An estimate of the amount of workout that can be performed above FTP before fatigue. An FRC of 10 kJ would indicate that a rider could ride 1000 watts for 10 seconds, or 500 watts for 20 seconds. (Available in WKO)

    Freshness

    See TSB

    FTP (Functional Threshold Power)

The power output below which and athlete can sustain for a longer duration (>1 hour) and above which fatigue will occur quickly. Estimated by 60 minute max power or 95% of 20 minute max power.

    HRV (Heart Rate Variability)

A measure of the variability in timing between heart beats. More variability (less steady) at reast is an indicator of central nervous system activations and freshness/readiness to train. Lower variability (more steady) indicates central nervous system depression and may indicate the need for rest. Several 3rd party apps can measure HRV and sync the result to TrainingPeaks as a metric where it can be tracked along with training and other metrics.

Completed Activities Planned Workouts Body Composition

Completed activities (Device to Garmin Connect to TrainingPeaks)

I synced to Garmin Connect but it's not showing in TrainingPeaks!

Usage during peak hours which can result in a short wait before the files sync. Please be patient and your workout should appear shortly.

If you still do not see the activities make sure that they are uploaded to Garmin Connect from your device - if they are not there then the issue is between your device and Garmin Connect and you may need to contact Garmin Support

If your activities are in Garmin Connect then check the connection on Garmin Connect to make sure TrainingPeaks is still listed as a Permission.

How much of my Gamin Connect data will sync to TrainingPeaks?

Currently you have the option to sync only new workouts upload after the Autosync is set up or your entire Garmin Connect history.

DO NOT disconnect accounts and reconnect if you are still waiting for your history to sync- this will disable history from being sent from Garmin Connect. History sync is taking, on average, 7-10 days.

I just synced my accounts, but I am not seeing workouts in TrainingPeaks yet. Why not?

Your Connect workout history will not be sent to your TrainingPeaks account until after you sync a new workout completed after you set up the sync in Garmin Connect. Also, you won't see any workouts dated prior to the day you connected your accounts. It can take 48-72 hours for historic data to show up after syncing a new workout.

Do I want to sync my entire Connect history when setting up the AutoSync?

If you've been uploading to TrainingPeaks daily and into Garmin Connect, don't choose to add your entire history or you'll end up with duplicate workouts! There is no automated way to remove those duplicated workouts, but you can manually remove by deleting from the calendar.

If you want to sync your history, please check the History box when first connecting accounts. DO NOT disconnect accounts and reconnect if you are still waiting for your history to sync- this will disable history from being sent from Garmin Connect. History sync is taking, on average, 7-10 days.

How do I disconnect the AutoSync from my Garmin Connect account to my TrainingPeaks account?

If you need to disconnect your Garmin Connect account from TrainingPeaks, you can do so from the autosync setup page here: http://home.trainingpeaks.com/garminconnect

DO NOT disconnect accounts and reconnect if you are still waiting for your history to sync- this will disable history from being sent from Garmin Connect. History sync is taking, on average, 7-10 days.

How does the AutoSync handle my Multisport file? Will it transfer to TrainingPeaks?

If your multisport file is downloaded into Garmin Connect as one multisport file, it will be separated into each sport type when sent over to TrainingPeaks. For example, a Swim, Bike and Run multisport file will be synced into individual Swim, Bike and Run workouts.

Will manual workouts entered in Garmin Connect sync as well?

No, only workouts with workout device files will be synced. You will want to manually enter those workouts into TrainingPeaks as well.

Planned Structured Workout (TrainingPeaks to Garmin Connect and device)

Only future structured workouts are eligible

Your thresholds must be correctly set for that workout type (power, heart rate, pace) in TrainingPeaks in order for the workout targets to correctly display on your Garmin device.

Workouts must be scheduled today or in the future

Once a workout has been completed, no additional changes will be synced to Garmin Connect.

Eligible workout types are Run, Bike, Cross-train, Mtn Bike, Custom, XC-Ski, Rowing, Other, and Walk. Swim, Strength, Day Off, and Brick workouts are not supported

Any edits made to the workout (moving to a different day, changing the structure or title) immediately sync to Garmin Connect. You will also need to sync your device with Garmin Connect for the changes to update on your device.

Workouts from TrainingPeaks cannot be edited in Garmin Connect - they can only be edited in TrainingPeaks. Changes made in TrainingPeaks will immediately sync to Garmin Connect.

Workouts can be added to the calendar, rescheduled, or edited by an athlete or a coach. If a coach removes a planned workout from an athletes calendar it will be removed from the athletes Garmin Connect Calendar immediately and from the device the next time it syncs with Garmin Connect.

Structured workouts added from training plans or added or edited by your coach sync the same way as workouts added or edited by you

The Fenix 3, Fenix 3 HR, Forerunner 735 XT, and Forerunner 920XT are all compatible utilizing Garmin Connect.

  • TrainingPeaks uses several physiological metrics to quantify the training stress of a particular workout or portion of a workout. Below are each of the training scores, how they are calculated, and the level of accuracy for each metric.

    Training Stress Score (TSS)

Applicable WorkoutTypes:Bike or Rowing with Power Meter only.

Accuracy Level: power based TSS (compared to hrTSS, tTSS, or TSS*) is the most accurate method of calculating a Training Stress Score, and is the default method for Bike workouts when there is enough data present to calculate

Requirements to Calculate:powermeter data file containing time series duration and power data, power threshold (FTP) set in Power Zones section of My Settings

What is TSS?Training Stress Score (TSS) is a composite number that takes into account the duration and intensity of a workout to arrive at a single estimate of the overall training load and physiological stress created by that training session. It is conceptually modeled after the heart rate-based training impulse (TRIMP). By definition, one hour spent at Functional Threshold Power (FTP) is equal to 100 points.

Normalized Power (NP):An estimate of the power that you could have maintained for the same physiological "cost" if your power had been perfectly constant, such as on an ergometer, instead of variable power output. NP is used to calculate TSS.

Intensity Factor (IF) for TSS:For any workout or part of a workout, the ratio of the Normalized Power to the rider's functional threshold power, which gives the user a relative intensity in relation to their threshold power. IF is used to calculate TSS.

    Additional Info:

Normalized Power, Intensity, Factor, and Training Stress Score

    Threshold 411

    Running Training Stress Score (rTSS)

Applicable Workout Types:Run only (TSS can not be calculated for bike workouts from speed)

Accuracy Level:rTSS is the second most accurate method of calculating a Training Stress Score, and is the default method for Run workouts when there is enough data present to calculate

Requirements to Calculate:Workout time series with pace and elevation data, user threshold pace for run/walk (entered in pace/speed zones)

What is rTSS?Running Training Stress Score (rTSS) is similar to Training Stress Score (TSS), but instead of being powermeter based, it is based on pace. Since running pace is a function of power, and for most runners, speed or pace is the measure of greatest interest, we can use the same principles applied in the TSS system to quantify training stress in running. In particular, the elements of the normalized graded pace (NGP, see below), relative to the functional threshold pace. Coupled with the duration of the workout, we can determine an appropriate rTSS score for each workout. rTSS is a metric that can only be used with workouts that are runs, as the algorithm only accounts for the unique physical demands of running. Further details on rTSS can be found here:

Run Training Stress Score (rTSS) Explained

Normalized Graded Pace (NGP):The adjusted pace reported from a global positioning system (GPS), or other speed/distance device, that reflects the changes in grade and intensity that contribute to the physiological cost of running on varied terrain. For more information on NGP, please see:

    What is Normalized Graded Pace?

Intensity Factor (IF) for rTSS:For any workout or part of a workout, the ratio of the Normalized Graded Pace to the runner's functional threshold running pace, which gives the user a relative intensity in relation to their threshold pace. IF is used to calculate rTSS.

    Swim Training Stress Score (sTSS)

    Applicable Workout Types:Swim only

Accuracy Level:sTSS is in Beta, so we are still working through exactly how accurate it is. It will be used as the default method for swim workouts when there is enough data present to calculate.

Requirements to Calculate:Workout moving duration, distance, user threshold speed for swim (entered in speed zones)

What is sTSS?Swim Training Stress Score (sTSS) is based on your functional threshold swim pace, total distance covered, and total moving duration (duration not including rest periods). For more on this metric and how it is calculated, please see: Calculating Swimming TSS(sTSS)

Heart Rate Training Stress Score (hrTSS)

    Applicable Workout Types:All workout types

Accuracy Level:hrTSS is quite accurate with steady-state effort workouts, but is less accurate for workouts with highly fluctuating efforts. hrTSS will only be used if there is not enough data to calculate TSS, rTSS, or sTSS, and the below requirements to calculate are met.

Requirements to Calculate:Workout time series heart rate data, user threshold heart rate (entered in heart rate zones)

What is hrTSS?Heart Rate Training Stress Score (hrTSS) is based on time in heart rate zones (based on userslactate threshold heart rate), and is not as accurate as Powermeter based TSS or running pace baced rTSS. TrainingPeaks uses the table found in the article below for calculating heart rate training stress score:

    Estimating Training Stress Score

    TRIMPS Training Stress Score (tTSS)

    Applicable Workout Types:All workout types

Accuracy Level:tTSS is in Beta, and is considered to be the least accurate method to calculate a training stress score. We have so far discovered that like hrTSS, it is best used with steady-state effort workouts, as it is not very accurate for highly fluctuating effort workouts. tTSS will only be used if there is not enough data to calculate TSS, rTSS, sTSS, or hrTSS, and the below requirements to calculate are met.

Requirements to Calculate:Workout duration and average heart rate

What is tTSS?TRIMPS Training Stress Score (tTSS) is based on average heart rate, total duration of the workout and the person's physiological heart rate properties (resting heart rate, threshold heart rate, and maximum heart rate).

Manually entered or estimated TSS - (TSS*)

An asterisk next to TSS indicates that is was manually entered instead of calculated from the workout data.

  • An asterisk next to a TSS on a workout (TSS*) indicates that the TSS for that workout was manually entered by the athlete or coach and not calculated directly from the workout data. This can be done when the entire workout is manually created, when there is no applicable intensity channel (heart rate or power), or if the workout data is corrupt or missing.

Buyout - If the Coach desires to train the Athlete outside of the Coach Match Service or prefers to utilize other terms or methods of payment for coaching services, the Coach must pay TrainingPeaks a $300 one time buyout fee.

When the Coach and Athlete are matched through the Coach Match Service, the coach must:

Notify the Program Manager that the coach has contacted the athlete within 24 hours of the match

Provide the services outlined in the applicable Coaching Package for which the athlete has signed up

If, for whatever reason, the coach can no longer accept athlete leads, they must notify the Program Manager as soon as possible.

TrainingPeaks reserves the right, at any time, for any reason, and without prior notice, to (i) declare the coach ineligible to participate in the Coach Match Service, and/or (ii) withdraw the coachs TrainingPeaks Level 2 Accreditation.

Aerobic Decoupling compares the Efficiency factor from the first half of an activity to the second half. A smaller change in EF (less than 5%) from the first half to the second half may indicate improving aerobic endurance.

  • WKO users may occasionally want to work with workout data in Excel or Google Sheets, and this is simple to do. Here's how:

Click on the desired workout in WKO.

Create a report with the desired data channels and/or expressions you want to export.

Click here for instructions on creating a chart or report

Click the desired portion of the workout (such as Entire Workout, a certain lap, a selection dragged on a chart, a peak power range, etc.).

Click the down arrow in the chart title bar and click Copy to Clipboard.

Open Excel or Google Sheets and paste the copied report into a new spreadsheet.

You can now run standard Excel calculations with the copied data.

Step 1: Create a report with the desired data

Step 2: Copy the report to the clipboard

Step 3: Paste the copied data into Excel or Google Sheets

You can use this process to verify the calculations within WKO. For example, if you want to check the average power of a workout or portion of a workout, create a report with one data series -- power -- and paste it into Excel, then run an Excel average of all the pasted values.

  • No, but you can connect your athlete account to your coach account so you can view it through your coach account.

Athlete and coach accounts in TrainingPeaks are two different things. Athlete accounts, therefore, cannot be turned into a coach account. If you already have an athlete account and want a Coach account as well you will need to create a new account with a unique username here

We can then connect your own Athlete account to your own Coach account. This way you can plan, track and analyze your own Athlete data just like you would one of your other athletes. This also simplifies things as you do not need to log in and out of two accounts.

Once you have created your Coach account, send the usernames of your 2 accounts here and we will get them connected.

In some cases we can prorate a refund on your Premium Athlete account once you have activated the Coach account by paying the license fee. Please open a ticket and we can inform you if you qualify.

  • Once you have determined yourthreshold value you can enter that in your TrainingPeaks account settings to get the most accurate workout data.

    Log into your account

Click your name in the upper right

    Click account settings

    Click or scroll to "Zones"

In each threshold type section (Heart Rate, Power, Speed/Pace) you have the options of a Default value and a specific value for each sport type. If you have a different threshold for each sport type (heart rate for running vs. cycling, for example) you will want to set threshold and zones for each one. The "Default" values will be used for any sport type that doesn't have a specific setting.

Enter your threshold heart rate, power, or pace, and then select your auto-calculation method

    Click Save

Read more about setting thresholds and why they are important here.

  • If you've noticed that some of your workouts in TrainingPeaks have not been downloaded to WKO4, the first thing to try is a full sync of all your workouts.

When you first connect a WKO4 athlete to a TrainingPeaks athlete and sync the two, WKO4 performs a full sync, which means it synchronizes all past and future workouts that exist in TrainingPeaks. Once this full sync is complete, subsequent syncs are performed as quick syncs, which look only 30 days into the past and 90 days into the future; any changes made in that time period will sync during a quick sync.

If you'd like WKO4 to do another full sync for a particular athlete, here's how:

    Open WKO4.

Click on the desired athlete (or your own name if you are the only user) and select the Athlete Details tab.

Click the "Edit" button by the TrainingPeaks Athlete field.

From the dropdown Athlete list, select "Do not sync."

Click the dropdown Athlete list again and re-select the TrainingPeaks athlete.

Close that window and then click the gear icon in the upper right corner of the WKO4 window and select "sync with TrainingPeaks.com."

  • Peak Performances on the TrainingPeaks mobile apps show your peak performances for power, heart rate, and pace by distance for the current year and for your entire workout history in TrainingPeaks.

On the daily workout feed, a blue medal icon will indicate the number of peak performances achieved for that workout.

When you tap on a workout to open it from the feed the specific peak performances achieve in that workout will be displayed at the top of the workout summary tab. Round medals indicate peaks for the current year, star medals indicate All-Time peaks. A performance will only display in the workout summary if it was at least a top 3 performance for the current year.

You can also get an overview of your Peak Performances by tapping on the main Peaks tab. There you will see a list of your top 20 peaks for the given sport type and selected time range. (Note - running power isn't supported at this time.) You can tap a Peak from the list to highlight it on the graph above, or you can tap on the Peak icon in the graph to select it from the list. The graph can also be pinched or zoomed to see more detail of a specific data range.

Peak Performances is a Premium TrainingPeaks feature. You can upgrade your account here or by tapping the "Upgrade" button in your account. Have a question about Peak Performances that isn't answered here? See our Peak Performances FAQ article. Peak Performances is also available on TrainingPeaks online.
