Personal Capital FAQs

Personal Capital's Frequently Asked Questions page is a central hub where its customers can always go to with their most common questions. These are the 251 most popular questions Personal Capital receives.

Frequently Asked Questions About Personal Capital

  • Personal Capital allows you to track Bank, Credit, Loan, Mortgage and Investment accounts. You can easily add an account by clicking the 'Link' (+) icon on the sidebar.

Before you begin: We can only track accounts that you already have online access to. This means you need to have a username and password for your financial institution before we can track it for you. Once you have your online access credentials you can proceed to add your financial institutions.

Step 1: Search for your financial institution by name, or you can enter the web address of their site; for example citibank.com

Step 2: Select the right account type. Many financial institutions have different products and product names. If you get a large number of account types returned try selecting to view just one type of account; Cash, Credit Cards, Loans, Investments

Step 3: Once you have selected the account type you now need to enter the credentials you use to log into that site so we can track it. When you enter your credentials and click 'Continue' we will attempt to contact your financial institution.

We go out and verify your credentials with your financial institution, in some instances your institution may need additional information for us to complete connecting to it. If so you will be prompted to provide additional information. If no additional information is required then we will skip Step 4 and return you to the search screen to add an additional account. We will also automatically look for any accounts you have with that institution. For example if you have a B of A Checking, Savings, Credit and Loan we will attempt to add all of those accounts so you don't need to search and add them.

Step 4: If additional information is required when we have completed adding your institution you can see what accounts were added on this step and select additional account types that you would like us to connect for you.

  • Update: Our aggregation team has found that Optum Bank has currently enabled Google Captcha which is not currently supported by our aggregation software. We are working with Optum to create an authentication method that is specific to aggregators, but developing this will take time. Our latest word from Optum is that this feature will be available in the first quarter of 2020.

Unfortunately this means that there will likely be ongoing issues with Optum Bank accounts until this is developed. In the meantime, we recommend marking your existing Optum Bank account as closed, then add it as a manual account. This way you will be able to manually update your balance while the resolution for this issue is in the works.

  • The Detailed Cash Flow is available to help you understand the results of the Retirement Planner. There are various variables included in each column that may not be listed.

During ages that are part of your accumulation phase it will look like the following.

The Portfolio Values are the estimated value at the beginning of that year in the average and poor markets.

The Basic Saving or Retirement Spending column shows how much money is expected to be saved (during accumulation), or spent (during retirement). The values shown are post tax or the amount you actually expect to save or spend.

The Spending Goals show other expenses that you expect to experience, the values shown are post-tax.

Other Income events shows the income from other sources for each year. The value shown is the sum of all active income events for that year after they have been adjusted for taxes that may apply. Note that 85% of social security income is taxed in our calculations and the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) is applied at age 70 1/2.

Cash Flow represents the total cash flow that is expected to move into or out of investment accounts. It is calculated as (Basic Saving or Retirement Spending) + (Other Spending Goals ) + (OtherIncome Events)

When Cash Flow is negative, taxes will be applied to the cash taken from investment accounts. The calculation for this row would result in -$17,791 that needs to be taken from investment accounts to cover the expenses in the other columns. Taxes will be applied to the withdrawals so the tax rate is applied to create the Cash Flow necessary to cover expenses plus taxes.

  • There have been reports that users with Capital One accounts are being asked for secondary authorization (MFA) multiple times. Capital One recently made some security changes, and your linked account will no longer update in your Personal Capital dashboard without secondary authentication. Were sorry for the inconvenience and are working with our aggregation partner, Yodlee, to resolve this issue.

To have proper account linking, Capital One will need to make changes on their end that are, unfortunately, beyond our control. We always value feedback from our users because it helps us work to create the best experience possible, and were sure Capital One would appreciate hearing your perspective as well

Please be assured that the secondary authentication is working as expected and your account should refresh once that step is completed. Note that you may have to complete this step several times over the next few days.

  • There are many elements to the fees you pay; some are more clearly disclosed than others. The key components to the costs associated with investment accounts are:

The fees for the funds in which your account is invested. Fee information is indicated in the expense ratio column and is based on the fees disclosed by the fund providers.

Plan administrative and advice fees for retirement accounts. These are the fees that are passed on to you from the plan administrators and cover record keeping and advice. They can range from 0% in large company plans to over 1% in plans for smaller companies. We provide a slider that is pre-set which you can change to match your plan administrative and advice fees. For 401k plans, it should be available in the recently required disclosure statement or from your company's benefits administrator.

Unpublished fund fee data. Specialty funds may charge fees that can range from 0.5% to over 3% and are not plainly disclosed. For 401k plans, this data should be available in the recently required disclosures statement and on your plan administrators website. We allow you to set the fund fees for the group of funds for which there is no publicly available data.

We use your date of birth to determine your current age and selected investment account balances as a starting point for estimating the impact of fees on your retirement goals. We factor in the typical retirement age, expected annual future contributions (employee and employer), your selected risk tolerance, andreturn on investment based on historical trends and fund administrative and advice fees, some of which are based on specific funds you currently own in your retirement account(s). From this data we calculate your estimated annual contributions, earnings and the effect of fees on your total return over time and present this information graphically so you can easily see what you would have in retirement before and after fees. The information provided is for informational purposes only and is based on certain assumptions and historical data. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future returns. No guarantee is made with respect to performance. You may wish to seek the advice of a professional in planning your retirement.

  • If you have duplicate accounts added to your dashboard, it is likely because:

The accounts are accessible with 2 different logins (such as a joint account)

The name or number of the account has changed

If the accounts are shared or are accessible with 2 different sets of credentials and you have linked both sets in Personal Capital, you can remove one instance of the account without impacting the other. We recommend that you review the 'Linked On' date for the account and retain the one the older one.

If the account name or number changed recently, Personal Capital will automatically create a new account to accommodate for this change. In this case, we recommend that you close the older account so the historical data can be retained in Personal Capital. New data will be aggregated in the newer account going forward.

  • When you first add an account Personal Capital will retrieve 1-3 months worth of transactions, this varies by financial institution. Within each account type the type of information we will be able to display will differ as well. For example

Bank accounts: Not all financial institutions provide pending transactions (these are transactions that the bank is aware of but hasn't finalized yet, frequently they are debit card authorization). We will attempt to pull in 1 year of data, but how much data we can fetch is determined by the financial institution.

Credit Cards: We can provide your current interest rate for some credit cards but not all credit cards provide that information to us.

Loans & Mortgages:Not all financial institutions provide the breakdown between principal and interest, interest rates, and in some cases transactions aren't provided just the current balance.

Investments: We receive transaction dates, descriptions, action (buy, sell, reinvest, dividend, etc) shares and amount.

If you are missing current data or have incorrect data from your accounts please let us know and we will work to add it.

Note: Personal Capital currently does not allow for importing historical data from excel or other documents.
