I have enjoyed working there, but the company has problems in communicating with employees on a corporate and store level. I think the buyers must just phone in their jobs, and are not in stores to talk to employees to see what moves and what is wanted.
What is most positive about the culture and environment at your company?
Staff that is mature and really would like to see the company pull out of its financial struggle.
What are some of the best things about your team?
Our current manager gives little direction or feedback. It's like we have to try to read her mind in trying to set displays. She is constantly moving things around in the store making it confusing for employees and customers.
What's going wrong and how can it be improved?
Too much inventory. Stores are crowded, and we don't get rid of clearance merchandise fast enough so we have piles of it with nowhere to go. P1 doesn't seem to know who their customer is. Don't overload smaller stores with so much junk. We are beginning to look like a Dollar store.
What does the leadership team need to get better at?
There is no cohesive look to the store, especially in furniture offerings. It's just random statements of lots of chairs or tables, but nothing that really conveys a look or style for decorating a room. The store is full of stuff that you can find at the Dollar Tree, but at four times the price.
Why do you feel undervalued and what would make you feel better about your compensation?
I have been there now almost 5 years as a part-time employee, and almost everyone is part-time. I have never had a review and neither have my fellow employees. They pay less than most retail jobs do now. I stay because I like the people I work with, but P1 offers us little reward for our work.
