Frequently Asked Questions About Strava

  • Tips for correcting an activity's incorrect date or start time:

You may be experiencing an issue related to a GPS rollover that occurred on April 6, 2019. Learn more here.

Check your profile settings and make sure your location is set properly. This can affect what timezone is registered on your Strava account. Activities recorded indoors with no GPS data will default to the timezone of the location listed on your profile. Sometimes Strava gets stuck when updating your timezone based on the location listed on your profile. If your location is set correctly, but the timezone isn't, give the following a try:

Select your current location and type in Los Angeles, then Save. Select Refresh Page.

Enter your correct location and Save. Select Refresh Page.

Check the Strava website to view the activity's total elapsed time. If the total elapsed time is a very large number, then the GPS device has recorded data on different days. If two activities are recorded together as one, use the split activity tool. Or, if only a few points at the beginning or end of your file have the wrong date, consider trimming this data with the activity crop tool.

Garmin devices are known to malfunction by recording some part of the activity in the future. You can find more information on how to correct the error here.

To manually correct the activity's date, export the GPX file from Strava, open it in a text editor, and find and replace all the incorrect dates with the correct dates.

If you're recording with the Strava mobile app, check that you have the clock set to update automatically.

  • Recording Swim Activities

    Indoor Swims

    Outdoor Swims

    FAQs

    Recording your Swim Activities

There are many multi-sport or swim devices that are compatible with Strava. While all these devices are compatible with Strava, some have an easier process for uploading to Strava than others. For a complete list of all our compatible devices please refer to this article. Here are some of the most popular devices used by our athletes to record swim activities:

    Garmin Forerunner 920XT, 910XT and 310XT

Garmin Fenix 2 and Fenix 3

    TomTom Multi-Sport

    Polar V800

    Suunto Ambit3

    Indoor Swims

Indoor swims on Strava will not display a map, instead, a laps view will be displayed.

Most devices have an option to input pool length before you start an activity and you will have to hit the lap button to record your distance and time.

Please note: You will have to input the pool length before starting your activity. There is no way to update the pool length once the activity is on Strava.

Distance is calculated by adding up the laps distance and moving time is calculated by adding up the timer time of any lap more than zero yards.

    Outdoor Swims

Outdoor swims arerecorded with GPS data so a map will be displayed on Strava.

A GPS-based moving time is used instead of lap time.

The pace chart for outdoor swims is built with GPS points although we apply a bit of smoothing.

Please note: If you are recording a swim activity in an outdoor lap pool, it is best to turn off GPS and use laps. In order to get the most accurate data, you should treat outdoor lap pools as indoor swims.

    FAQs

Why is heart rate information missing from my swim?

We do not yet show heart rate data on swim activities.

  • Autopause for cycling uses your GPS to detect movement and automatically pause the recording when you are stopped. Autopause for running uses your phone's accelerometer to automatically pause the recording when you are stopped (Enable split announcements to hear audio announcements for pause and resume events). Once movement is again detected, autopause will turn off and the recording will resume.

If your autopause is not automatically pausing:

Check the Strava app's record settings to make sure the autopause feature is enabled. Since autopause relies on the accuracy of your GPS to determine if you are stopped or moving, check our GPS troubleshooting resources for Android and iPhone. If there is an issue with the accuracy of your phone's GPS then the autopause feature won't be able to detect if you are stopped and won't automatically pause. Also, note that your recording will be resumed if you are walking around or move indoors where the GPS signal is obscured. You can use the manual pause feature to prevent any miscalculations.

Example of GPS issues when indoors with an obscured signalpreventingautopause from pausing the recording:

If your autopause is not automatically resuming:

If recording a walk or hike we recommend disabling autopause. The slower speeds often cause the app topause frequently and have trouble resuming which will result in recording issues. With autopause disabled,Strava will calculatemoving and stopped time during the upload process instead of during the activity.

Autopause may not resume automatically if you remain stopped for a long time. Some phones will shut off the GPS signal to conserve battery if it is not being used for some time. Opening the Strava app to view the record screen will reactive GPS tracking and ensure the recording is resumed when you begin moving.

  • Many of us at Strava have enjoyed using Relive over the last few years, but because of Relives recent updates, unfortunately we have decided to end this integration. The current version of Relive violates several of the terms that we ask of API partners. These terms are in place to safeguard your personal information, to ensure a level playing field for all our partners, and to protect what makes Strava unique. Weve worked hard with Relive to try to fix this, but they have ultimately chosen not to make the changes needed to honor their agreement. So as of today, Strava will no longer send your activities to Relive for playback.

Rest assured, nothings changed about how your information is stored or the control you have over how its accessed by API partners. And we remain deeply committed to helping our many API partners build experiences that make your workouts and races even better.

As always, thanks for being a part of the Strava community,The Strava Team

  • Our Power Equation

The power produced while riding is made up of several components:

Power produced to overcome the rolling resistance of forward motion.

Power produced to overcome wind resistance.

Power produced to overcome the pull of gravity (in the case of climbing hills).

Power produced to accelerate from one speed to another.

The total power produced, P(total), is the sum of all four power components.

    P(total) = P(rolling resistance) + P(wind) + P(gravity) + P(acceleration)

    P(rolling resistance)

The power required to overcome rolling resistance can be described by the formulaP = Crrx N x v, where

    P is the power required.

Crris the rolling resistance coefficient. We define this based on the type of bike (road, mtb, cross) you used.

N is the normal force of the bike and the athlete against gravity.

    v is the rider velocity.

For more information about rolling resistance, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_resistance.

    P(wind)

The power required to overcome wind resistance (drag) can be described by the formulaP = 0.5 x x v3x Cdx A, where

    P is the power required.

    is the density of air.

v is the rider velocity, relative to the wind.

    Cdis the drag coefficient.

A is the the surface area of the rider facing the wind.

Because we do not know wind speed or air density during your ride, we assume no environmental wind conditions and an outside temperature of 15C. The drag coefficient is determined by the type of bike you are riding (TT bikes have less drag than mountain bikes). We use a constant for surface area. For more information about wind drag, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_(physics)

    P(gravity)

The power required to overcome the pull of gravity while riding up an incline can be described by the formulaP = m x g x sin(arctan(grade)) x v, where

    P is the power required.

m is the mass of the rider and the bicycle.

g is the gravitational constant, 9.8.

grade is the slope of the hill.

    P(acceleration)

The power required to accelerate from one speed to another within a ride sampling window can be described by the formulaP = m x a x v, where

    P is the power required.

m is the mass of the rider and the bicycle.

a is the acceleration between your starting speed and your ending speed within the sampling window.

Strava Calculated Power vs. Power Meter

We have seen that in most cases our watts numbers are very close to the numbers provided by a Powertap or SRM. Note thatStrava calculated watts are not the watts produced at the crank but the watts produced by the rider-bike system, this will create a slight difference between the powermeter data and the Strava watts. Lack of good chain lubrication and low tire pressure can rob you of the watts you see on your Powertap or SRM.Other reasons watts can be inconsistent include strong winds and bad elevation data reported by the Garmin. Our calculations are most accurate when climbing given accurate rider and bike weight.

    Stats in the Mobile Feed

    Activity Ordering

Every Strava athlete gets a personalized feed. We order the items in your feed to ensure that you don't miss the items that matter most to you. When you refresh yourfeed, any content you haven't seen before will be added to the topof thefeed, presented in an order based on the items that should be most interesting to you. Anything you've already seen will remain in the order in which you saw it. We don't hide any activities from you - they're all in yourfeed.Your experience may be different if you check your feed every day or once a week. For example, if you are someone who checks their Strava feed multiple times a day, your feed will be closer to chronological as we only reorder the items that are new since the last time you viewed your feed. If you are someone that only checks the feed once every few days, you'll have more stories to catch up on so your feed will be ordered accordingly.

We've been collecting feedback from the athletes about the non-chronological feed through surveys and interviews. Learn more about our research and how we used our findings to inform our decisions when building the feed here and here. Feel free to Send us your feedback

Can I revert back to the chronologicalfeed? There is no way to revert to a chronological feed.

Will this change affect my club or personal feed? No, your personal feed and your clubs' feeds will still be chronological

    Stats in the Mobile Feed

The activity data you see in your mobile feed may be slightly different from activity to activity.Currently, there's no way to customize which stats are displayed in the feed. For example:

For a running activity, the elevation will appear in place of pace/speed if the elevation gain is greater than 100ft per mile. Otherwise, pace/speed will be visible on the dashboard.

The information you see may also be dependent on the length of the text. If you are not seeing elevation or pace but an empty space this may be because the time and distance take up more room on the screen and therefore the next set of data (elevation or pace) is not displayed since there is limited room.

  • Each Strava Segment has a leaderboard that ranks all Strava athletes who match the GPS trace between the defined start and finish. Leaderboards are specific to a single activity type, meaning that a run segment only shows runs on the leaderboard and a cycling segment only shows rides on the leaderboard. If activities are uploaded to Strava under an incorrect activity type, or with data that is motor-assisted by either an electric bike or while driving a car, the fairness and accuracy of our leaderboards suffer. Each Strava athlete is responsible for the content they upload and we expect all athletes to contribute positively to the Strava community by following our guidelines. As stated in our Termsof Use, repeated actions that don't follow these guidelines can result in some action taken by Strava on the offending account.

In an effort to keep our segment leaderboards as fair as possible, we ask you to follow these guidelines:

Keep motorized and non-traditional bicycle data off the leaderboards

Use the E-bike Ride and Virtual Ride activity types

Hide motor-paced rides (cycling behind a vehicle) from leaderboards

Manipulated GPS data is not allowed on any leaderboards

Keep rides with a mixed gender tandem bike off leaderboards

Adjust privacy controls on duplicate versions of an activity to "Only You"

    Responsibly participate in segment leaderboards

Report activities that should not be on leaderboards

Guidelines for motorized and non-traditional bicycles:

The Ride activity type is for conventional human-powered bicycles (including recumbents) riding outdoors. Do not use this activity type if your activity includes data recorded while driving a car, motorcycle, pacing a vehicle, using an electric bike or other electric-assisted vehicle, using a non-traditional bicycle with full-farings or aerodynamic modifications including velomobiles, or using a GPS simulator program for virtual riding.

Use the E-bike Ride and Virtual Ride activity types:

To preserve the fairness and accuracy of the leaderboards for the Ride activity type, use the available E-bike Ride and Virtual Ride activity types or adjust your activity's privacy controls to "Only You" or "Followers" (these controls will remove the activity from public leaderboards).

    Guidelines for motor-paced rides:

Motor-pacing, or drafting behind a motorized vehicle, is considered motor-assistance and conflicts with the fairness and integrity of segment leaderboards. When uploading data from a motor-paced ride, please use the"Only You" or "Followers"privacy control on the activity edit screen.

Guidelines for mixed gender tandem bike activities:

Our leaderboards are gender-specific and because of this, we ask our athletes to help keep men's efforts on men's leaderboards and women's efforts on women's leaderboards. If your tandem activity contains both men's and women's efforts, please choose from the following options:

Use your activity's privacy controls to adjust the setting to"Only You"or "Followers" in order to remove the activity's segment times from public leaderboards.

From the edit options, change the activity typeto "Workout" (not to be confused with the workout tag for rides and runs).

    Guidelines on uploading duplicate activities:

If you upload duplicate activities, set the privacy controls of one of them to "Only You". We do not allow two public versions of the same activity on Strava. If you continually upload duplicates and do not adjust their visibility to "Only You", your account will be at risk for deletion.

    Manipulated GPS Data

If you use a third party website to manipulate your GPS data, especially if it's to enhance your segment times, you may not upload this data to Strava. This includes uploading route files to your Strava account. Failure to comply with this guideline may result in account deletion.

How to report activities that should not be on leaderboards:

By providing the Flag feature, Strava allows the community to moderate the accuracy of a Segment Leaderboard. The Flag tool is available to users to identify bad GPS data or data from non-human-powered and non-conventional bicycles. If you notice another athlete's activities should not be on leaderboards, please use the Activity Flag tool to remove the activity. For example, if a user accidentally leaves a GPS device on while driving home in a car and forgets to crop their data after upload, that data can be removed from the Leaderboard rankings when the Flag is created. The Flag feature is not designed to be overused or abused. Go here for instructions on how to use this feature.

  • Even if you and your friend do an activity together, it is possibleto get different distance calculations on Strava. In most cases, this will be because one or both of your GPS devices recorded location (or other) data that does not accurately represent your activity. Things like GPS drift, GPS signal loss or a 'jumpy' GPS track can cause your activity to report more or less distance than you actually traveled. Below is an example of both GPS drift (the recorded path is just slightly 'off' from the road) and a 'jumpy' GPS track. The distance for this activity was inflated becauseeach 'zig' and 'zag' of the GPS track had to be accounted for with a straight line connecting them. Strava does some smoothing to compensate for bad data but some cases are so extreme thatwe aren't able to provide a realistic estimate of your distance. how distance is calculated

Why is my distance on Strava different from my GPS device?

Many devices will write their own distance stream into the activity file that may include information from sensors like wheel sensors. Strava will do some smoothing to the uploaded data to remove outlier GPS points but, in general, if we use your device's distance stream, you should see a similar distance on Strava as you did on your GPS device. If a device does not write a distance stream into the file whatsoever, we would use the GPS data to calculate the distance by adding up the distance from GPS point to GPS point. Again, we would do some smoothing to remove outlier GPS points - this includes inaccurate GPS points and data that is clearly inconsistent with the file. There is a threshold of outlier/bad GPS data that will cause Strava's file parser to recalculateyour activity's distance by blending the GPS and device distance together in order to correct those areas with bad GPS/device data. This bad data detection is an effort to improve the quality of uploaded data on Strava and does solve many issues with GPS inconsistencies. This reprocessed distance can differ from the distance data originally reported by the GPS device, especially if a speed sensor is present. Here is some more information on

  • Wondering what those training terms used on Strava really mean? See our glossary below to learn how to make the most out of your training on Strava.

    FTP

Your Functional Threshold Power (FTP) is the maximum average power that you can hold for one continuous hour. For example, if you were to ride a 40k time trial in 60 minutes at an average power of 275W, your FTP would be 275W.

FTP is the keystone to training with power. It allows Strava to determine how hard a ride is for you. You doing 300W might feel much different than someone less trained doing 300W and FTP allows us to gauge just how hard segments, rides, and even weeks or months of training were for you!

    Calculating YourFTP

We recommend you test for your FTP at least every few weeks to a month while you're training. Here are some tips to get the most out of your FTP testing:

It's extremely taxing on your body (and your training program) to continuously push out 60-minute max efforts. It's also difficult to find a stretch of road where you can ride for 60 minutes uninterrupted and maintain a steady wattage. Thus, the easiest way to calculate your FTP is to test your best average power for 20 minutes. We believe 20 minutes is enough time to stress the same physiological systems as a 60-minute effort would and it is easier to consistently do within your season.

Try to reproduce the same conditions each test this means use the same stretch of road or always use the same trainer/rollers

Make sure you are fresh (the previous few days should be light in terms of training load)

    Properly warm up

    Weighted Average Power

When you ride with a power meter, you'll notice how your power jumps all over the place based on the terrain, grade, wind, and other factors. Weighted Average Power looks at all of this variation and provides an average power for your ride that is a better indicator of your effort than simply taking your average power. It is our best guess at your average power if you rode at the exact same wattage the entire ride.

    Total Work

Total Work, expressed in kilojoules (kJ), is simply the sum of the watts generated during your ride. There is a close 1to1 ratio with Total Work and Calories expended during a ride.

    Intensity

Intensity is our way of showing how difficult a ride was as compared to yourFTP. We look at your Weighted Average Power for the ride and compare it to your FTP. If your Weighted Average Power was 250Wand your FTP 300W, the Intensity would 83%. It's very possible to have an Intensity of over 100% if the ride was shorter than an hour.

Endurance / Recovery Ride 65% and lower

    Moderate Ride 65-80%

    Tempo Ride 80-95%

    Time Trial or Race 95-105%

Short Time Trial or Race 105% and higher

    Segment Intensity

Intensity on Segments gives you a simple visual indication of how hard you went on a given segment by comparing the effort with your best power for the duration of that segment over the last 6 weeks.

For example, if you maintained 300Wfor a 10-minute segment and your best 10-minute power over the past 6 weeks was 330W, your segment intensity will be 90%.

    Training Load

We calculate Training Load by comparing your power during your ride to yourFTPand determining how much load you put on your body during the workout. Training Load is a great way to determine how much rest you need after your workouts. The guide below will tell you how long after a workout it will take you to fully recover:

About 24 hours 125 and lower

    36-48 hours 125-250

    At least 3 days 250-400

    At least 5 days 400+

    Power Curve

The Power Curve shows your best average power for time periods of 1 second up to the length of your ride. We search your entire ride and find these best efforts and you can compare them with your best efforts for your last 6 weeks, the current year, years in the past, or all-time!

The Power Curve can be displayed in Watts (W) or Watts per Kilogram (W/kg.)

    Power Zones

While the Power Curve shows your best efforts for given periods of time, Power Zone charts take each 1 second of power of your ride and put it into a bucket. The buckets are based on yourFTPand are as follows:

Active Recovery (<54% FTP) Social pace with very little physiological effect on your body. Can be used in between intervals and for recovery rides.

Endurance (55% - 74% FTP) Easy pace that you could ride all day long. Conversation is still possible with little concentration required.

Tempo (75% - 89% FTP) Brisk pace that can be maintained for a few hours that requires concentration when riding alone. Breathing in tempo is rhythmic and may become strained at the upper end of this zone.

Threshold (90% - 104% FTP) Moderate to hard effort and leg sensations that can be maintained for up to 1 hour. Conversation is difficult and concentration is required.

VO2Max (105% - 120% FTP) Power that is primarily taxing your VO2Max system. Leg sensations are high and conversation is not possible. VO2Max can be maintained for 3-8 minutes.

Anaerobic (120% - 149% FTP) Extremely hard efforts with severe leg sensations that can be maintained for 30 seconds up to 3 minutes.

Neuromuscular (>150% FTP) Sprinting power that is taxing your neuromuscular system and can be maintained for 1-20 seconds.

    Fitness

While fitness is a complicated concept, it can be simplified to just an accumulation of training. The Fitness Score is calculated using Training Load, to measure your daily training, and an impulse-response model to quantify its effect over time. This will intuitively capture the building up of fitness, as well as the loss of fitness during a break.

    Fatigue

Conceptually, fatigue is easy to understand; it's that tired feeling which limits your performance. We model it the same way as fitness, but on a shorter time scale. You'll notice the score go up quickly after a couple hard days, but also go down quickly as you take a few days off.

    Form

Being in form, or "peaking," happens when one is very fit but not fatigued. Here we model this as the difference between your Fitness Score and your Fatigue Score.

  • 1. Once the magnets and sensor are mounted on the bike, turn on the Garmin and follow the menu sequence Settings > Bike Settings > [Bike 1] > ANT+ Spd/Cad. and press Rescan.

    2. Update your Bike data in the Garmin to document the wheel diameter for the most accurate speed and distance readings: MENU > Settings > Bike Settings > [Bike 1] > Bike Details. In the "Wheel Size" field, select an option:

Selecting "Auto" will use GPS data to calculate your wheel size. Auto wheel size may vary in accuracy depending on the accuracy of the GPS and whether the magnet counts every wheel revolution during the test period.

Selecting "Custom" to enter your wheel size. You can either take out a tape measure and mark the distance of one wheel revolution on the ground, or you can reference the table of standard wheel sized and circumferences. Measurement is Length inmillimeters(mm).

    3. If you attach your Garmin to another bike, it is important to document a new bike in your Garmin's settings and to switch to that bike, especially if the wheel circumference is different (mountain bike versus road bike for example).

  • How to record and upload a stationary, indoor or treadmill activity

At this point, the Strava mobile app can't record indoor or stationary activities.

You can record indoor runs with the Strava Apple Watch App.

Indoor activities can be recorded with any Strava-compatible GPS device or non-GPS device as long as the data is compatible with the Strava uploader (or can be synced from another app to Strava).

If you record indoors especially with sensors for speed, cadence or power, you should disable the GPS on your device while recording a stationary activity. This will help with correct analysis of your data such as distance and speed.

Marking an activity as a Stationary Trainer or Treadmill on the Strava website

Since the Strava mobile app cannot record stationary or indoor data without a GPS signal, these activity options are only available on the website. Overview of the indoor activity page

The Stationary activity page looks like any other activity detail page but without the map. Instead, the performance graph is highlighted to give you a view of your heart rate, speed, cadence or power data if available.

If you have this accessory data, you will also be able to view Summit features such as heart rate zone breakdown and power analysis. If you don't have any accessory data, then there may not be a performance graph but you will still get credit for your elapsed time.

If you didn't record your indoor session with a device, you can still enter the data manually on Strava

You'll get the credit for the training and all you have to do is enter the basic fields like duration, time of day, date, and distance. To create a manual activity go to "Upload Activity" on your account and choose "Upload an activity manually".

  • New Release in April 2018

    How does it work?

Relative Effort, found on the activity detailspage, measures how much cardiovascular work went into any activity that has heart rate data. A short and hard activitycan require just as much effort as a long and leisurely one, and Relative Effort makes it so you can compare the two. Not only that, but different activity types are weighted so that your efforts can be compared across sports, and your values are personalized to your own heart rate zones so you can even compare with other athletes.

If you and a friend both ran your hardest 10K effort, your Relative Efforts would be similareven if your finishing times are different. Similarly, if you rode a bike as hard as you could for the same amount of time, your Relative Effort would be comparable.

    Weekly Effort

Weekly Effort view shows your total Relative Effort for the week so far. It also indicates how you're trending week over week and provides a weekly Relative Effort range, shown by the white band in the middle of the graph. This area represents an estimation for activity that allows you to maintain or build fitness while minimizing risk of overtraining.

Within range:A productive amount of activity to maintain or improve your fitness. Weeks in this range are not likely to require additional recovery time.

    Strava Blog

Below range:Lighter than your average amount of activity. Aim for levels below your weekly range when taking a recovery week.

Above range:Higher than your average amount of activity. This may signal that you are increasing your efforts too quickly and potentially increasing your risk of injury or overtraining.

    FAQ

What Summit pack do I need to get this feature?

Relative Effort is part of the Analysis pack.

How can I make sure my weekly range is accurate?

Your weekly range becomes more accurate the more your uploads represent your normal activity level. Keep on recording!

Why can't I see Relative Effort for my activity?

Relative Effort is only available for Summit members on activities that contain heart rate data. If your activity does have heart rate, and you don't see it on Strava, check that you've allowed Strava to access health-related data.

Why can't I see Relative Effort on my swims that contain heart rate?

We can only process Relative Effort scores for outdoor, GPS-based swim activities. We're unable to process the heart rate information from indoor swims at this time.

  • What are Streak Challenges?

Streak challenges ask athletes to complete a certain number of activities for a consecutive number of weeks.

Streaks will perform a little bit differently than challenges as they currently exist on Strava. Streaks will allow different activity types other than just running and cycling to count towards your challenge effort and, unlike other Strava challenges, Streak challenges will not contain a leaderboard. Activity and profile visibility settings will not impact participation in Streak challenges.

The goal of each Streak challenge will vary. For example, we may ask you to upload an activity 4 days a week for 3 weeks, with each activity requiring a minimum of 30 minutes elapsed time. Each Streak challenge will vary, please check the details and eligibility section of the challenge page for rules and information on which activity types count towards the challenge.

How do I participate in a Strava Streak Challenge?

Youll need to join the Streak challenge just as you would any other Strava challenge. You can locate all challenges in the challenge gallery (on Android you can find the gallery in the Navigation Tab, for iOS use the Explore tab). Onceyou'vejoined the Streak challenge you will find a calendar on the challenge page which will display your progress, in green, toward the challenge goal. Please note that all Streaks will begin on Monday.

Where can I check my progress towards a Challenge?

You can view the Challenge page to check your progress. The circle that indicates the day of the week will fill green onceyou'veuploaded a qualifying activity. If you were unable to meet the challenge requirements after the first week the calendar will fill gray to indicate a fail state.

You can find a progress bar on your profile page. This will fill afteryou'vesuccessfully completed your first week. In other words, youwon'tsee any progress here until after the first week, even if you have activities counting towards the challenge.

    FAQ

Ive joined the Streak Challenge mid-streak, can I still participate?

If you have qualifying activities from previous days you can upload those to your Strava account and they will count towards the challenge.

What activities will count towards Streak Challenges?

Streaks allow for a wide range of activities to count towards challenges but not all activities types will count towards all Streak challenges. Check the specific challengeyou'vejoined for more information on what activity types will count.

I have multiple activities uploaded for one day, which one will count towards the challenge?

We'll use the activity that best contributes to the challenge goal. For example, if the challenge requires you complete activities of a certain distance, we'll use the longest activity.

What will happen to challenges as they currently exist on Strava?

Strava Challenges like the 5k, 10k, Half Marathon, Gran Fondo and the Running/Cycling Distance and Climbing challenges will remain unchanged.

On your profile page, scroll down toMy Stats andclick theRefresh Stats button underneath the table. The button may appear greyed out while the system is refreshing and it may take a few hours for the stats to refresh. Some possible causes for profile statistics discrepancies are as follows:

The training calendar includes all activities on your account, including activities that are gym workouts, walks, ski activities, etc. while your profile stats are only sport-specific to cycling, running, and swimming.

Walks and Hikes are not included in running yearly totals.

The displayed total may have previously been inaccurate due to a previous bug where deleted, cropped, or updated activities did not refresh the profile stats.

    FAQ

    How it Works

Sponsored integrations are viewable by both the uploading athlete as well as their followers. Activities recorded as part of a sponsored integration receive the augmented treatment if the athlete uploading the activity has the integration enabled. All athletes, whether or not they are Summit members, may enjoy or disable sponsored integrations of their own activities.

Enabling this feature allows an athlete to share unique details about their activity that may include a device specific header, custom image or enhanced map.

A learn more link will also be viewable to your followers.

These details may vary with the device or service used to record the activity.

    Athlete Controls

As an uploader, you have the option to disable this treatment of your activities. You can manage all partner integrations using the mobile app or on the Strava website under Settings > Partner Integrations. Please keep in mind:

You may only enable or disable this treatment on your own activities.

Opting out of the experience means you will not see any of the enhanced partner content on your own activities.

    Leave us Feedback

Were currently exploring different iterations of this treatment, so please keep in mind that your experience might be different from others on Strava. Furthermore, this experience is subject to change.

If youd like to share feedback about sponsored integrations, please do so here.

    FAQ

How do I know ifI'mviewing a Sponsored integration?

In the feed, Sponsored Integrations will display a sponsored tag in the map or image provided by the partner.

Why does my activity show a branded tag but not a Sponsored tag?

This indicates a partner integration, but one thatisn'tconsidered sponsored.

Idon'twant to see this treatment in my feed. How do I turn it off?

Ability to disable sponsored treatment is controlled by the owner of the activity.

Why has the treatment of my integrated activity changed?

We are continuing to explore how partner content shows up on Strava. Look for improvements as we gather feedback, and thoughtful introductions of new integrations as we dial in how to make them great.

  • Calories (or kcal) is a measure of the energy you've burned during your activity. Calorie calculations are only estimates and there are many different ways to calculate calories.

As of July 2018, Strava shows Calories as they were provided to us from upload partners. If no value is sent, or you record with the Strava mobile app, we use our own calculations.

    3rd Party Calculations

There is a wide range of different algorithms and inputs that can be used to estimate Calories. We recommend contacting the 3rd party for specifics on what data they use to estimate Calories.

Unlike Strava's own calculation, changes to your Strava weight and activity elevation will have no effect on Caloric total.

Changes to settings in 3rd party accounts may not be reflected in Strava.

    Strava's Calculations

To get calorie calculations for rides, Strava uses your power output and a coefficient for human efficiency. Power can be estimated if you enter your weight and the weight of your bike, or you can use a power meter to get a more accurate measure of your power output. See Power Calculations for more details. If you are having trouble getting your Strava Power to calculate, see How to Get Power Calculated on your Rides.

To get calories calculations forruns, Strava requires that you enter your weight. Strava will use your weight and the elevation data and distance of your run to estimate calories burned. If you're having trouble getting calories calculated for your Runs, check or reset your elevation correction by following the instructions on Elevation Correction for your Activities. Calories for runs are a function of speed (grade adjusted), weight, and movingtime. Multiply these together with a scaling factor, and that's theestimate.

    Missing Segments

    Incorrect Matches

    Problematic Segments

    How Segment Matching Works

It's important to keep in mind that each GPS device records its own unique set of data even if, for example, you and your friend are recording the same activity on the same day. When we match you to a segment, we choose the GPS points from your file that fall closest to the segment's start and end. Because of the nature of GPS and the differences in device recording intervals, it's unlikely that there will be a GPS point exactly on top of the segment's start/end. This means that you can be timed over portions of your activity that are slightly longer or shorter than the actual segment length. Everyone is susceptible to this but you may get a short match that works in your favor or a long match that adds a few extra seconds.

What can I do?The more GPS data points you record, the more options Strava has when choosing a start and end point and the more precise your match is likely to be. Your device's recording interval determines how often you record GPS points. Recording intervals often differ from device to device but if you have the option to set your recording interval we recommend one-second intervals.

My Activity did not match a segment that is should have

    Why does this happen?

The most common reason a segment doesnt match on a ride or run is that GPS drift occurred while you were recording your activity. This can cause you to miss the start or end points of the segment - both of which are necessities - or can cause you to trigger our "Gap Threshold" in the middle of a segment.

One other possibility is that it is "hidden." There is a link at the bottom of the ride page (website only) which may say "Show hidden Segments". You may see the segment listed there - and you can unhide it. For more details, see the article here

Any segment, regardless of whether it's a private or public segment, that starts/stops within your Privacy Zone will not be matched to your activity, even if your activitys visibility is set to Only You. However, if during your activity you pass completely through your privacy zone and continue on, that portion of your activity will be visible and you will match to segments within that zone. Its only when your activity starts or ends inside of your privacy zone that those portions are hidden and segments within your zonewon'tbe matched. Removing a Privacy Zone will reinstate segment matches and any associated KOMs/CRs. More information regarding Privacy Zones can be found here.

    What can I do?

If you are looking for details about why a specific segment might not have matched your activity, visit the activity on the Strava website and scroll down to the bottom of the list of segments. Click the link 'Don't see the segment you're looking for?' (highlighted below) to open the Potential Segment Match Analysis tool.

If a segment is missing from your activity when it should have matched please proceed with creating a support ticket and use the Potential Segment Match tool to generate a link. In the analysis tool, select the segment that's missing and copy the link in the address bar of the webpage. Paste the link into the support ticket and repeat this process if there are multiple missing segments.

Alternatively, you can send us a link to the activity page and the link to the missing segment.

    Optimizing Segment Creation

My activity matched a segment that it should not have

    Why does this happen?

Occasionally a ride or run will be falsely matched to a segment or receive an inaccurate segment time. Sometimes this is due to the fact that our segment matching algorithm must be flexible enough to account for GPS drift and can be a little loose with the matching. Poor GPS data can also contribute to inaccurate segment times. There may also be instances where you received a lift or rode in a vehicle for a portion of your activity and the Crop tool can remove that section of your activity and the invalid segment times.

    What can I do?

If youd like to be unmatched please proceed with creating a support ticket and include a link to your ride or segment effort and we can investigate. We can only unmatch segments in cases where it's unlikely there will be future problems with that activity data.

    Problematic Segments

There are certain rules to follow when creating segments that can minimize the number of problems that segment will experience - including false-positives, missing matches, inaccurate matches, and more. We highly suggest avoiding the start or end of a segment if you are going to stop or turn around as the resting time may be included in your segment effort. Here is some more information on .

  • Using Strava on an older iPhone:We recently made a necessary update to the Strava platform that will affect the mobile app experience for a number of athletes. Heres what you need to know:

Whats changed?Strava for iPhone now requires iOS 11.0 or later in order to get the full range of features. Unfortunately, iPhone models 5C and earlieraren'tcompatible with the newer operating systems andwon'tbe able to support the Strava app as they have in the past. Devices with iOS 10 as the last compatible operating system (iPhone 5C and earlier) can continue to use the Strava app if it was downloaded prior to our recent changes. However, no Strava app updates will be available and you may lose access to certain features or functionality. For example:

Youwon'tbe able to give kudos or delete newer activities.

Youwon'tbe able to access segments, kudos, photos, or comments.

Why did you make this change? In order to record all the workouts Strava athletes upload, we had to add more unique numbers to label each of your efforts. Our old 32-digit labels worked till the community hit just over 2 billion activities, and then a switch to the new 64-digit labels was necessary. Unfortunately, older operating systemsdon'taccommodate the 64-digit labels, so athletes who use older iPhones will feel these growing pains more than others.Wedon'ttake changes like these lightly and were committed to keeping Strava accessible to the largest number of athletes possible. Know that no matter what mobile device youre using, your data is secure and remains available on the Strava website.

Which iPhones are fully compatible with the Strava app?

iPhones that can support iOS 11.0 and later can download and run the most recent version of the Strava app. This includes iPhone 5S and later models.

  • The Strava climb categorization is similar to how the UCI categorizes climbs but with some modifications.

When a climb is categorized, for the Tour de France for example, there is a subjective component to the categorization. If a climb is at the end of the stage it could get a tougher category than if it was earlier in the stage. Strava's method is objective, so if a climb is category 1 climb it will always be a category 1.You will see that a segment is categorized by the number on both the segment page and at the list of segments on your activity page.

To decide the category of a climb Strava multiplies the length of the climb (in meters) with the grade of the climb. If that number is greater than 8000 then it is a categorized climb.

    Cat 4 > 8000

    Cat 3 > 16000

    Cat 2 > 32000

    Cat 1 > 64000

    HC (Hors Categorie) > 80000

    Click Settings.

Select 'Sharing accounts' from the left navigation.

    Selecting Segments

All of your starred segments will show up automatically in the Strava Live Segments folder on your ELEMNT after you connect your accounts. If you star another segmenton Strava.com or in the mobile app, it will load on your device the next time you sync. You can star segments almost anywhere you can view them.

Popular Segments based on your location settings will automatically be synced to your device.

If you set a goal on a segment, it will load onto your device as well, along with an effort representing your goal time.

    On your ELEMNTdevice

You will be alerted when approaching the start of a segment thats on your device, and when the segment starts. Please be aware that Live Segments are only available for riding and running activities.

During the segment, you can choose which effort to be compared against. You will always be able to select the KOM/QOM, and you could also have your PR, your goal, or the time from a friend whos a little faster than you. The default priority is as follows:

Goal (If you have one set for the segment)>

    PR

    KOM/QOM

You will be notified when you complete the segment, and whether you beat the time you were competing against - but Strava.com hasthe final word.

Segment notifications appear automatically, but you can cancel out of the live segment experience as it is happening by pressing the mute button.

On your device, you can also temporarily disable individual segments or the entire live segments experience, or permanently delete some or all segments from your device. This will not affect your starred segments or anything else in your Strava account.

    FAQs

Why is my segment time different after I upload then it was on my ELEMNT?

Wahoo ELEMNTdevices use a different algorithm for determining when a user starts and finishes a segment than Strava uses, which can affect the elapsed time reported for the segment. To ensure consistency between users, the times shown on the ELEMNTduring an activity are preliminary, and the times shown on Strava after uploading are final.

Why didnt one of my starred segments show up while I was riding it?

During a ride, if GPS signal is poor, it can be hard to determine whether a user is on a particular segment or not. After the activity is uploaded, Strava can examine the entire activity and more accurately determine which segments were ridden - including the ones that didnt show up in real time.

  • Record, upload, and analyze GPS-based activities with the Strava iOS app

    Recording an Activity

Navigate to the record screen by tapping the circular Record icon located in the middle of the dashboard. Strava will default to recording the activity type set in your Profile (Ride or Run), but you can change this by tapping the shoe or bike icon above the Start button.

To begin recording, simply tap the Start button near the bottom of the screen.

Toggle between the map and stats displays by tapping the pin icon (highlighted below)

You can tap on Splits (if you're recording a run) or Map to see your splits and progress in real time.

    troubleshooting syncing

Pause, Save or Finish an Activity

Tap the square, stop icon to pause your activity. You'll then have the option to either Resume the recording or Finish it. You have a few options to remove resting time from your activity:

It is not necessary to pause your recording while stopped unless you'd like complete control over your moving time. You must be consistent about pausing if you go with this option.

If you'd like the app to auto-pause, the app will use GPS data or your phone's accelerometer to figure out when you're at rest. If you go indoors, you should manually pause or else the obstructed signal may trigger a false auto-resume.

If you turn off auto-pause and don't use manual pause, we would do all of our calculations on the server side after the activity is uploaded. We'd use your GPS data to figure out when you were at rest/moving.

Pressing the Finish button will take you to the Save Activity screen.

Set the activityTitle, Activity Type, Description, Gear, and Privacy settings.

Tap Save Activity to upload to Strava's servers - and be aware that if you tap Discard (and then confirm this choice) - there is no way for Strava to recover the activity.

Your activity will appear on the Feed screen immediately and youll be able to view the full activity details after it is done syncing.

    App Data Usage

While recording there is no data usage unless you're viewing the maps, or have Live Segments or Beacon turned ON. Otherwise, the app just uses GPS while recording. Once you've finished recording the app will need to transfer some data to sync the activity with the Strava servers. That's typically about 1MB for two hours of recording but can vary a bit. There will also be some very small amount of data transfer to update your Feed. Please note, however, that if you can wait for a wifi connection to sync the activity or view the Feed then you can prevent all cellular data usage.

  • Segment Leaderboards are often a highly visible area where bad or improper data can be surfaced on Strava.Users are ultimately responsible for their own data, and Strava provides the tools needed to edit your data. The Activity Flag is separate from the Hazardous Segment flag.

Determining whether an activity deserves to be flagged

How to apply an activity flag

How to resolve an activity flag

    Abusing the activity flag

    Should this activity be flagged?

When not to flag: Sometimes, there can be issues with segment matches but it's not a result of any problems with the activity itself.

If the activity data seems fine, but the segment time or the max/average speed seems incorrect, pleasedo notflag the activity.Instead, proceed with submitting a support ticket so we can review the segment match and the quality of the segment to determine the underlying issue we'll do our best to offer a solution or explanation.

Please familiarize yourself with this article to understand how certain shapes, lengths, or locations of segments can cause matching issues. Below are segment characteristicsthat can cause matching issues.

    Very Short Segments

    Bad Start/End Points

    Tight Switchbacks

    Parallel Trails

    Very Long Segments

    Very Complex Segments

    Tunnels

Also, if the elevation data for an activity is inaccurate, please do not flag. As this does not cause problems on the segment leaderboards. If the elevation data is causing invalid results on a Strava Elevation Challenge, please proceed with submitting a support ticket so we can investigate.

When to Flag: There may also be times where bad segment matches hold top spots because the owner's GPS data is inaccurate, the data was recorded in a vehicle, the activity is categorized as the incorrect sport type, etc.

Top leaderboard spots earned because the data was recorded with vehicle assistance (motor-pacing or drafting a vehicle, receiving a lift in a vehicle, leaving the device on while driving, etc).At this point in time, athletes should use the 'workout' category if their activity containsvehicle or motorized data. These motorized activities should not be flagged if properly categorized as 'workout.'

Top leaderboard spots earned because theGPS data is erratic or recorded at large intervals (10+ seconds).

Top leaderboard spots earned because the activity is categorized as the wrong sport type. For example, a bike ride categorized as a run.

A Strava athlete is recording duplicate activities.

    How to flag

Once you've determined that the activity should be flagged (see guidelines above), you can follow the steps below to flag the activity and remove it from leaderboards. When you flag an activity, a notification is generated on that athlete's Strava.com dashboard.

Find the bad segment match: When you find an incorrect or improper segment time, click through to the Strava Activity page. If you're on a segment leaderboard, you will need to click on the date of the segment result to reach the activity.

Flag the activity and leave a detailed description of the problem: If the activity should be flagged, use the ellipses icon at the left side of the page to select Flag. Select the correct reason for the flag and leave descriptive and thorough comments. Leaving detailed comments is incredibly important for the Support Team to be able to appropriately address the flag, so please be as descriptive and specific as possible. Naming affected segments on the activity, specifying the location of a GPS data problem, and relaying personal knowledge about the area or the athlete is all valuable to include.

If the activity appears to have data that was done by a motorized vehicle, or partially done by a motorized vehicle, select the first option.

For activities that appear to be listed as the wrong activity type, like a ride that is accidentally categorized as a run, select the second option.

If there is bad GPS data that causes inaccurate mileage or segment times, select "Bad GPS data". For specific segment errors, it is helpful if you include which segments are affected in the Comments section.

For other issues that are not listed here, select "Other" and leave a thorough description of the problem in the comment field.

When you're done, press the "Flag" button.Ayellow bar will appear at the top of the activity page signifying that the activity has been flagged. The activity will beautomatically removed from all segment leaderboards. The activity remains on the site, and the segments remain on the activity page with achievements, however, all the public results are removed from the Segment Leaderboards.

How to resolve an activity flag

You can see the flagged status of your activity in several places. On your Dashboard Feed, you will see the word 'Flagged' next to your activity title. Another place you'd see the flags is on your "My Activities" page. If you navigate to the "Training" tab at the top of the page, then select "My Activities" you will see the flagged activities highlighted in red.At this time, flags cannot be created, viewed or resolved via the Strava Mobile App.

When you select the activity that is flagged, you will be taken to the activity details page where you will see specific instructions for the actions you can take to resolve the flag.

After you have selected the option appropriate for the flag, you will be walked through the steps to resolve the flag or request Support review.

If you select "The activity is fine, trust me" the flag will be dismissed. If the activity is flagged a second time, the option to dismiss the flag will not be available, and choosing one of the other options is suggested.

    Abusing the Activity Flag

If we determine that you are not following our flagging guidelines, your ability to flag may be revoked, your flags will be resolved, and/or your account may be at risk for deletion.

  • You can hide and unhide segments to customize which segments will be visible to you throughout Strava. Please note that the Run activity pages do not have this feature, and instead use Starred Segments.

    Bad Segment Data

Segments are a community created/moderated feature on Strava, anyone can create a segment and this means that they will sometimes unknowingly create duplicates or create segments from bad GPS data. Our support team isn't able to delete duplicate/inaccurate segments butthe community can up and down vote segments using the star and hide features. Some examples of bad segment data are:

Bad elevation dataexists if the activity from which the segment was created had bad elevation data. Here is some more information on how elevation is calculated.

Unfavorable start and endpointscan greatly affect whether a segment will create good matches. Here is some more information on optimizing segment creation.

Original segment data has GPS errors or GPS drift may lead to inaccurate matches.

Customizing which Segments will be Visible

In segment-dense areas, it is too hard to display all segments on one ride. Depending on the number of times a segment is viewed, that segment is either shown on the ride by default or "hidden" due to a low popularity rating. The user has the ability to customize which segments are shown on Activity Detail pages and which are not. By "Hiding" a segment, you vote to decrease its popularity and hide that segment on all of your activities. When you "Unhide" a segment, you increase its popularity rating and vote to show that segment on all of your activities. The overall popularity of a segment will determine whether it will be visible or hidden on your activity pages if you currently don't have preferences set for that segment. You will always be shown segments that you have created, starred, unhidden or set a goal on.Please note that the run activity pages do not have this feature, and instead use Starred Segments.

    Hide Segments

Hover over the segment row in the segments tab at the bottom of an activity

A "Hide" button will appear in the rightmost area of the segment row

Clicking "Hide" will prevent you from seeing this segment listed under any activity throughout the site

To view all hidden segment for an activity, simply scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Show Hidden Segments".

    Unhide Segments

Navigate to the activity page that includes a hidden segment

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Show Hidden Segments".

An "Unhide" button will appear in the rightmost area of the segment row when you mouse over a hidden segment

Clicking "Unhide" will allow you to see this segment on all activity throughout the site.

To get Achievements for a Hidden Segment

Segment Achievements are only generated upon upload, and ONLY for unhidden segments. Segments that are marked "Hidden" on your Activity page upon upload will not receive any achievements. To generate an achievement for a hidden segment refer to the following instructions

"Unhide" that segment if it's a cycling segment and the segment if it's a running segment.

Change the activity type to something else and then back again to the proper activity type (this triggers segments to be reset.)

"Refresh ActivityAchievements"using the button located in the actions menu (the wrenchicon).

  • The Refresh Activity Achievements tool can regenerate your achievements for any activity if they do not appear or are incorrect. There are several reasons you may want to refresh your achievements. Currently, you can lose your achievements when switching activity type. You may also be missing achievements from segments that were hidden and you've now unhidden. Please note this tool is available on theweb only.

From the activity page, click the ellipses icon and then Refresh Activity Achievements. Refresh My Results

If you need to refresh your results on an individualsegment or segments use the tool.

This tool may cause you to permanently lose any existing trophies and medals on activities due to the fact that your achievements will be updated to reflect current segment leaderboard standings.THIS CHANGE CANNOT BE UNDONE.

  • There are a few reasons whyyour first split, overall elapsed and/or moving times may be shortened.

Theres a known Apple bug where if you start a recording while the Watch is still connectedwithyour phone, the route on the mapappears to start later and the total distance is shortercompared to the Watch's unsavedactivity summary. What happens is thata few points get recorded into the file that is pulled from the Phones GPS instead of the Watch. When the Watch goes outside and the phone stays at home, it takes the Watch a long time to realize that it is disconnected and that it needs to start getting its own location. To avoid this in the future, start your recording away from your phone if youre going to leave it behind.

If that's not the case, keep in mind thattime data is only written to the file after a GPS connection has been established.Strava gets access to the GPS hardware onceyou'vestarted a recording, so there can be a delay between the start of the activity and when a signal has been acquired. The discrepancy will not appear during the recording, the app will appear to be functioning normally. The issue is only visible once it has been uploaded to Strava.A workaround for the issue is to start an activity outside and wait for about 30 seconds before saving and discarding it - then start a new recording.
