The CEO single-handedly sets the tone for the company culture. The company was handed down to him through the generations so he does not understand or appreciate the hard work that employees do. He leads through intimidation and has been known to berate employees as his whims see fit.
Since the company is family owned, I expect nothing to change... ever. Treating employees with respect and listening to their ideas instead of feeling intimidated by them would be a great start. They hire managers they can push around as opposed to ones that are qualified.
