When there is a lot of work that is available. Lately there hasn't been.

You don't need experience to become a freelance writer and they give anyone a chance.
Why do you feel undervalued and what would make you feel better about your compensation?
The pay is extremely low for the amount of work that is required. This is less than minimum wage at times depending on how much work is even available
