TuneCore FAQs

TuneCore's Frequently Asked Questions page is a central hub where its customers can always go to with their most common questions. These are the 302 most popular questions TuneCore receives.

Frequently Asked Questions About TuneCore

  • 1. What is Two-Factor Authentication, and why should I enroll?

Two-Factor Authentication is an extra layer of account protection that requires your TuneCore login information (email address and password) and a unique code that gets sent to your mobile device. If someone were to gain access to your login information, they would not be able to access your account without the one-time authentication code that would have been sent to your phone. Providing these two pieces of information together helps prevent unauthorized access to your TuneCore account and protects your hard-earned funds.

    2. Benefits of enrolling in Two Factor Authentication:

    Increased account security

Protect earnings/TuneCore balance and personal information

Prevent unwanted access to your TuneCore account

    3. How do I enroll in Two-Factor Authentication?

Navigate to your "Account Settings" page and click ENABLE in the Two-Factor Authentication section.

    4. What are my options for receiving an authentication code?

There are two ways you can choose from to receive your code:

    Text/SMS

    Phone Call

*Message and data rates may apply

Please note, only one of these two secure notification methods can be selected at a time. To change your settings, you can do so in your TuneCore Account Settings page.

    5. How long does it take to get my code?

You’ll receive your authentication code in seconds. If you are having trouble receiving your code, make sure that you have entered the correct phone number and selected the correct country code.

    6. When will I be required to enter an authentication code?

When you log into your TuneCore account

    When you request a withdrawal

When you change your personal information like email, password, or stored bank account

You will also be prompted to authenticate any time you change browsers or access TuneCore from a new device.

    7. Can I turn off Two-Factor Authentication?

Yes. To turn off Two-Factor Authentication from your account, navigate to Account Settings, and click “Disable”. You will be prompted to enter a code one last time to verify that the account owner is choosing to disable authentication.

    8. How do I access my account if I lose my phone or change my phone number?

Please go here for help changing or resetting your phone.

Please go here for additional help.

    9. What if I receive an authorization code that I didn’t request?

If you receive an authentication code but did not request one, there is a chance your account password has been compromised - but don’t worry, whomever is attempting to access your account cannot get the code sent to you. We would recommend immediately changing your TuneCore account password.

*Adding, removing, or editing the phone number listed in the "Contact Info" section of your Account Settings will not change the number associated with Two-Factor Authentication.

  • TuneCore can technically never guarantee a release date as each store takes a different amount of time to process, however if you are looking to set a specific release date, all you need to do is set the “digital sales start date” on the album creation page to your desired release date. The stores will not make your release live in their store until the date you specified.*

If you want your release to go live in all stores at the same time, choose a date at least 4 weeks out. This should give stores enough time to complete their review.

How long does it take for my music to go live in the stores?

*IMPORTANT: Amazon Music & 7digital bothmake preview clips of your song(s) available BEFORE your digital sales start date, as soon as 3-7 business days after distribution for Amazon Music and 7-10 days for 7digital. The release won't be available to buy until your release date, but if you're uncomfortable with having preview clips available before that date, please do not choose Amazon Music or 7digitalas a store for distribution until after or right before your release date.

    You can

    contact us

from the email registered to your TuneCore account a few days before your digital release date and request to add Amazon Music as a store.

Please note: You’ll have the opportunity during the sign-up process to authenticate your artist profile request using your TuneCore account email address and password. This is recommended as it’ll give you faster access to Apple Music For Artists.

Why aren't all the artists in my TuneCore account listed in the dropdown?

You will only see Primary Artists that have content live in iTunes or Apple Music in the dropdown in your TuneCore account. Featured artists, or other roles and contributors, will not be listed.

Although we recommend signing up through your TuneCore account, it is not mandatory. You can still go through Apple directly to sign up as well via this .

TuneCore maintains exclusive synchronization rights to Compositions only. This is to your advantage as it avoids confusion in the marketplace and having too many parties representing the same rights can result in higher licensing fees based on our extensive sync negotiating experience.

If you are associated with a licensing house or music library for your sound recordings we will be able to license the composition portion on your behalf. Please have the interested party email us at

  • TuneCore’s review team should take up to one business day to approve your release. Once your release has been approved, it will be sent to stores immediately. At that point, it will be the responsibility of each store to make the release live.

In order to meet a specific release date in as many stores as possible, we recommend uploading content and paying for distribution 3 weeks ahead of your target release date or pre-order start date. To avoid any additional delays, please make sure your release meets the formatting requirements of our store partners.

Here is the general amount of time it takes our stores to process your release and make it live:

    iTunes/Apple Music: 5 days

    Spotify: 5 business days

    Google Play: 1-2 weeks

    Amazon Music: 1-3 business days

    Amazon On Demand: 6-8 weeks

    Deezer, iHeartRadio: 3-7 business days

All other stores take 1-3 weeks

Remember, these are approximate and we can never guarantee the exact time your music will go live in these stores. Please note, TuneCore has no control over the internal review processes conducted by stores and cannot expedite your release. If you have a required release date we strongly recommend that you distribute your music more than 3 weeks prior to that date.

Ringtones can only be found in the iPhone iTunes app.

  • An explicit track is one that has curse words or language or art that is sexual, violent or offensive in nature.

It is up to you if your music should be marked as “explicit.”

    IMPORTANT:

If the content of your release is determined to be explicit by iTunes (this includes artwork) and is not marked as "explicit," your release may be hidden from sale in the store.

*Explicit content is not sold inBurkina Faso, India, Nepal, and Uzbekistan iTunes territories.

Also, if you mark one track as explicit on your album, the entire album will carry the “explicit” tag.

  • Why do I need to give TuneCore this tax information?

TuneCore has recently undertaken a review of its files and we have been unable to locate your applicable U.S. tax documentation (i.e., Form W-8 or Form W-9). These forms are used to represent U.S. tax status, claim income tax treaty benefits (if applicable), and to provide other information necessary to comply with U.S. tax information reporting and withholding rules.

There are several forms available which do I need to fill out?

Please use the wizard provided on the first page of the tax form, which should indicate the appropriate form for you to complete.

If you are a “U.S. Person” by definition of the IRS ( https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9.pdf ), then you would need to fill out a W-9. If you are a foreign business or non-resident alien earning income sourced from the U.S. then you are required to submit one of the W-8 forms. We highly suggest you use the wizard to determine which appropriate W-8 form you should use, however you can also find more information about which W-8 form to use at the IRS website ( https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw8.pdf ).

Please note, however, that we cannot provide tax advice. You may want to consult your local tax advisor, or the IRS at www.irs.gov, for further information regarding U.S. tax reporting guidelines, withholding, and the appropriate documentation for you to complete.

Do I need to do this if I already pay taxes in my country of residence outside the U.S.?

Yes, you are still required to submit the appropriate W-8 form. There are tax treaties between the U.S. and many countries that stipulate a lower rate of withholding, and in many cases a 0\%withholding, so if you are a resident of a country that has a tax treaty with the U.S. and claim tax treaty benefits on the appropriate form, there will only be tax withholding up to the applicable percentage.

Do I still need to do this if I don’t use TuneCore Music Publishing Administration?

This is not limited to just Publishing Administration but is for all reportable earnings posted to your TuneCore account. Please fill out one form per TuneCore account.

I’m having trouble filling out the form - what should I do?

If you haven’t already, please use the wizard provided on the first page of the tax form to ensure that you have selected the appropriate form to complete. Please also ensure that you have filled out all required fields. It might also help to clear your cookies or use an incognito window.

If you are still having trouble, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

What should I do if I pay more than one artist or entity from my account?

Even if you have multiple artist or entities that you pay out of your TuneCore account, you are only able to submit one W-8/W-9 per TuneCore account, which will include reportable income from all artists or entities linked to your account. Please use the wizard provided, or consult your local tax advisor for more information and guidance on how to fill out the tax form.

Can I fill this form out once and have the information apply to all of my TuneCore accounts?

Unfortunately, each account will need its own tax form, as we don’t have the ability to “link” accounts for tax purposes.

Will I be receiving a 1099 from TuneCore for 2018?

If you are a U.S. person or U.S. resident by definition ( https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9.pdf ) you will receive a 1099 for qualified earnings posted to your TuneCore account in 2018.

As a non-U.S. person, I don’t have a U.S. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)? Do I need to apply for one to the IRS in order to complete this form?

If you are required to submit a W-8 form as a Foreign Person ( https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw8.pdf ) thenn instead of a U.S. ITIN, you can supply your foreign tax ID instead. This will not affect your ability to claim treaty benefits.. That said, we cannot provide tax advice. So, you may want to consult your local tax advisor, or the IRS at www.irs.gov, for further information regarding U.S. tax withholding and information regarding reporting guidelines and the appropriate documentation for you to complete.

Why am I not being allowed to enter Form 8233?

When going through the wizard, please do not choose “personal services” as you are not providing a personal service, but rather generating a royalty income.

How do I know if my form was successfully submitted?

If you can still see the Submit Form button, it means the form hasn’t gone through. Please try again. When the page changes from Submit Form to Edit Form, that’s a confirmation that we have received it.

  • We've created a handy TuneCore Style Guide to help you make sure your release meets the requirements of the digital stores, and goes live as fast as possible.

Download the TuneCore Style Guide at the bottom of this page.

    Formatting Requirements

TuneCore wants to make sure your releases go live as fast as possible. It is very important that you follow these formatting rules, as failing to do so can result in a a store blocking your release until the issue is fixed, and we would hate to see that occur!

iTunes has the right to make any adjustments to releases in order to meet their formatting requirements. This is out of TuneCore's control.

Common Formatting Requirements for Release Titles and Track Titles

    Capitalization

We automatically set auto cap formatting in our system for album titles, track titles and artist names, as this complies with formatting rules set by iTunes and other stores:

“The” must be capitalized when it is the start of an Artist's name. If it is the last word in the title then it must also be capitalized (this applies to the words in the following list). In all other cases, the following words must be lowercase for English:

    a

    an

    and

    as

    at

    but

    by

    for

    from

    in

    into

    nor

    of

    off

    on

    onto

    or

    out

    over

    so

    the

    to

    up

    with

    yet

Artist Name Formatting : If you think you have an exception that goes against our system's cap formatting, such as an artist name like "MGMT" "TLC" or "TuNe-YaRdS," please contact us from the email address registered to your TuneCore account noting the change you'd like to make. If the exception can be made, we will process the request for you. Be sure to include your UPC.

IMPORTANT: Your artist name formatting must be exactly the same across every release you distribute.

    EP

In order to meet Apple's requirements, an album will automatically be identified as an "EP" in iTunes and show as " - EP" after the release title if it meets the following criteria:

1-3 tracks, one or more tracks with a running time of 10 minutes or more, total running time less than 30 minutes

4-6 tracks, with a running time of less than 30 minutes

Albums that do not meet the above criteria will not be identified as an EP.

    Single

In order to meet Apple's requirements, an album that contains 1-3 tracks, with each track being less than 10 minutes, will automatically be identified as a single. The term “- Single” will automatically appear in iTunes after the album title.

Albums that do not meet the above criteria will not be identified as a single.

    Cover Songs

Cover songs CANNOT include the original performing artist in the track title or artist field.

    INCORRECT:

My Way (Originally Performed by Frank Sinatra)

My Way (Cover of Frank Sinatra)

My Way (Tribute to Frank Sinatra)

    CORRECT:

    My Way

    My Way (Acoustic Cover)

For more important information on cover songs, please go here .

    Karaoke and Tribute Albums

Original performing artists should NEVER be in the artist field of your release

The only artist that can be listed in the artist field is the karaoke or tribute band performing the song

"Karaoke" cannot be the sole name of an artist. You can incorporate the word "Karaoke" into the artist name, such as, "The All Star Karaoke Group"

Track titles must indicate that this is a karaoke song. Acceptable formatting would be: “Title (Karaoke Version)” or “Title (Instrumental Version)”

There must be no leading vocals in the song

You can include the original performing artist in the track title. Acceptable formatting would be: “Title (Originally Performed By) [Karaoke Version]” or “Title (In the Style of) [Instrumental Version]"

Common Formatting Requirements for Artist Names

    Multiple Artists and References

Each separate artist name appearing on your release must be entered in a SEPARATE artist name field on the album level or on the track level. You can do this in our system simply by clicking the 'Add Multiple Artists' link when you are creating a release.

Note: if you need to add multiple artists to an album title (not a single or ringtone), you must contact Customer Care here before you distribute. This will ensure that your formatting is submitted to iTunes correctly.

IMPORTANT: Only the artist name alone must appear. This means you cannot add extra information. Below are some examples of unacceptable artist names with extra information.

    Incorrect Formatting

    Issue

    Correct Formatting

    John Doe (Guitarist)

    Shows instrument

    John Doe

    Cunningham, John

First name must precede last name

    John Cunningham

    JohnJohn

    Incorrect spelling

    John John or John-John

    Slash (of Guns N' Roses)

    Includes band name

    Slash

    Elvis Presley (1935-1977)

    Includes birth and death dates

    Elvis Presley

Use of Parenthesis and Brackets for Multiple References

For albums that are deluxe versions, remastered versions, re-releases, radio-edits, volumes, etc, and you are referencing this within parenthesis or brackets, the first reference must always be in (parenthesis) and anything referenced after the parenthesis must be in [brackets]. For examples:

    INCORRECT:

    Colorful [Deluxe Version]

Love Letter (Live Version) (Radio Edit)

    CORRECT:

    Colorful (Deluxe Version)

Love Letter (Live Version) [Radio Edit]

If any song is a live version, you must reference the song as a live version as such: "Song Name (Live)"

    Abbreviations

The following abbreviations are acceptable. These are all case-sensitive:

a.k.a. (This can only be used in titles and is NOT allowed in artist names)

    #

    &

    DJ

    feat.

    No.

    Pt.

    Pts.

    TV

    vs.

Vol. (Albums that have 'Vol.' in the title must not be written as 'Volume')

You are not required to register your copyrights with a government office prior to using TuneCore, however many artists feel more comfortable registering their copyrights before making their songs available for worldwide distribution. • Important: Your audio must meet the format specifications below to go live in the digital stores. Content holders are responsible for properly formatting their content.

Follow these instructions to convert your audio to the recommended 16 bit (sample size), 44.1 kHz (sample rate), 1411 kbps (bit rate) stereo WAV files in iTunes before you upload to TuneCore:

Open the iTunes application on your computer.

Search for your song(s) in your iTunes Music Library and highlight it (do this by clicking once on the song).

Go to Preferences (On a Mac, this is under the iTunes drop down menu. On a PC, iTunes Version 10 or older, this is under the Edit drop down menu. On a PC, iTunes Version 11, this is under the square icon on the top left of your iTunes window).

How Not to Get Blocked by Stores For Formatting Error

Once you've clicked Preferences, make sure you are on the General tab. Go down to where it says Import Settings (if you have an older version of iTunes, you may have to click where it says Advanced and then click on Import Settings ).

Change Import Using to WAV Encoder . Then click to change Setting to Custom and a new window will open.

In the Custom window, change the Sample Rate to 44.1 kHz and Sample Size to 16 bit . Make sure Channels says Stereo and Stereo Mode says Normal . Then continue clicking OK until you are back to your iTunes library.

With your song title(s) still highlighted right click and select Create WAV version. Your song(s) will immediately begin converting. If you have a newer version of iTunes you may need to go to File, click Convert and "Create WAV Version"

Once the song has finished converting, you will see that the highlighted song(s) is the old version. We recommend you drag the newly converted file(s) (not highlighted) to a folder on your desktop directly from the iTunes library so you will be able to find it later.

You can upload your new audio file(s) to TuneCore.

    -----------------------

If you are exporting from a recording program or importing the audio from a CD (also called "ripping"), you can change the settings/preferences of your export to be 16 bit (sample size), 44.1 kHz (sample rate), 1411 kbps (bit rate) stereo WAV files.

NOTE: If you're using an audio converting website that is not professional software or iTunes, we strongly recommend that you convert your audio again in iTunes afterwards to the required format. Other programs can often embed hidden coding within your audio files, which will likely make the files unrecognizable by the digital stores and cause your release to be rejected.

  • Please note that TuneCore always delivers your artist and album information exactly how you entered it in your TuneCore account.

However, each store does a certain amount of auto-formatting and will automatically place two albums together if their system believes they belong to the same artist (sometimes this happens if 2 different artists have very similar names or the same name).

If your release is not appearing independently in iTunes or Apple Music you can actually submit the fix directly in your TuneCore account here.

Click on your Artist Name that is experiencing the issue and then "Artist ID's".

From there you can click "Manage" and proceed through the process to either move your content to an existing page in iTunes or to move your release/s to a brand new artist page.

Please be aware it may take 1-2 weeks for the artist separation to publish completely.

If this issue happened to your releases on any other stores, please contact us and we will immediately contact the store so they can separate you from the other artist and have all of your music show together. Please be sure to write from the email registered to your TuneCore account and note the affected UPC(s) and stores.

    Paid Streams:

For songs streamed, Spotify has deals with necessary rights holders in all of its launch countries.Spotify and these rights holders have agreed upon a royalty based on how frequently your music is played. Each stream earns you a share of Spotify's advertising revenue. The actual amount varies and depends on the ratio of advertising revenue and your percentage of the total number of streamson Spotify in a given month.

When a subscriber streams your music, you get paid a proportionate share of Spotify's subscription revenue per month calculated on terms set out in TuneCore's blanket agreement with the store (this usually excludes streams during a subscriber's free trial). Payments will fluctuate each month, depending on the amount of subscription revenue generated and how often your music was streamed.

Some countries have special rules, so that even before taxes, tariffs, exchange rates or treaties kick in, some money is deducted by the store to pay fees and royalties dictated by local copyright laws. So from the amount you receive for sales of your music in that country, some amount will be deducted to pay the copyright holders under the local copyright laws. Even if the copyright holder is you, some laws require certain royalties to be paid out in that country. However, no matter what, you willbe paid the pay rate, after taxes, exchange rate adjustments, etc.

Also, if your content is played in Spotify Radio funds will be paid to your TuneCore account.

GOOD TO KNOW: We've built our TuneCore Publishing Administration to get songwriters (the person or entity that controls the copyright to the lyrics and melody of the song) all oftheir royalties from thesales and use of their songs around the world. To learn more about the additional separate royalties you earn as a Songwriter, see our Publishing Administration Help section.

Pandora is a music streaming and discovery platform that utilizes its proprietary Music Genome Project to deliver personalized music tailored to the tastes of music listeners. Pandora has 3 tiers of service:

Tier 1: Ad-supported radio, with listeners getting extra skips and limited replays of a recently played track by watching a 15-30 second video.

Tier 2: “Pandora Plus” limited interactive radio, with more replays and skips and the ability to listen to offline radio stations including Pandora’s most popular feature, Thumbprint radio.

Tier 3:"Pandora Premium" with full on-demand music selection and playback functionality.

Pandora may not make your content available in Pandora Premium if they are unable to clear the necessary publishing rights.

Please note that your music may not be available for streaming on Pandora Premium until Pandora is able to license certain music publishing rights for the underlying musical composition(s) of your sound recording(s).

Pandora relies on Music Reports Inc. to clear these rights. Therefore, in certain cases, your music can’t go live on Pandora Premium until whomever publishes the musical composition behind your music is registered with this company.

If you both wrote and self-published the music you’re distributing, you’re welcome to sign up for TuneCore’s Publishing Administration service .Once you sign up, TuneCore will, on your behalf, take care of getting your music properly registered and licensed to be streamed and sold in any major store.

NOTE: TuneCore cannot guarantee that delivered content will be added to Pandora’s playable library, which is curated.

Please be aware that the following types of content will not be added to Pandora’s playable library:

Spoken word or other non-music audio

    Karaoke

    Ringtones

    Nature sounds

Content using Middle Eastern, Asian or Cyrillic script.

    Soundalike covers

As a result, we are not able to provide a time frame for when content will become available in their services (if ever).

Amazon On Demand allows you as an artist to have unlimited physical inventory made upon each purchase that is placed for your physical CD. There are no up-front manufacturing costs and you upload just the same way as you would for distributing to any other digital store.

Albums that are distributed to Amazon On Demand must not be longer than 78 minutes and must not be over 99 tracks. Track titles must not be longer than 130 characters. If these requirements are not met, the release will not go live in Amazon On Demand.

IMPORTANT: Please note that submitting your release to Amazon On Demand does not mean your music has been submitted to Pandora. If you are submitting to Amazon On Demand for consideration on Pandora radio, your album must have AT LEAST TWO TRACKS.1 track albums will not be eligible for consideration. For more information on submitting to Pandora, please click here .

    Go Live Time

Please note, we are currently working with Amazon to resolve ingestion issues. We hope to be delivering music to them again in the coming weeks.

It can normally take 6-8 weeks for content to become available in Amazon on Demand.

    Amazon On Demand Store Territories

Amazon On Demand is available in the United States & Japan andhas international shipping available.

How The Process Works for Amazon On Demand

When your album is ordered at Amazon.com, it will be manufactured with high quality four-color artwork (a CD booklet, tray card and four color printing on the CD) in a shrink-wrapped jewel box. Amazon will fulfill and ship the order just like any other Amazon product. CDs for sale at amazon.com can be found by selecting "Music" next to the Search button's dropdown or simply by searching the artist name or album title.

If you don't have your own artwork, no problem! You do not need full artwork. All you need is an album cover image. At TuneCore you will pick from one of ten templates that layout and design all the rest of your artwork for free. Artwork Specs:

Your album cover art has to be a higher quality than a digital album cover as it is being physically printed.

    Dimensions:

    1600 x 1600 pixels

    300 dpi (dots per inch)

    IMPORTANT:

When you distribute your release to Amazon On Demand through TuneCore, their store will automatically put a color border around your artwork (they will use the color that best matches your artwork). We have no control over this, as it is done by Amazon On Demand so as to not cut off any text or image on the cover art.

Amazon only accepts languages that use Latin-1 characters. This excludes languages like Russian, Japanese, Arabic, etc.

What if I have my own complete jewel case artwork?

We do not offer a way for you to submit custom artwork to Amazon.com for physical distribution (Amazon On Demand). We do however provide pre-designed templates for artwork, which you will find when you are creating your release in TuneCore as long as you have selected Amazon On Demand as a store for distribution. If you do not want to use one of our pre-designed artwork templates, you can distribute to Amazon On Demand on your own directly by going to this link: https://www.createspace.com/

Please remember, if you are choosing to go through CreateSpace on your own, do not select Amazon On Demand as a store when you distribute your release through Tunecore.

In TuneCore, you select what wholesale price tier you want your album to sell for starting at $8.98 and going up in one dollar increments to $19.98. Your album will be available for purchase on Amazon.com at the price you pick at TuneCore.

Pay Rate (How Much Amazon On Demand Pays You)

From each sale of your CD at Amazon.com, TuneCore pays you 40\% of the sale price selected. As always, TuneCore passes through 100\% of what we receive for your sales automatically into your TuneCore account balance. So, for example if you choose a price of $10.98 you will receive: $4.39.

Can I order my own CD?

Yes! Just go to Amazon.com, search for your CD, and order it.

Will I get a physical copy of my CD before it goes live?

No, there will not be a physical copy made before it goes live.

  • Generally, stores report an entire month’s sales to TuneCore on a two-month delay. So, if a sale of your music occurred in January, you would receive the money and sales reports in March.

TuneCore posts your sales reports and money in your TuneCore account every Friday for all stores, as long as we’ve received reports.

iTunes’ sales are typically reported on the first Friday of the month.

We do not send you notifications when you get paid. Please check your account starting two months after your music has become available in stores.

If you've had no sales activity for a particular month in any store, you will not receive a sales report for that month.

How do I see my sales?

NOTE: If music sales take place in the last few days of a month, the stores often carry those sales over to the next month’s reporting statement. Also, we cannot report money to accounts until the stores have sent us that period's sales reporting and money. If there is ever a delay in a store reporting sales to us, there will be a delay in posting sales to accounts for that store.

  • The digital services that TuneCore distributes your music to pay for downloads and streaming sales. Streaming services (likeSpotify) pay artists based on a percentage of revenue that the service receives. For example, if your music was streamed on MySpace, MySpace reports to TuneCore your royalties based on a percentage of their revenue and we then post that money to your TuneCore account.

In addition, you may be eligible to collect other types of streaming royalties from SoundExchange. SoundExchange is a non-profit organization established by the Copyright Royalty Board. SoundExchange collects and distributes digital performance royalties on behalf of recording artists, master rights owners (like record labels), and independent artists who own their masters. SoundExchange collects these royalties from three main sources:

    Non-interactive webcasters

: SoundExchange collects royalties from non-interactive webcasters, that is service providers that do not allow users to pick and choose what they listen to. Pandora is an example of a non-interactive webcaster, whereas MySpace or YouTube are interactive (or on-demand) streaming services because a user picks exactly what he/she wants to listen to.

    Satellite and Digital Cable TV

: When your song is played through digital cable and satellite television music related services like Music Choice (Digital Cable) and Muzak (Dish), SoundExchange collects and distributes the royalties.

    Satellite Radio Services

: In the world of terrestrial radio, it's only the songwriter and publisher that receive performance royalties, not necessarily the performing artist (unless they own or control their underlying composition(s)). However, in the world of satellite radio, like SiriusXM, SoundExchange monitors their plays and allocates the money to recording artists accordingly.

In order to collect potential royalties owed to you on these types of services, you will need to register with

    Sound Exchange

    directly, which is free.

Please also note that SoundExchange is different from performing rights organizations such as BMI, ASCAP and SESAC (the “PROs”). The PROs collect royalties when music is publicly performed on behalf of songwriters and publishers, not the performance artists per se (although as mentioned above, they may be the same person). Registration with the PROs is a separate process. Visit their respective websites for more information.

  • If you are getting an error when you upload artwork to your TuneCore release and it's in the correct format ( see TuneCore's artwork requirements ), it's possible that there was an issue when the art was encoded. This can cause a problem when TuneCore's system reads the file.

The following steps should fix this issue:

Open the Preview application (on a Mac) or use another image viewing program

Click "Export" or "Save As" from the "File" menu and export your image as a ".png" file on your computer

Upload the new .png artwork to your TuneCore release

  • Sorry, we can’t reverse a take down but we can help you get your music live again in the stores.

The reason we can’t reverse your take down is that when music is removed from the stores, they consider the action final. The stores view each release (UPC) as a final product that should only be removed if the rights have been lost and/or there is no intention of selling that product again.

Currently, the only way to re-release removed content is to create a new release, upload again and checkout. Unfortunately our system can’t copy your content. The good news is we just lowered our first year distribution price to $29.99 per album and $9.99 per single.

The new release will need a new UPC(these are unique and cannot be duplicated in our system). If you used optional ISRCs or TuneCore ISRCs, you can use them again for the same exact tracks.

*It is possible for you to receive streaming revenue in your account through the iTunes Match and iTunes Radio services.

    Singles

In TuneCore’s system a single is one (1) track.

A single in the iTunes Store can be one (1) release with one to three (1-3) tracks.

The tracks must be under 30 minutes total and all individual tracks must be less than 10 minutes.

Any releases that meet the above requirements will automatically have “- Single” inserted in the release title within the iTunes Store.

As a default, tracks will be sold for $0.99 in iTunes (if they are less than 10 minutes.)

If a single track is 10 minutes or longer, iTunes will automatically sell the release at an album price.

    Albums

An album in TuneCore’s system is any release with two (2) or more tracks.

There may be cases where you release an album through TuneCore and the release is labeled as a “Single” or “EP” in the iTunes Store.

If a song on an album is 10 minutes or longer, iTunes will automatically label the track as "album only," the album price will default to $9.99, and iTunes customers will only be able to buy this track by purchasing the whole album.

    EPs

In order for a release to be considered an EP, it must meet one of the following two requirements:

The release has a total of 1-3 tracks, one or more of the tracks is/are 10 minutes or longer and entire release at less than 30 minutes.

The release has a total of 4-6 tracks and entire release at less than 30 minutes. If your release meets the above requirements and you do not have "- EP" in the title of your album, iTunes will automatically insert "- EP" in the title when delivering your album to the store.

    Purchasing and Pricing

Customers can buy whole albums as well as individual tracks off of an album (the only exception being if a track is 10 minutes or longer it is only available with the purchase of the whole album).

By default, albums are automatically priced in iTunes using this equation: # of songs X $0.99 USD = price of album.

EXCEPT if the album has more than 10 songs, in which case the price will automatically default to $9.99 USD.

Songs are automatically priced at $0.99 USD unless the song is 10 minutes or longer, in which case it will be priced as an album (if it’s a single) or available only with purchase of the full album (if it’s on an album).

The price for other territories will automatically be converted to that country's currency.

You can select any Album Price from USD $1.99 - $15.99 USD in dollar increments but it must meet the following requirements:

If you want to sell your album for $1.99 USD, the number of tracks cannot exceed 4

If you want to sell your album for $2.99 USD, the number of tracks cannot exceed 7

If you want to sell your album for $3.99 USD, the number of tracks cannot exceed 10

For a Single (less than 10 minutes): You can select a price of $0.69, $0.99 or $1.29.

For track prices on an album (this will alter all tracks): You can select a price of $0.69, $0.99 or $1.29.

If you would like to take advantage of diffent pricing options please <A style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline" href="http://help.tunecore.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/273">go here for more information</A> .

EXCEPTIONS: iTunes (and all other digital retailers) reserves the right to sell music and/or music videos any way it wants and at any price it wants. When your songs, albums or music videos sell, you will always receive the wholesale price (the money you receive from a sale; please refer to the payout rate chart provided below), but iTunes can sell your music or video for a penny, a million dollars, or anything in between, which is the retail price.

For music, iTunes reserves the right to make a song “album only,” meaning an iTunes customer is unable to download and purchase the song individually without buying the entire album. iTunes does this solely at its own discretioniTunes decides and TuneCore (and our customers) have no say in the matter.

Important :iTunes does not accept soundalike cover songs (more and more stores are starting to take this stance as well). A soundalike cover is a song that sounds very similar to the original. Stores consider this content deceptive and misleading and do not want their customers to purchase this material by mistake. If you distribute soundalike covers to this store the content willget hidden and we will not be able to reverse this or issue any refunds.

Pay Rate (How Much iTunes Pays You)

Generally, for songs sold individually off of an album or single in iTunes, your wholesale payout rate is as follows:

    iTunes Stores Territory

    You Receive Per Song

    iTunes Australia

    AUD $0.99

iTunes Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam

    USD $0.43

    iTunes Canada

    CAD $0.70

    iTunes Europe

    EUR 0.71

    iTunes Hong Kong

    HK $3.72

    iTunes Japan

    JPY 89

    iTunes Latin America

    USD $0.70

    iTunes Mexico

    MXN $8.40

    iTunes New Zealand

    NZD $1.17

    iTunes Singapore

    SGD $0.79

    iTunes Taiwan

    TWD $12

    iTunes United Kingdom

    GBP 0.57

    iTunes United States

    USD $0.70 (No exchange required)

Albums are sold in their entirety in two possible ways:

1.Albums under 10 songs are priced by the song. To calculate how much you would receive from the sale of an EP or an album with fewer than 10 songs, multiply the number of songs by the pay rate of that iTunes store.

    2. Generally, for albums with 10 or more songs sold in iTunes, your wholesale payout is as follows:

    iTunes Stores Worldwide

    You Receive Per Album

    iTunes Australia

    AUD $9.99

iTunes Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam

    USD $6.00

    iTunes Canada

    CAD $7.00

    iTunes Europe

    EUR 4.90

    iTunes Hong Kong

    HK $34.80

    iTunes Japan

    JPY 865

    iTunes Latin America*

    USD $7.00

    iTunes Mexico

    MXN $84.00

    iTunes New Zealand

    NZD $11.75

    iTunes Singapore

    SGD $7.20

    iTunes Taiwan

    TWD $120

    iTunes United Kingdom

    GBP 4.30

    iTunes United States

    USD $7.00 (No exchange required)

Important: Payment earned outside of the U.S. is lower for various reasons. First, payment on international sales is made in the local currency and therefore subject to exchange rate fluctuations when converted to U.S. dollars. Second, local laws may require that before remitting the money to TuneCore, iTunes must deduct sums for applicable local taxes or other tariffs depending on the territory where you distribute your music. Third, the current wholesale price paid to you for international sales of your music may reflect a deduction for publishing royalties, as iTunes pays those royalties to local copyright societies and publishers (the “Copyright Deduction”), and then the copyright societies pay out those royalties to the rights holders (even if you are the rights holder and/or control the underlying rights to the composition). The Copyright Deduction may vary per country depending on local laws and customs at the time of payment, and are subject to change..

TuneCore ALWAYS pays you 100\% of the proceeds that you earn on your sales through iTunes Worldwide after these deductions are applied.

Pay Rate for "Complete My Album" (How Much iTunes Pays You)

iTunes lets customers who purchased one or some of the tracks from an album complete the album purchase without having to pay the full album price ("Complete My Album" or “CMA”). The iTunes customer pays an adjusted price to obtain the additional tracks in the album. For accounting purposes, the CMA album will be accounted for as a sale of a full album, and the previously purchased track is considered a return (this will show in your monthly sales report as a negative sale). If the purchaser buys a song (i.e. as a single before the album is available), the purchaser can only buy the album, when available, as a CMA purchase if 1.) the song on the album has the same exact track title, artist name and track length as the single; 2.) the same ISRC is used on the song; 3.)the album price isequal to the sum of tracks.

When a CMA purchase is made, this will cause a 1 week sales reporting delay for your monthly sales report.

Example: If you had an album in iTunes U.S. with 15 songs and one of your fans purchased one song for $0.99 from the album(say, track #8) you'd get the track Pay Rate of $0.70. If the same customer came back and later purchased the album in its entirety as a CMA, you would earn the Pay Rate for a whole album sale for albums over 10 songs/tracks: $7.00. A refund for the original track #8 purchase would be generated. It would "cancel out" the next sale you had of that particular track. That is, if in the same month, someone (anyone) purchased track #8, that sale would be "cancelled out" by the CMA refund and would not appear on your sales report. The refund remains until cancelled out by a sale, and can persist over many months until another track #8 is purchased.

If the same version of a song (meaning same exact recording with the same exact ISRC) is available for purchase as a single and it also appears on a full length album, a "complete my album" option may show on the full length album for iTunes customers who already purchased the single. The "complete my album" option will not appear if the same version of a song is available for purchase as a single and on an EP (6 songs or fewer).

Singles will not CMA to an EP.Only Singles or EPs CMA to full Albums.

  • In November 2011 Apple launched its new iTunes Match service. This service costs iTunes users an additional fee per year and generates revenue for TuneCore artists.

With this service, Apple will make all music in an iTunes user’s music library available to that user on up to ten iTunes compatible devices through streaming and/or downloading without having to upload the music onto each and every device. It does not matter if the song was purchased from the iTunes Store the iTunes Match service will also include access to songs that were ripped from a CD, downloaded from the Internet or became available to the user via other means.

How much do TuneCore artists get paid when their recordings are available via the iTunes Match service?

You get paid each time your music is re-downloaded or streamed via the iTunes Match service.

The amount TuneCore artists get paid for the iTunes Match service is based on a unique revenue share model. Each time your music is accessed via iTunes Match, iTunes pays you a pro-rated share of the total subscription revenue generated by the iTunes Match service that includes both recording and publishing revenue. Keep in mind that the payout rate will fluctuate each month depending on how much subscription revenue was generated and how often your music was re-downloaded and/or streamed.

As always, TuneCore will pay out 100\% of the revenue it receives from iTunes for your music; however, iTunes Match payments are unique in that they include both recording and publishing income. And if you do not control the underlying musical composition(s) to the recording(s), you are obligated to remit the publishing income to whomever owns or controls the musical composition(s); usually the songwriter or his/her publisher.

How much publishing income do I have to pay to third parties?

For any iTunes Match revenue that you may receive, seventeen percent (17\%) of that amount represents publishing income. Therefore, if you receive $1.00 in iTunes Match income for one of your sound recordings and do not own or control the underlying musical composition to that sound recording, you would have to give seventeen cents ($0.17) to the songwriter or publisher that owns or controls the underlying musical composition.

Once a release has been paid for and delivered to the stores, we can't guarantee that all stores will make requested changes.

What changes cannot be completed after a release is distributed to the digital stores?

For all other change requests, You have TWO OPTIONS when it comes to processing release changes:

OPTION 1: Take Down Your Current Release and Distribute a New Version

This is recommended as it guarantees the change will be made in all stores.

This is a permanent action that cannot be reversed.

You will have to resubmit the release and pay for distribution again (we CANNOT issue a refund for therelease you are taking down).

Your release will receive a new UPC code because it’s technically a new product. However, if you have your own optional ISRCs or want to re-use the TuneCore ISRCs, you can use them again on the same exact tracks.

All stores will permanently remove any reviews and comments related to the original UPC as well as store playlists that included this UPC.

    Remove Content

OPTION 2: Make Changes to Your Current Release

This route is not recommended, as we cannot guarantee the changes will be made in all stores.

For Art Work and Audio changes we will email you instructions on how to replace your content.

Spotify will reflect changes, but it could take at least 2 business days. iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon Music generally process changes, but this may take up to two (2) weeks.

Other stores take weeks or months to process changes (if at all).

Once Spotify confirms who you are and gives you access, you’re all set. (It may take a little time for your blue verification check mark to appear on your Spotify profile.)

You no longer need to fill out a separate form and you no longer need 250 followers. Verification is now available for all artists.

TuneCore is proud to present Custom Engineering by AfterMaster Audio Labs.Aftermaster Audio operates state-of-the-art mixing and mastering studios in Hollywood California and is comprised of some of the recording industry's most decorated and talented engineers.

The Aftermaster team has the largest combined discography of any audio company in history and we are excited to provide our loyal customers with mastering from their seasoned engineers.A comprehensive list of Aftermaster's discography can be found here.

To help with the mastering process, please keep the following in mind:

Please send Aftermaster 24bit (or 16bit) .wav or .aiff files. They should also be 44.1kHz (or higher). MP3s will not be accepted.

Do not send Aftermaster separate elements for your MIX session. A mixing service is currently not offered through Aftermaster so they require just your FINAL, approved, stereo mixdown. The format for this should be 24bit (or 16bit) .wav or .aiff files, and 44.1kHz (or higher).

Aftermaster will deliver your finished mastered products inBroadcast Waveformat (BWAV). The reason for this is because it’s the most versatile (it works for both Mac & PC platforms). If for any reason you need your files in a different format, you can visit our Help page here that gives instructions on how to convert files to .wav in iTunes.

For any questions regarding your master, pleasecontact AfterMaster directly .
