The "people first" culture at H-E-B is real. Although partners have diverse personalities and come from diverse backgrounds, the commonality is that we care about the business and treat each other respectfully. Jerks aren't likely to get hired, and won't last long if they are.

Leadership understands that the company is building and improving people as much as they are running a business. It may sound corny to those hardened by corporate America cynicism, but at H-E-B kindness and empathy are just as important as maximizing profits or optimizing operational efficiency.

I don't need to put on a "corporate" persona at work. I worked for a company where sharing credit and building consensus were seen as weaknesses. Treating others kindly and with respect and working together as one team, rather than competing silos, is part of the H-E-B culture.
