Babbels Review feature is based on the proven method of spaced repetition, and this is used in our product via Knowledge Levels. These levels tell Review which stage of the process youre at with a piece of vocabulary, and youll see an item more or less often depending on its level.

How many levels are there?

There are six levels in total, with Level 1 being a completely new piece of vocabulary, and Level 6 is when its in your long-term memory. Each time you review something correctly, it moves up to the next level. Heres the detailed breakdown:

If you get something correct, the word or phrase moves up one level and becomes due again in 4 to 180 days (depending on the new level)

If you make one mistake, the item stays at the same level and becomes due again the next day

If you make more than one mistake, the word or phrase moves down a level and becomes due again immediately

In short, words and phrases that come easily to you will end up at a higher level and need to be reviewed less. Items you have more difficulty with will have to be reviewed more often until they make it into your long-term memory.

Note: Review works on the principle of Knowledge Levels on desktop and in the app, but you can only see and change an items level on desktop.

You can use Babbel on your smartphone, tablet, laptop, and desktop computer. Here are the system requirements needed for your different devices.

Desktop

Youdon'tneed to install any special software to use Babbel on your laptop or desktop computer. Babbel runs on all modern computers with an updated internet browser.

On your laptop or desktop, you can access Babbel through www.babbel.com. If youre using an older computer, check to see if you meet these requirements:

Operating system: either Windows 7 or above, or Mac OS X 10.12 or above

A current internet browser: Chrome version 58 or above, Firefox version 50 or above, Edge

Computer and processor:

Display: 1024x768 or higher resolution monitor

1GHz processor

1GB RAM

Note: We advises against using Babbel on Safari or Internet Explorer because theydon'tprovide our users with the best learning experience. If youre using one of these browsers, youre more likely to experience issues with our speech recognition function, and our engineersdon'tconsider them as secure as Chrome or Firefox.

Mobile

To use Babbel on the go, youll need to download the Babbel app for your mobile device. We have both an iOS (Apple) and Android version of our app, which you can download here.

If you have an Apple iPhone or iPad, youll need to be running iOS 10.0 or above.

If you have an Android phone or tablet, youll need to be running Android 6.0 or above.

Note: The Babbel app may not be supported on rooted devices or on those with a custom ROM.

Our experts tailor every course for each language to your native language. Why? Because your native language influences how you learn another language. For example, English speakers learn Spanish in a different way than French speakers do. We build our courses to help English speakers learn in a more efficient and effective way.

If you havent used Babbel for a while, or perhaps you took a course that is a bit too complicated for you, you might want to delete vocabulary from Review. When you do that, these itemswon'tcome up in your future review sessions. Heres how to remove vocabulary from Review:

Go to your Babbel dashboard on a computer

Click Review in the top navigation bar

Scroll down to My vocab

Find the relevant words or phrases you want to delete (the search bar and filter dropdown make this easy)

Find the trash icon on the right-hand side of the page

Click the trash icon to delete the item

Note: You can only delete items from Review on desktop, but deleting any items will be reflected across all of your devices.

Payment of the subscription fee gives access to your chosen language on www.babbel.com as well as in our mobile apps for Android or iOS.

In-app purchases are also available in the Babbel apps. Different prices and conditions may apply in these cases. This depends upon Apple App Store or Google Play Store policies in your country.

The courses which focus primarily on vocabulary can be found in the Words and Sentences category.

There are more than 3000 words for each of the following learning languages:English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish.

The following learning languages have more than 2000 words:Danish, Dutch, Indonesian, Norwegian, Polish,Russian and Turkish.

Review is Babbels review feature that automatically reminds you when words and phrases are ready for you to practice. Review is based on the proven method of spaced repetition. That means your personal review intervals are determined for each word or phrase based on how oftenyou'vereviewed it and how often you get it right. This method helps move vocabulary from your short-term memory into your long-term memory.

Review is available on desktop via your dashboard and in the Babbel app on your mobile devices.

How to access Review

On any device, youll be able to see a list of all the vocabulary and phrases thatyou'velearned so far. Youll also be prompted to review a batch of items if Review has decidedthey'reready for you to look at again.

Desktop

To access Review on www.babbel.com, just click Review at the top of the screen in the navigation bar.

Mobile

To access Review, tap Review at the bottom of the screen.

What is spaced repetition?

Spaced repetition is a concept from psychology, and its based on time intervals. It emphasizes that learning and retention are more effective if you take time between learning new concepts and then repeat them over time. Researchers have been studying this effect for over 100 years, but if you want to read some more recent studies on its effectiveness, you can find two here and here.

How does this apply to vocabulary in the Babbel app?

Items come up in Review after a lesson is completed and in the days and weeks that follow. Each time you repeat a new word or phrase and get it correct, it will move up a step. If you keep getting it correct, the time until you practice it again increases. After all those steps are done, Review determines that the item is in your long-term memory. In this way, Babbel doesnt just help you memorize vocabulary it helps you truly learn a language.

How long are the Review intervals?

For each knowledge level a word or phrase moves up, the longer the interval before it will need to be reviewed again. At the beginning or whenyou'vemade only one mistake the interval is only one day. On the second level, its four days, then seven, then 14, and then 60 days. Once a word reaches the sixth level, it will be six months before it is due for review again.

Level 1 = one day

Level 2 = four days

Level 3 = seven days

Level 4 = fourteen days

Level 5 = sixty days

Level 6 = six months

Whats the best way to use Review?

In order to commit vocabulary to your long-term memory, you need to practice often and at optimally spaced intervals. For this reason, we recommend using Review regularly ideally every time you use Babbel.

The good news is that youdon'tneed to worry about reviewing at the right time! Review reminds you automatically and knows exactly what vocabulary to present to you for optimum learning.

If there's a delay between you having paid and getting access to the courses, or if you're being asked to pay again, please make sure you're logged in with the email address you used to register with Babbel.If you are logged in with the correct address, just log out then log back in again. It sounds simple but should fix the problem. Please also check that your learning language is correct, by clicking on the flag on the top-right corner of the website, or by tapping on Profile >Settings gear wheel >My Languages in the app.

Note: If you are accessing Babbel on a smartphone or tablet, you will need to download the Babbel app. It is not possible to access the Babbel lessons via the internet browser on a smartphone/ tablet.

On www.babbel.comWhen you've logged in to Babbel, your current learning language is indicated by the flag at top right of your Babbel homepage. Click on that flag and a drop-down menu will appear with the option to either change or add a new learning language.iOS apps & Android appsOpen the app, tap onProfile at the bottom of the screen > Settings gear wheel > My languages. You can then select a new learning language from the list underneath I want to learn.

You can get a certificate for every course you complete, but please note that these can only be accessed from www.babbel.com, not from our apps.By clicking on the My Level andMoreCourses tabs at the top of the website, you'll see the option to download a certificate next to each course which has been completed. Simply click on the icon to get the certificate. You can print it or save it as you would any web page. The certificate, although not a formal qualification, includes information about the content and the level of the course and proves whatyou'velearned with Babbel.

The name that is shown on a Babbel certificate corresponds with what you have entered in the First Name and Last Name fields of your Babbel profile. To change this, log in to www.babbel.com, click on your screen name at top right then go to Profile and settings. Don't forget to click on Save after making your changes.

Please also be aware that updating your operating system or the Babbel app itself will temporarily remove any previously downloaded items. All of your progresswill however still be there.

If you subscribe, you'll be charged, in advance, on a monthly, three-monthly, six-monthly or yearly basis according to the payment plan you choose. For example, if you choose a monthly subscription, you will be charged every month. If you choose a three-monthly subscription, you will be charged every three months.

The recurring payments will be charged automatically until you decide to cancel. Babbel will never charge you unless you voluntarily enter your payment details on our payment page.

Payments made via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store will be handled directly by Apple or Google.

If you accidentally created multiple Babbel accounts, or are not satisfied with our product, you might want to delete your account. Heres how to do it:

Caution: Deleting your Babbel account does not cancel a subscription linked to that account. Ifyou'vemade any form of payment, it's important to contact us at [email protected] before deleting your Babbel account.

To delete a Babbel account:

Go to your dashboard on a desktop computer

Click on your name in the upper right-hand corner of the page

Select Profile and settings from the dropdown

Select Settings on the left-hand side of the page

At the bottom of the page, click Delete your Babbel account

Confirm that you want to delete your account by clicking OK

Youll receive an email asking you to confirm the deletion

Click on the link in the email to delete your Babbel account

Note: If you delete your Babbel account, your learning history and stored vocabulary will be permanently lost.

Wedon'twant to see you go, but if you wish to stop your plan, here are the ways you can cancel your subscription.

Tip: If youdon'tknow the method you use to subscribe, check your original invoice to determine if you pay through Babbel or through the Apple App Store or Google Play store.

Tip: If you pay through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and wish to pay through Babbel instead, please cancel your App Store or Google Play subscription and then pay for a subscription through Babbel.

Note: If you've subscribed through Babbel, you can only cancel via Babbels website.

Babbel subscriptions renew automatically. If youdon'twant to continue learning with Babbel, you should cancel your subscription before your next payment date. You can cancel anytime, up until the day before your subscription renews.

Note: If you cancel your subscription, you will still have access to all your courses until your subscription ends.

To check when your subscription will renew, youll need to check based on where you bought your subscription.

Babbel website

If you purchased your subscription through Babbels website, you can check its renewal date from your Babbel dashboard on the Account information page. The date when your subscription expires is also stated in the email you'll receive confirming the cancellation.

App Store

To check when your Babbel subscription renews in the Apple App Store, youll need to be on your phone or tablet.

You can change your learning language or download a different app at any time, but standard subscription fees give access to one language only. Yes, you can access your Babbel account on as many devices as you like! All you need to do is make sure that you log in each time with the same email address you used to create your Babbel account. If youre using Babbel across devices, your progress is synced so you can pick up where you left off.

You can access your account via www.babbel.com on a computer or laptop, or via the app on an Apple or Android mobile device.

While we recommend revisiting contentyou'vealready encountered in Review, repeating any lesson is easy! In fact, youre free to redo any lesson or course as often as you like. Heres how.

On desktop

Go to your dashboard

Select My Level or More Courses in the navigation bar

Find the lesson you want to repeat

Select Start / Do again

To repeat a whole course, select the first lesson of the course based on the instructions above. Then work through all the individual lessons. You may need to click on Show all lessons in the bottom-left corner to see your previously completed lessons. Heres an example:

The speech recognition measures how well your pronunciation matches that of the audio track you are hearing.

On www.babbel.com

If it's a good match, a green check mark will appear in the microphone icon and the system will move on to the next vocab item. If it's not a good match, the microphone icon will shake. You'll have the chance to try five times before the system moves on to the next item.

On an iOS or Android app

Tap the speaker icon to hear the audio track then speak when the microphone icon appears. If your pronunciation is a good match, the vocab item will turn green and the app will move on to the next item. If it's not a good match, the vocab item will shake and turn red. You'll have to try at least one more time before seeing the option to skip to the next item an arrow at the bottom-right.

Most vouchers offer access for a limited period of time and youdon'tneed to pay to have access. These vouchers will expire automatically and youdon'tneed to cancel anything. There are, however, cases when you would need to cancel if youdon'twant to continue with Babbel:

Upgrades to subscriptions

When you redeem most vouchers, youll be offered the chance to upgrade to an All Languages subscription. If you take advantage of this, payment is made directly to Babbel and the subscription will renew until you decide to cancel.

The All Languages subscription would then merge with your voucher. This means that youll have access to all languages for 12 months, plus the length of the voucher, before optional auto-renewal.

For example: If you have a 6-month voucher and upgrade to the All Languages subscription, you'll then have a 12-monthly All Languages subscription with auto-renewal. The time from the voucher will be added onto the first chargeable period, meaning that you start with a one-off total of 18 months before auto-renewal.

We'll send the full details to you by email after you have made the payment.

Discount vouchers

Some vouchers offer you a reduced price on standard Babbel subscriptions. With these vouchers, you will make a payment directly to Babbel after the voucher has been redeemed. Again, the subscription will automatically renew until you decide to cancel.

On www.babbel.com you can change your Display Language at any time on the Settings page under Profile and settings. Don't forget to click on Save settings after you've made the change.Within aBabbel multi-language App, just open the app's menu, tapMy Languages,then tap onI speak to select the display language you want to use.

Within aBabbel single-language App, just open the app's menu, tapSettings, and underGeneral,tap onDisplay language.

If your Babbel voucher codeisn'tworking, there are a couple things you should check.

For one, Babbel voucher codes are case sensitive if your code includes capital letters, its important to type them in that way. Also, if you are copy-pasting the code, make sure that you have not accidentally included a space at the beginning or end. An extra space will make the code invalid.

It's also important to note that all vouchers are valid for a limited time. If your voucher has expired, you'll see a message with this explanation and unfortunately, youwon'tbe able to redeem that voucher.

If youre still have problems, write to our support address and send along the voucher information.

Ifyou'veforgotten your password, you can easily reset it at our Login page on desktop. If youre already logged in but want to update your email address or password, you can do so on Babbels website under Profile and Settings.

Heres how to reset your password:

Click on Forgot your password?

Enter your email address in the open field

Click on Reset password

We will then send you a link to your email so you can set a new password.

Open the Babbel app

Tap on Log In at the bottom of the page

Tap the option Continue with email

Enter your email address and select Reset password

We will then send you a link to your email so you can set a new password.

Tip: Your new password should contain at least 6 characters, including at least one capital letter!

When you first start a lesson on the website, you will be asked whether you want to use speech recognition or not. Here is how you can access it:

1. After choosing a lesson, you will see the option to continue with or without speech recognition. Click on With speech recognition (microphone required) then the orange Continuebutton.

2. Your browser may show you a message asking to allow access to your microphone. If so, click to share/allow access to your microphone. If this doesnt appear, move to step 3.

3. You will then be prompted to test the microphone sensitivity. Say a couple of words until the volume display reaches the green area, and adjust the sensitivity if necessary. Then, click on the orange Continuebutton to begin the lesson.

You can go back and adjust the microphone sensitivity at any time, via the Audio Settings button at the bottom of the screen in a lesson.

If you change your mind during a lesson and want to take it with/ without speech recognition instead, you can click on the microphone icon at the bottom-left corner of the screen to turn it on and off. Please note however that this will take you back to the start of the lesson.

When you first start a lesson on the app, you will be asked if you would like to practice speaking. If no, tap on No speaking. If yes, tap on Practice speaking. This will then allow access to the microphone and activate the speech recognition feature.

If you choose No speakingbut later change your mind, this can easily be changed. Just tap on the microphone icon at the bottom-left corner of any lesson, and you can turn the speech recognition feature on and off.

If you are having problems with the app recognizing your voice, tap on Profile > Settings > Scroll down to and tap onMicrophone, and then adjust the microphone sensitivity level.

Your existing subscription will be automatically cancelled, and any time remaining will be rounded up to a full month, and then added on to the first payment period of the new subscription. In order to get new vocabulary from your short-term memory into your long-term memory, Babbel recommends that you use Review after each time you take a lesson. In order to best remember these words and phrases, weve equipped Review with four different ways for you to practice:

Writing type the word or phrase required

Flashcards try to remember the translation, then click on the flashcard to check if you were right

Speaking speak the word or phrase shown

Listening listen to the word, then click on the correct multiple choice answer

Each of these four options is available on both desktop and in the Babbel app.

This is the language of your Babbel interface. All menus and translations will appear in this language. We offer both American English & British English.

Other languages offered: French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Spanish and Swedish.

Important! If youre an English speaker, its important that you stick to only one form of English when you use Babbel, especially if you use more than one device. Your stored vocabulary is linked to a specific language combination and American English & British English are treated as two different languages, and therefore won't synchronize with each other.

While we believe in the power of Review, sometimes you need a little more control over your studying. Thats why we have a few features on Babbels desktop version that allow you to customize your review sessions.

Note: These features are only available on desktop, not in the mobile app.

Filter by course or level

If you want to review whatyou'velearned in a specific course, that's easy. The same can be said about words or phrases at a certain Knowledge Level (meaning how well Review thinks you know it).

Heres how to review words from a specific course:

Go to your Babbel dashboard

Click Review in the top navigation bar

Under My vocab, hover over the dropdown to filter

Hover over either Knowledge Level or Theme (theme lets you filter by course)

Click on one of the filters to the right that youd like to see

Click on Review these items to begin your review session

Manage review frequency

If youre taking a class alongside Babbel or use other methods to supplement your learning, you might want to change the frequency that you see certain words in Review. The principle of Review is that it has six Knowledge Levels, with 1 being for wordsyou'vejust learned and 6 for wordsyou'vefully mastered. Ifyou'velearned a word outside of Babbel and want to review it less frequently, then you should move it up a Knowledge Level or two. Heres how:

Go to your Babbel dashboard

Click Review in the top navigation bar

Scroll down to My vocab

Find the relevant words or phrases you want to change (the search bar makes this easy)

Find the column Knowledge Level on the right-hand side of the page

Select a circle corresponding a higher Knowledge Level

We offer many ways to learn a language with Babbel, including on your computer, laptop, smartphone, and tablet. On your computer, you can access all your Babbel courses online, without having to download any additional software. Youll just need an up-to-date internet browser and an internet connection to complete your lessons.

To start learning a language online on your computer, first sign up for an account. Ifyou'vealready registered an account with us, log in here. Heres the full step-by-process to access Babbel on your computer:

Click on Log in at the top-right corner of the page

Log in using Facebook, Google or your email address and password. If you want to log in with your email address, just type it in in the fields provided

Need a little motivation boost? Your weekly learning activity can be tracked on the My Activity tracker - aim to get some dots on the board and build a habit.

At www.babbel.com on your computer or laptop, you will find your activity tracker under My Progress on the Homepage.On the Android and iOS app for your phone/tablet, you will find your activity tracker on the Profile screen.

You can also track your in-course progress on Babbel.

At www.babbel.com on your computer or laptop, on the Home page you will see your course name and how muchyou'vecompleted in the My Progress area.On the Android and iOS app, you will find your course name and lesson progression at the top of the Home screen. To browse the courses and select a different one, just tap on Courses at the bottom of the app screen.

To type a diacritical mark (such as an accent mark or umlaut), you can tap and hold on the base key to show more options. For example, hold down on the A-key for or .

To type a symbol such as an apostrophe or hyphen, you will find these by tapping the 123-key on your keyboard on mobile. This will open a keyboard of numbers, punctuation marks and special characters.

Many European languages use letters with diacritical marks, such as the umlaut in German, the cedilla and circumflex in French, and the tilde mark in Spanish.

Please follow the steps below to access your Babbel courses via the app:
