  • Thats perhaps the most common question. Here is the scoop: receiving a ticket in exchange for volunteering is incredibly rare. If it does occur it usually applies to people who work within the organization year-round as volunteers, fulfill an essential team role, and are highly accountable. These are not roles that are easy to jump into. Generally a person will volunteer with a group for a while, sometimes years, before being involved enough to require a gift ticket.

  • Before the event begins, a map of the event is posted on the Burning Man website, and announced in the Jackrabbit Speaks email newsletter. Youll see shaded areas reserved for theme camps and event services. Outside of these shaded areas, there are no reserved spacesits all open camping and is available on a first-come basis. As you might expect, there tends to be more space at the outer perimeter of the city, but all of the event camping is fairly densely packed. You may take as much space as you need for your vehicles, shade and sleeping structures. We ask only that you not land grab or take more room than you need.

You can do a web search to find photos of previous years to get a sense of the population density and the somewhat chaotic camping environment. Be assured, we will not run out of spacewe are permitted for a specific number of participants and we plan accordingly.

  • Participation forms (such as the BRC Art Grant application, the Volunteer form, and the BRC Participation form) are the first step to participation. Fill one (or more!) of these forms out if you're bringing art, want to volunteer, are bringing a theme camp or mutant vehicle, etc.

  • The answer is, it depends. There are departments that will only accept experienced Burners. Some departments love new folks. If there is a team that you are interested in, take some time to read their description and requirements now, so youwon'tbe surprised or disappointed later. You can find team descriptions here in the Volunteers section. Being a part of the event is a great way to get acclimated. If youre a first-timer, be careful with your commitments just going to the Burn can be an overwhelming experience! Consider volunteering your time after the event. If you do decide to lend a hand during the event, make sure to schedule some relaxation and play time into your day. Depending on the length of your stay in Black Rock City, a good rule of thumb is not to sign up for more than three shifts in your first year. If you work three shifts and love it, you can always sign up for more.

  • You are responsible for managing your own shower needs. We do not provide showers or places for you to shower. Please be aware that shower water is considered gray water and a pollutant that cannot be spread on the ground. Imagine if everyone dumped their dirty shower water full of slimy dead skin cells, sunscreen and body oils on the ground! This is a Leave No Trace event (the largest in the world) and gray water clearly leaves a not-so friendly trace.

So, we ask that you collect all your gray water and dispose of it properly. This webpage discusses Gray Water and how to manage it http://burningman.org/event/preparation/playa-living/gray-water / .

  • Thank you for wanting to create art for Burning Man! If you want to bring art to the playa, its worth noting that most installations contain an interactive element. This allows participants to fully engage with the piece, instead of viewing it from a safe distance as we are used to in our museum- and gallery-oriented world.

Participants are encouraged to explore and interact with the art, and may well find themselves helping an artist to build a structure or performing some task to activate an art object. Touching, climbing, entering, spinning, engaging, and exploring are encouraged.

Please read the list of guidelines and expectations about bring art to the event here: http://burningman.org/event/art-performance/playa-art/

In addition, this service offers faster arrival, speedier entrance, reserved camping, and quicker departures.

  • Music of nearly all types is available at Burning Man way too much to assemble in one place. Unlike most festivals, there is no central booking for our event, and there are spontaneous musical experiences all the time that surprise and delight participants. That said, a long-time Burner, known as the Rockstar Librarian, volunteers to pull together music listings into an annual guide. Though not directly associated with Burning Man, she'sa volunteer like the rest of us, who saw a need and filled it.

  • The bestway to know that a third party ticket is real and valid is to buy it from someone you know and trust.

If you find a ticket for sale by an unknown third party, the best first step to take is to ask for their order confirmation number. Sharing this number will in no way compromise the seller's order and will allow you to check make sure it is not listedas a ticket number that has been canceled or voided on our Voided Tickets & Vehicle Passes List. If a seller is not willing to share their confirmation number with you then the sale is probably not legitimate and you should steer clear. Please note that just because an order number or ticket number does not appear on this list does not guarantee its authenticity & validity.Things to know about Burning Man tickets & things to look out for:

Burning Man tickets are mailed in June so no one will have a paper ticket in hand before then.

We absolutely do not have print-at-hometickets. Anyone trying to sell you a print-at-home or digital ticket is trying to scam you.

Each year we find people trying to scam would-be ticket buyers by asking them to send payment via Moneygram. Do not fall victim to this!

You are placing yourself at risk by buying a marked up ticket from eBay, craigslist, or ticket reselling websites such as viagogo, stubhub, and vividseats. When we discover tickets being sold for above face value we void them.

    Ticket features:

Burning Man tickets have numerous subtle security features. Do not be fooled by a color copy with holographic sticker film around the edges.

The imagery on the ticket is very crisp and detailed. If what you are being offered is blurry or out of focus it is likely a fake.

Burning Man tickets always feature an intricate emboss (a raised part of the paper that gives it texture). You should be able to locate this easily. If the ticket doesn't have a prominent emboss it's probably not real.

There is always different metallic foil on the back.

Each ticket has a unique QR code, with the corresponding information displayed next to it. Use a free QR code-scanning app on your phone to check that the QR reads the same info as is printed next to it.

  • While kids are absolutely welcome at Burning Man, and have been a part of Burning Man since its beginning, the decision to bring children under age 18 to Burning Man should not be taken lightly, especially if you have never attended. Many adults struggle to manage the harsh and unpredictable elements and environment as it is, and providing care for children can add a level of complexity that parents should take time to consider. The desert can be very hot and arid and staying protected from the sun and hydrated is very important. Children are especially vulnerable to these elements. There are also areas of the event that are adult-oriented and not appropriate for children. For this reason, children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

Please check out this section of our website for more information regarding kids at Burning Man http://burningman.org/event/preparation/playa-living/kids /. The link includes a very handy Survival Guide for Families.

  • No. We do not offer single day or weekend tickets. Burning Man is an experiment in creating community through building a temporary city. Relationships are created, neighbors meet one another, and our collected survival is challenged. This is not a spectator event. It is difficult for you to take a role in the community if you are in Black Rock City for less than 24 hours. In order to experience the true essence of Burning Man, you will want to become part of our community. Therefore, there are no day passes sold, and no discounts given based on the length of stay. Tickets are good for the entire eight-day event, but you may attend as many of those or as few days as you wish.

  • The 10 Principles of Burning Man Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey wrote the Ten Principles in 2004 as guidelines for the newly-formed Regional Network. They were crafted not as a dictate of how people should be and act, but as a reflection of the communitys ethos and culture as it had organically developed since the events inception.

    The 10 Principles are:

    Radical Inclusion

    Gifting

    Decommodification

    Radical Self-reliance

    Communal Effort

    Civic Responsibility

    Leaving No Trace

    Participation

    Immediacy

We will update our Voided Tickets & Vehicle Passes List after sales have begun. Please note the list has not yet been updated for 2019. We have no problem with people selling their unneeded tickets for face value (plus service fees) and this is possible to do using eBay's "Buy it now" feature. The majority of listings on Viagogo,StubHub, and Vividseats are speculative listings, which means that the sellers do not actually ownBurning Man tickets to back up their listing. Further, their terms of service are not at all favorable to buyers and the seller may cancel your order right up until a few weeks before the event, leaving you without a ticket. As a community service, please flag and report above face value listings directly to the websites they are listed for sale on.

  • Only you can decide how much time you would like to spend volunteering. Each volunteer department varies as to how much time they need, expect, or ask of their volunteers. There are a wide variety of commitment levels available. Do a little research on your chosen team(s) so you know what their requirements are before you sign up for shifts. Plan carefully, and try not to commit to something you will not follow through on. If you sign up for one shift and show up for it, everyone is happier than if you signed up for 10 shifts and made it to six.
