The company doesn't yet have a good way to measure people's success or contribution. I see fantastic work out there and those people aren't sometimes as rewarded as well as those who are a squeaky wheel and don't really act like a team member. It's rare but it does occur.

I know my market value - on my paycheck. I am not earning nearly as much as some of the other people who we have hired to whom I know I more more experienced and skillful.
The benefits are atrociously expensive.
I know that I could earn more elsewhere, but I would not want to trade the culture and support I have for more money. I am aware that we pay other people with less skills in my area of expertise much more.
Benefits are too expensive for Contracting employees and the options are not a part of my compensation.
