How employees describe working at Cognex
Be a human and show compassion and empathy
Good team and experience, moves fast
The company has the worst culture. They are not doing a good job in terms of taking care of employees. Logistics is a the worst place to work at. I would never recommend this place to anyone. No job security. They hire people and remove them stating no reason and logistics will give you a trauma.
Cognex thinks they do a lot of things right but they're not nearly as wonderful as they think they are. Very old-fashioned, stuck in the 80s company from a strategy and culture perspective. Good tech, good people overall, but some real strange decision making at the top.
The company care about expenses at the time of 'lay offs', but any how the celebrations these guys are doing lavish. Just to fool the investors, the management does reduction in the 'head count'. Great companies do 'lay offs' in very rare cases, but Cognex does frequently. Not reliable work culture

What is the onboarding process like at Cognex and how long does it last?
When I started a couple years ago, there was no process and I don't know if that has changed now. Anyhow, as a software engineer I was given change requests (aka bug reports / tickets) to work on and had to figure it out on my own. Some of my coworkers where kind and helpful but the time they could spend to explain things to someone who is new was very limited. Others just wanted to see you fail. In my department there were more people let go than who made it through the first 6 months. I got "lucky" and made it to the point where I got efficient enough to not have to worry about my job anymore and the tasks changed a little more towards developing new features than only fixing bugs but I never got to the point where I liked the working atmosphere there.
What skills do you need to be successful in the Engineering department at Cognex?
You need political skills. Your best bet to make it far up in the Engineering department at Cognex is to brownnose your manager and agree to what he says. At least try to keep the amount of own ideas you communicate to a minimum. You definitely want to network with other managers to keep your options open and get some leverage and gain power. It's not about how good your actual Engineering work is. Results don't matter much. Don't get me wrong, if you are lacking basic Engineering skills you will get kicked out quickly but from what I have seen, exceptional Engineering skills won't bring you far up either.
What's the work from home policy like at Cognex?
There is no single "work from home policy" at Cognex. It depends on the office you are in, your role and your manager. I've worked in an office where there is basically no work from home (with a few exceptions) and now I am working in an office with a mix of Engineers and sales people and there is a big variance. Some sales people are in the office only once a month but most Engineers are in the office every day.
How much diversity is there among employees at Cognex?
I have worked for Cognex in Europe, China and in the US and my subjective impression (without having concrete numbers) is that the diversity was above average when compared to offices of other companies in the same region.
