  • Course features differ based on whether you're enrolled in the audit (free) or verified (paid) track of a course.

Paid or Verified track: With this track, you will have access to all course materials including graded assignments. You will have full access to the course material until the course ends. After the course ends, you will still have access to the material, but you will no longer be able to submit graded assignments or earn a certificate.

You will pay a fee when you select the Verified track. Your fee allows us to fund the running of the course, grade your work, and award you a certificate upon successful completion. You can add the certificate to your LinkedIn profile or resume, or in certain cases stack it towards a larger credential, such as a Professional Certificate or MicroMasters program.

Free or Audit track: With this track, you will have access to all course materials except graded assignments, and you will not earn a verified certificate the end of the course. You will be able to access the free content for the expected course length that you see on the course About Page (for example, 6 weeks). The time limit starts at the course start date or the learners enrollment date, whichever is second. After this duration, you will no longer be able to access that course material.

If you decide that you do want to earn the certificate, you can pay to switch to the verified track by the upgrade deadline and take the graded assignments required to earn the certificate. As always, financial assistance is available for learners who need it.

Upgrade deadlines are clearly displayed in a course banner.

  • You might want to enter a mathematical or scientific expression into an assignment, into the edX calculator tool, or into a course discussion.

For assignments in the body of the course and for the calculator tool, you enter plain text, and the edX system then converts your text into numbers and symbols that appear below the response field.

Entering math expressions in course discussions is different from entering math expressions in a math problem or in the calculator. In course discussions, you use MathJax to format the text that you type. For detailed information about how to enter math expressions in course discussions, see Math Formatting in Course Discussions in the DemoX course.

Note: For information about using screen readers in assignments containing mathematical expressions, see Completing mathematical problems using screen readers.

Both the calculator and the response fields in math problems accept a selection of characters that represent numbers, operators, constants, functions, and other mathematical concepts. You might recognize parts of this system if you have used math programs before.

If your course offers the calculator tool, the calculator appears as a small icon on all pages in the body of the course. To open the calculator, select the calculator icon. To close the calculator, select the X that appears when the calculator is open.

    Scientific notation and metric affixes

The calculator includes an information page that shows an abbreviated version of the information in this topic. To see the information page, select the circlediicon next to the input field.

    Plain text guidelines

When you enter your plain text into the calculator or the response field, follow these guidelines.

Arithmetical operations: Use standard characters for addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (*), and division (/).

Multiplication: Be sure to indicate multiplication explicitly. That is, instead ofmc^2typem*c^2, and instead of5a+4b+3ctype5*a+4*b+3*c.

Operation order: Use parentheses (()) to specify the order of operations and to make your expression as clear as possible. Use curved parentheses (()) only. Do not use brackets ([]) or braces ({}).

Exponents or superscripts: Insert a caret (^) before an exponent or superscript. If the exponent or superscript includes multiple characters or is an expression, surround the expression with parentheses. For example, you can enterx^norx^(n-1).

Subscripts: Insert an underscore (_) before a subscript to indicate a subscript. If the subscript has multiple characters, type the characters without a space. For example, you can enterv_IN-v_OUT. Note, however, that subscripts cannot currently include operators or parentheses.

    Avoid whitespace.

Do not use equal signs (=).

Because the system is case-sensitive, make sure you use uppercase and lowercase letters carefully.

Note: The edX system accepts both constants and metric affixes. Be careful to distinguish between constants and metric affixes. Constants stand alone, while metric affixes must be combined with numbers. For example, ccan be a constant representing the speed of light or a metric affix meaning “centi”. When you usecas a metric affix, do not include a space betweencand the number. When you usecas a constant, indicate multiplication explicitly. The following examples show the difference:

    2c=0.02(2 multiplied by 0.01)

2*c=599584916.0(the speed of light multiplied by 2)

    2M=2,000,000(2 multiplied by 1,000,000)

    2*M= 2 multiplied by the variable M

For more information, see these other topics:

    Using constants in math expressions

    Using functions in math expressions

  • Proctored exams are timed exams that you take while proctoring software monitors your computer's desktop, webcam video and audio. The data recorded by the proctoring software is transferred to a proctoring service for review. Proctored exams may or may not be required for your course and enrollment track. If you are required to take a proctored exam for your verified certificate:

You cannot take proctored exams using the edX mobile app

You will need to install the proctoring software on your computer each time you take an exam

Before you take the exam, you must verify your identity by taking a webcam photo of your face, your photo ID, and use a webcam to scan the desk and the room where you will take the exam.

While you take the exam, you must follow edX's proctoring rules and requirements. If your course exam has different rules, your course team will let you know.

While you take the exam, the proctoring software monitors your computer, including any software that is running, and streams the exam data to the proctoring software via the cloud. The software also records video and audio from your webcam.

After you end your exam, the exam session is reviewed by the proctoring service. You will receive results within 5 days of submitting the exam.

To be eligible for course credit, you must pass the exam and also receive a Satisfactory result for the proctoring review.

Get started with a proctored exam

View the Proctoring Software System Requirements to ensure that your setup will work, as well as the steps to prepare to take a proctored exam. You must have a working webcam, and we recommend 1GB of free space on your machine. Your space should be uncluttered, with no writing visible on walls or surfaces, and you must be alone in the room. More details about your test-taking environment will be provided within the course materials.

Proctoring services on edX are supplied by a 3rd party vendor called Software Secure. If you get stuck or have a technical issue with the proctoring software you are welcome to contact Software Secure's chat which is available 24/7 or call themat 1-844-224-9759.

  • A computer with a camera is necessary to complete verification. If you do not have a computer with a built-in camera, a webcam, or a mobile device you can certainly use any other computer to verify. We recommend that you ask if your local library has available webcams or borrowing a computer from a friend.

You can also verify your identity using a smart phone or tablet by navigating to the edX Identity Verification page in a mobile browser.

  • A verified certificate shows that you have successfully completed an edX course with a passing grade in the verified track. You must also have verified your identity using your webcam and a photo ID that has the photo and name on the same side, with a name that matches your full name in your edX account. For more details about ID verification, see Best Practices for edX Photo Verification.

Verified certificates are available for a fee that varies by course. Many students use verified certificates to apply for jobs and university admissions.

    Test Environment Rules

The Computer You Use to Take the Test

    Your Behavior

    Additional Time or Special Allowances

    Consequences of Rule Violations

The following proctored exam rules are the basic rules for “closed book” exams.

Note: Some proctored exams have different or additional rules, so check with your course team. For example, some proctored exams allow you to use reference material or a calculator.

Any additional rules will be visible along with the exam instructions before you start the exam.

    Test environment rules

You must take the exam in the same room that you scanned during the proctoring setup for the current exam.

Note: You must complete a webcam scan of the room where you will take the exam every time you take a proctored exam. However, you do not have to take all of your proctored exams in the same room.

No other person is allowed to enter the room while you are taking the proctored exam.

The lighting in the room must be bright enough to be considered “daylight” quality. Overhead lighting is preferred. If overhead lighting is not available, the source of light must not be behind you.

You must sit at a clean desk or table.

The desk or walls around you must not have any writing.

The room must be as quiet as possible. Sounds such as music or television are not permitted.

The following items must not be on your desk or used during your proctored exam, unless posted rules for the exam specifically permit these materials:

    Calculators

    Textbooks

    Notebooks

    Phones

The computer you use to take the test

The computer you are using to take the exam must not have more than one display or monitor. For example, if you usually use a laptop with a monitor connected, disconnect your monitor and use only the laptop screen.

You must close all other programs or windows on your testing computer before you begin the exam.

You must not use the following tools:

Programs such as Excel, Word, or PowerPoint

    Communication programs such as Skype

Any website page other than the exam window in your course, including other content on edX.org

    Your behavior

You must verify your identity using a photo ID that has your name and photo on the same side. The name must match the full name you use in your edx.org account. You can change your name in your edX account.

You must dress as though you were in a public setting.

You must not use headphones, ear buds, or any other type of listening equipment.

You must not communicate with any other person by any means.

You must not use a phone for any reason.

You must not leave the room during the exam for any reason, unless posted rules for the exam specifically permit you to do so.

    Additional time or special allowances

If you have a disability and need additional time or specific accommodations to take the exam, consult your organization’s disability resources or the course team before you make any choices on the exam page. The course team must approve your request and make any adjustments before you start your exam.

    Consequences of Rule Violations

If you violate the online proctoring rules and receive anUnsatisfactorystatus, you automatically receive a score of 0 for the exam. For most courses, you are no longer eligible for academic credit.

  • When you verify your identity, that verification is effective for one year, for all courses. If you enroll in the verified track for another course, you pay for that course’s certificate, but you do not have to verify your identify again.

Note: The verification expiration date does not impact the time you have to finish a course. To earn a certificate in your course you will need to reach a passing score before the course end date.

Once your photos expire you may simply resubmit new photos from your dashboard to cover future courses.
