  • An odd issue has been introduced with the Finale v25.3 update - for some Windows users, Finale will opendeauthorized when launchingthe application by double-clicking on a Finale file (.mus or .musx), even after you have authorized the program. This issue can be preceded by a failure for Finale v25.3 to assert itself as the version of Finale that should open Finale files after installation.

This issue was resolved with the v25.4 maintenance update released on June 29th, 2017. To get the latest version of Finale, please check out this article.

If this is still not working for you, don't worry - your authorization issues could be caused by some other factor. Please feel free to contact Customer Success for more information.

  • Resolved: As of Finale v25.4

It has become apparent that there is a limit on the amount of space taken up by plug-ins (of the editing variety, not audio) that Finale is using.

By reaching this limit (still undetermined) Finale will exhibit some odd behavior like Finale crashing when usingFile>Open, or the ARIA Player plug-in window appearing blank.

To workaround this issue, you can reduce the amount of space taken up by plug-ins by moving any unused plug-ins out of Finale's architecture. Here's how...

Removing unused plug-ins to save space

    Close Finale.

Right-click on your desktop and choose New > Folder.

Name the folder something like "Unused Finale plug-ins".

Hold down the WINDOWS key on your computer keyboard and press the letter R at the same time to open the Run dialog box.

    Type in:

    C:\Program Files\Finale\Plug-ins

Look through the plug-in items in this folder. Find either some individual plug-ins or whole plug-in folders that you aren't using and move them to the "Unused Finale plug-ins" folder on your desktop (for safe-keeping, you can move these plug-ins back in if you need them later).

    Launch Finale.

If Finale is still exhibiting the same behavior, close Finale and try removing some more unused plug-ins.

If the issue persists after following these steps, please contact Customer Success for further assistance.

  • Resolved: As of Finale v25.4.

Using the COMMAND+OPTION+SHIFT+[number row] shortcut in Simple Entry can cause Finale to crash.

One useful workaround is to actually change the keyboard shortcut set that you are using to the laptop keyboard shortcut set. If you are using an extended keyboard with a number pad, you don't have to change the shortcut set, you can use the number pad buttons (press 5 for quarter note, 4 for eighth note, etc.) to change note durations, rather than using the number row with modifier keys.

Changing Simple Entry's keyboard shortcut set

    Open any document in Finale.

    Select the Simple Entry tool.

Choose Simple > Simple Entry Options.

Click the Edit Keyboard Shortcuts button; the Edit Keyboard Shortcuts dialog box appears.

Choose the Laptop Shortcut Table option from the Select drop-down menu in the Keyboard Shortcut Set section.

Click OK; click OK again to return to your score.

Now you do not have to use the modifier keys to change note durations in Simple Entry, you can just use the number keys on the number row by themselves. What about adding intervals? The function keys (F1, F2, etc.) can do that now.

You can return to the Edit Keyboard Shortcut dialog box anytime to investigate the other shortcuts in the Laptop Shortcut Table, you can also find them listed here.

If the crashing persists, please feel free to contact Customer Success.

  • In documents that need to switch back and forth between swing and straight rhythms, you will need to create two expressions to trigger it on and off. Below are the steps to accomplish this in the most efficient way possible.

First, choose the Expression Tool and double-click the first swing measure to open the Expression Selection dialog box. You will need to choose a category that allows assignment of expressions to all staves, like the Miscellaneous category.

Once in the selected category, choose Create Misc Expression to open the Expression Designer dialog box. In the Text field, label this first expression Swing on or Moderate Swing or whatever terminology works best for your piece.

Select the Playback tab and choose Swing in the Type drop-down box.

In the Effect section, choose Set to Value. Select from the Standard Swing Values Again, whatever works best for your piece.

Click OK,thenclick the chevron next to Assign and choose Assign to All Staves.

Now there are as many Swing expressions on that measure as there are staves. To avoid cluttering your score, drag-select all expressions under the top staff with the Expression Tool still selected.

Press CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + H (Windows) or COMMAND + OPTION + SHIFT + H (Mac) to hide all of these expressions.

Repeat this process to create a Swing off expression. Just change the text to reflect no swing, and change the swing value to beNone.

  • Opening Sibelius files in Finale require one oftwo file conversion choices.

The first file conversion possibility is the Standard MIDI File. While this file format will definitely work to get the basic notation into Finale, it will not import any formatting, text, lyrics, or any other musical expressions or articulations that were in the Sibelius score. However, this method does not require any special plug-ins in either Finale or Sibelius to be able to saveor open MIDI files in either application.

The second file conversion choice is to use MusicXML. Unlike standard MIDI, MusicXML will be able to save a good deal of text, lyrics, music formatting, and other musical symbols. While this is not a 100% file conversion, it does bring over a much higher percentage of information compared to MIDI. WhileFinaleand Sibelius 7have support for Music XML Import/Export natively, previous versions of Sibelius required an additional plug-in to accomplish this.

In order to import Music XML files into Sibelius 6 or previous, users can download the Dolet 6 plug-in for Sibelius at no cost from the link below.

    http://www.musicxml.com/dolet-plugin/

Finale is able to both import and export MusicXML. To open a MusicXML file go to the File menu, and click Import > MusicXML. Finale users can also download and install the Dolet 6 plug-in at no cost from the link above.

  • (Windows and Mac)

Under specific circumstances, guitar TAB notation shows negative fret numbers when measures are copied from other instrument staves.

Standard guitar notation copies correctly to the TAB staff, but other instruments sporadically ignore the command to make 0 the lowest fret and place notes at negative values. These notes are technically correct values if negative values were possible. The notes translate correctly when moved to lower strings.

There are a number of ways to fix this. Here are two that we have found to be effective:

In Edit > Preferences > Edit (Mac: Finale(your version number) > Preferences > Edit) there is a preference that reads Respect instrument ranges when copying or changing instruments. If this preference is deselected, all staves will copy correctly into TAB staves from then on. Please note that this option is not available in PrintMusic.

If you have notation in place that you don't want to have to copy again, then you can manually adjust each note. Choose Simple Entry and Ctrl + click (Mac: Opt + click) one of the fret numbers. You can then use the up- and down-arrow keys to move between strings and out of negative numbers, and the left- and right-arrow keys to move between notes.

  • If you are unable to input chord symbols (using the Chord tool) via your MIDI keyboard, please note that this could be due to a specific MIDI message being sent from your MIDI keyboard that stops Finale from recognizing MIDI input properly.

The MIDI message is CC 88. high resolution velocity, and it can prevent Finale from processing input from your MIDI keyboard when inputting chord symbols. The following makes MIDI keyboards may be affected...

    Casio Privia

    Alesis

    CME

To test if this is the reason you are unable to input chord symbols, try using your MIDI keyboard to enter notes using either Simple Entry or Speedy Entry. Please make sure that Use MIDI Device for Inputis selected in either the Simple or Speedy menu, and that Allow MIDI Input is selected in the Chordwhen testing.

If note entry works with note entry tools and your MIDI keyboard, but chord symbol entry does not. You are most likely running into this problem. There is not currently a workaround for this issue; however, the issue has been reported as a program error.

If note entry is not working with your note entry tools, there may be a problem with MIDI connectivity. Please see this article for additional assistance.

  • Distorted sound from the ARIA Player can indicate that either the buffer settings or the output device need to be adjusted.

Adjust the audio device or driver.

Choose Tools > Preferences (Windows) or ARIA Player > Preferences (Mac).

Make sure that the correct device is selected from the Audio Device drop-down menu.

Windows only: From the Audio Device drop-down menu, select DirectSound (depending on your sound card, you may be able to use ASIO, MME or WASAPI).

For Mac users, make sure that you are using either CoreAudio or that you have your audio device selected and equipped with the latest drivers for this device and your OS X version.

Check your buffer settings in the ARIA Player.

ChooseTools > Preferences (Windows) or ARIA Player > Preferences (Mac).

Experiment with a different buffer size. This will vary depending on your computer's audio hardware, but generally, a larger buffer size results in a cleaner sound and a smaller buffer size results inlower latency.

If you are still experiencing noisy playback or if notes are not playing correctly, contact Customer Success.

  • In addition to the information in the user manual concerning HyperScribe recording ( look here for Windows | look here for Mac ), here are some quick tips to help when recording with HyperScribe.

Make sure that Finale is set to play through MIDI (MIDI/Audio > Play Finale Through MIDI). This option can be switched back to Play Finale Through VST (Windows) or Play Finale Through Audio Units (Mac) after recording with HyperScribe.

Make sure Human Playback is deactivated when recording with HyperScribe (MIDI/Audio > Human Playback > None). Human Playback can be reactivated after recording with HyperScribe.

If you are experiencing latency with MIDI input, try lowering your buffer size in Audio Setup (MIDI/Audio > Device Setup > Audio Setup) to help mitigate the latency.

Make sure that quantization settings are configured to accommodate the type of music you are recording (MIDI/Audio > Quantization Settings). Quantization settings can be complex, but as a general rule make sure that you have chosen the largest possible value of the Smallest Note Value options (this depends on what note durations you need to record). For more information on quantization settings, check out this user manual article for Windows or Mac.

  • When Finale launches, it will attempt to initialize the audio devices on your computer so it can use whichever device you choose for playback purposes.

This can sometimes cause a problem. If you suspect a particular device is causing crashes or freezing when starting Finale or when playing back a score, you can try disabling the device in Windows'sDevice Manager to test and see if eliminating that device helps.

Disabling audio devices with Device Manager

    Close Finale.

Hold down the WINDOWS key on your computer keyboard and press the letter R at the same time to open the Run dialog box.

    Type in:

    devmgmt.msc

    Click OK.

In the Device Manager window, expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.

To disable a device, right-click its name and choose Disable. Note: This enables the device for your computer as a whole while it is disabled. A device can be re-enabled from this window by right-clikcing it and choosing Enable.

Use step 6 to disable all but one device. Since audio hardware varies between computers, choose the most likely to work. Most computers utilize a Realtek or IDT sound card which would be a good choice.

    Relaunch Finale.

If disabling a particular audio device relieves the crashing or hanging problem, try reinstalling the latest audio driver available for that piece of hardware for your device and OS. You can usually find the latest hardware on the website of your system manufacturer.

  • In Finale, you may find that the volume of Percussion staves is too quiet when playing back your Finale document.

This is due to the default key velocity that is sent to the ARIA Player (this can vary depending on Human Playback's interpretation of your score). There are a few different ways to mitigate this problem. You can alter the overall key velocity of a percussion staff, put your percussion staves on their own bank and raise that bank's volume fader, or you can use SmartMusic SoftSynth instead of Garritan sounds for these staves.

    Manually editing key veolcity

To alter key velocity it is best that you first complete your piece and then alter the key velocity values for the whole staff using the MIDI tool.

You may wish to save another version of your file on which to try this change (File > Save As). To set a region of notes to a higher key velocity manually, you must first apply Human Playback. To do so, choose the MIDI tool (Tools > MIDI [Mac] or Tools > Advanced Tools > MIDI [Windows]), choose MIDI Tool> Apply Human Playback and Apply the Standard style (or whatever style you choose). You can then close the Apply Human Playback window and follow the steps below to manually edit key velocity...

Choose the MIDI tool(Tools > MIDI [Mac] or Tools > Advanced Tools > MIDI [Windows]).

Highlight a region of music by clicking a measure, holding down the SHIFT key on your computer keyboard and clicking the last measure of a region in the drum/percussion staff.

    ChooseMIDI Tool > Key Velocities.

    Choose MIDI Tool> Set To.

Type "100" (you can adjust this value according to what works best for you) into theSet Key Velocities To field that appears

    Click OK.

Using an independent bank for percussion volume

Another method that works to help with volume while you are working on your score is to put the Percussion/Drum staves on their own bank and raise the volume in the VST/AU Banks & Effects dialog box.

Open the Score Manager (Window > Score Manager); choose theInstrument List tab.

If you do not see a Bank column, choose Customize View > Bank & Channel.

Click in the Bank column for your Percussion/Drum instrument row and choose Next Available.

Choose the same bank number as the new bank number from step 3 for the Bank column for any additional Percussion/Drum staves.

Take note of this new bank number and close the Score Manager.

Choose MIDI/Audio > VST Banks & Effects (Windows) or MIDI/Audio > Audio Units Banks & Effects.

Raise the fader corresponding to the bank number for your Percussion instruments to raise the volume overall for just those staves.

    Using SmartMusic SoftSynth instead

You can also change the sound device for your Percussion/Drum staves to SmartMusic SoftSynth and avoid the issue altogether. You can change the audio device used for each staff in theDevicecolumn of the Score Manager's Instrument List (Window > Score Manager > Instrument List [tab]). You may wish to save another version of your file (File > Save As) on which to try this change; it could affect your score.

  • My score doesn't sound right

If your score doesn't sound like you expect it to, there is a chance that Human Playback, Finale's automatic playback processing/interpretation logic, is not doing exactly what you would like it to do.

While Human Playback does help enhance your score, there are situations where it may not work as expected. While it is the desire of our development team to improve Human Playback so that many of these gaps are closed as possible, they can still occur.

If you find yourself in this situation, it is best to view Human Playback's efforts to interpret your score as a jump start. Fortunately, Finale gives you the tools necessary to utilize the way Human Playback interprets your score and take it further.

    1. Apply Human Playback

The Apply Human Playback function (part of the MIDI tool menu) allows you to apply the MIDI data that Human Playback generates when playing back your score, and write it into the score. It then turns off Human Playback. This puts you in a great position to utilize the MIDI tool to edit your playback data (starting from where Human Playback left off) so you have control over playback's results.

For more details on finding and using this function, click here for Mac and here for Windows.

    2. The MIDI tool

Once you have applied your Human Playback data (let it help you as much as you can!), you can use the MIDI tool to edit the playback data in your score and gain control over Finale's playback of your score.

The functions in the MIDI tool are among the most complex in Finale. Taking the time to read through the documentation describing the purpose of these functions will help in their utilization: MIDI tool (Mac) || MIDI tool (Windows).

Use the remaining sections below to explore some examples on how to use the MIDI tool to enhance playback. At the end of the day (or article I guess) not every circumstance will be covered, so familiarizing yourself with the MIDI tool and utilizing it to meet your score's needs will be most helpful in the long run!

Note: Don't start editing the sound of your score, until you have finished adding all the notes and markings into you score. Beginning the process of editing audio should be last per best practice. Save yourself some frustration and wait until you have your music entered before applying Human Playback and editing MIDI data.

One more note: Before diving into the world of Human Playback and MIDI - If you have a favorite DAW, Digital Audio Workstation, (like Logic, Pro Tools, etc.) Finale makes it easy to export your score as a MIDI file to use in your DAW. It is often easier to control playback output in a digital audio workstation, so leveraging this capability to enhance your workflow is wise.

Here is a user manual article on exporting MIDI files. I would recommend applying Human Playback first then exporting your file as MIDI: To export a MIDI File ( Mac || Windows ).

You can also use ReWire to slave Finale to a DAW for audio production purposes: ReWire ( Mac || Windows ).

    Editing instrument volume (MIDI Tool)

If you find that parts of your score are too soft or too loud even with specific dynamic markings in place, you don't want to change the dynamic markings themselves; that could cause other parts of your score to have the incorrect volume. Instead, Apply Human Playback (select the MIDI tool | choose MIDI tool > Apply Human Playback) and use the MIDI tool to edit either the key velocity or CC#1 Mod wheel data.

Which MIDI data, key velocity or CC#1, doI edit? I'm glad you asked. When using the Garritan Instruments for Finale, any sustaining instruments (French Horn, Oboe, Violin, etc.) will utilize CC#1 Modulation or MOD Wheel data for playback volume; any struck instruments (Piano, Drums, etc.) will use key velocity.

After applying Human Playback, select the MIDI tool (Tools > Advanced Tools > MIDI (Windows) or Tools > MIDI (Mac)).

Using the MIDI tool, select the region of music you wish to edit.

Choose MIDI Tool > Edit Key Velocity (or Key Velocity for Mac) for struck instruments.

For sustaining instruments choose MIDI Tool > Edit Continuous Data (or Continuous Data for Mac). In the View Continuous Data dialog box that appears, choose 1: Modulation from the Controller drop-down menu then clickOK.

Return to the MIDI Tool menu and choose Set To.

In the Set To dialog box that appears type a value between 0 and 127 (the lowest and highest MIDI values respectively) to set the Key Velocity or CC#1 data in the region you've selected to that value.

    Click OK.

Test playback. You may have to experiment with these values to see what works best, so repeat the steps above as is necessary.

For third party VST/AU libraries, reference their documentation to see which MIDI data is appropriate to edit for their instrument types. Once you know that information, you can use the MIDI tool to edit the appropriate MIDI data.

Help with percussion volume (MIDI Tool)

When using the Garritan Instruments libraries, you may find that the volume of a percussion staff is too low. This is due to the default key velocity used for percussion/drum staff instruments. If you select the whole staff and use the MIDI tool to raise the key velocity of the staff as a whole, you can mitigate this issue.

After applying Human Playback, select the MIDI tool (Tools > Advanced Tools > MIDI (Windows) or Tools > MIDI (Mac)).

Using the MIDI tool, highlight the entire percussion staff. An easy way to do this is to click to the left of the staff between the staff name and the staff's leftmost barline.

Choose MIDI Tool > Edit Key Velocity (or Key Velocity for Mac).

Choose MIDI Tool > Set To.

In the Set To dialog box that appears, type in a value between 0 and 127 (the MIDI value range). I would recommend starting somewhere around 100, this could take some experimentation if it is too loud or still too soft.

    Click OK.

After raising the overall value of the percussion staff or staves, you can then use the same procedure to raise or lower selected regions of your percussion staff depending on what is appropriate.

    Editing tempo (MIDI Tool)

It is best for tempo to be set using a tempo mark expression. For more information, check out this user manual article for Windows and this one for Mac.

However, if Human Playback is not interpreting your score at the correct tempo, Apply Human Playback, and then use the MIDI tool to edit the tempo of the incorrect sections.

After applying Human Playback, select the MIDI tool (Tools > Advanced Tools > MIDI (Windows) or Tools > MIDI (Mac)).

Choose MIDI Tool > Edit Tempo (or Tempo on Mac).

In the Set To dialog box that appears type in the tempo value that you wish. It uses the beat duration of the time signature for a section, so typing in 120 when a 4/4 section is highlighted means [quarter note] = 120 BPM.

    Click OK.

Manually defining accel. and rit. (MIDI Tool)

If you would like to manually control the linear flow of an accelrando or ritardando, you can do so using the Edit Tempo and Scale functions of the MIDI Tool.

After applying Human Playback, select the MIDI tool (Tools > Advanced Tools > MIDI (Windows) or Tools > MIDI (Mac)).

Choose MIDI Tool > Edit Tempo (or Tempo on Mac).

    Choose MIDI Tool > Scale.

In the Scale dialog box that appears, type what BPM (beats per minute) value you would like the selected region to begin at into the From field, and the tempo you wish the region to end at into the To field. I usually leave the In Increments value at "1".

    Click OK.

You may have to experiment with the values to get the correct beginning and ending tempos, so feel free to repeat the steps above and experiment as needed.

    Editing note duration (MIDI Tool)

This function can be exceedingly granular, but if Finale's automatic interpretation of your score has too much or not enough of one or a few notes's duration(s), then using this function will allow you to edit those durations note by note.

After applying Human Playback, select the MIDI tool (Tools > Advanced Tools > MIDI (Windows) or Tools > MIDI (Mac)).

Choose MIDI Tool > Edit Note Durations (or Note Durations for Mac).

Double-click on a staff to open the MIDI editing split view (Windows) or the MIDI Tool dialog box (Mac).

Handles appear on the notes either in the staff directly below split-view (Windows) or in the lower window of the MIDI Tool dialog box (Mac). Double-click on one of the handles to open the Edit MIDI Note dialog box.

Add in EDU values (more details on EDUs: Mac || Windows ) to the Start time and/or Stop time field(s) to alter the duration of the selected note.

Note: On Windows, you can scroll up and down the page to move a staff below the split-view pane and cause handles to appear on other staves (depicted below). On Mac, simply use the four arrow buttons in the bottom, left-hand corner of the MIDI Tool dialog box to move between staves and measures.

Keyswitches/Using third party libraries with human playback

This process may take some experimenting to get the right duration, so please feel free to repeat the steps as much as is necessary!

Pizz/arco and problems with other keyswitches

Sometimes, Human Playback will have problems processing markings to send keyswitch data. This can be caused by any number of factors and is not always the easiest thing to nail down. So, rather than moving around markings in your score trying to get HP to interpret them correctly, let's alter the expressions to send the MIDI data that you need.

A classic example of this scenario is pizz. and arco expressions. We can alter the expressions already in the score so they provide manual MIDI data to Human Playback and help it in its task of automated playback processing.

Open your score (these changes are document specific).

    Choose the Expression tool.

Double-click on the handle of one of your "pizz." markings to open the Expression Selection dialog box.

The "pizz." expression should be highlighted, so click the Edit button to open the Expression Designer dialog box.

    Choose the Playback tab.

Choose Dump from the Type drop-down menu.

There are four fields in the Playback Data Dump dialog box that appears. Type in the following four values from top to bottom to manually define pizzicato keyswitch data.

    3

    144

    5

    127

Click OK to close the Playback Data Dump dialog box.

Click OK again to close the Expression Designer dialog box.

Click Assign to close the Expression Selection dialog box.

Repeat steps 2 - 10 for the "arco" expression in your score, but use these values for step 7 instead.

    3

    144

    0

    127

You can now playback your file.

These values will help Human Playback know what keyswitch data to send. You can save this library of expressions (File > Save Library) to load into other documents for later use (File > Load Library).

If you would like a further explanation of these values that we used to define the expression, or to get a general sense of how to create such manual keyswitch data expressions, please check out this user manual article: Playback Data Dump dialog box ( Mac || Windows ).

    Sending additionalcontroller messages

You can use the Apply Human Playback function and the MIDI tool to send additional controller messages. For a list of some common controller messages and more details, check out this user manual article for Windows and this one for Mac.

To send controller messages, first apply Human Playback which will write HP data into your score and turn off Human Playback. Then, use the MIDI tool to send controller data. You can choose to edit continuous data by choosing the MIDI tool (Tools > Advanced Tools > MIDI (Windows) or Tools > MIDI (Mac)), and then choosing MIDI Tool > Edit Continuous Data (Windows) or MIDI Tool > Continuous Data (Mac).

The View Continuous Data dialog box appears, you can then choose the controller data you wish to edit from the Controller drop-down menu. You can also edit Patch Changes, Channel Pressure, and Pitch Wheel data.

After you have selected the type of MIDI data you wish to edit (continuous data in this case), highlight the region of music you wish to affect and then choose MIDI Tool > Set To. Edit the values in the Set To dialog box that appears to edit your controller data; click OK to apply the change to the selected region of music.

As with most changes done with the MIDI tool, this could take some trial and error. Please feel free to repeat the steps above as needed until you land at the desired result.

Human Playback, Finale's automated playback processing function, is designed to work with the Garritan Instrument libraries. If playback through your third party VST/AU sound library is not working as you would expect, you can Apply Human Playback to write HP's playback data to your score and turn Human Playback off. After doing so, you can use the functions of the MIDI tool to edit the playback data in your score to send the correct information to your third party VST/AU library for improved playback results.

Using third party libraries with Finale can be a bit challenging at first, but don't worry. Most VST/AU sound libraries have their own set of documentation that tells you exactly what MIDI data needs to be edited to control certain aspects of playback. Once you have that information, you can use the MIDI tool's functions to edit the playback data in your score.

After this installer is done, run and complete the full Finale installer.

The current version of the Finale installer for Mac (for 2012 and later) can be downloaded from your MakeMusic account.

After the Finale installer completes, restart your computer.

Launch Finale and test playback in a new document with the Setup Wizard (File > New > Document With Setup Wizard). You can confirm that the ARIA Player is being utilized by checking if it is loaded in MIDI/Audio > Audio Units Banks & Effects.

Once you have completed this workaround, Finale should be playing back using the Garritan Instruments for Finale and no further action is required.

If the ARIA Player is still not working after following these steps, please contact Customer Success.

  • Note: This article pertains to changes to the Garritan Instruments for Finale installation that concern Mac users only. Finale will install the Garritan Instruments for Finale by default as part of its installer package. If you are having trouble with the Garritan Instruments for Finale library, check out this article to try reinstalling the Garritan Instruments for Finale library.

In the latest version of Finale, Version 25, the Garritan Instrument for Finale samples will install in the /Users/Shared directory, rather than the applications folder like it did in the past.

If you would like to remove the older Garritan Instruments for Finale samples, you can remove them (if they are in their previous default location), by deleting the "GIFF_Samples" folder in the "Garritan Instruments for Finale" in your Mac's Applications folder. Do not delete the "Garritan Instruments for Finale" folder or any of the other components besides the GIFF_Samples folder and its contents.

Your previous versions of Finale will be using the new samples installed to the /User/Shared directory, so deleting the old samples/components should not affect previous versions.

For any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Customer Success.

  • There is a known issue with SMPX export from Finale 2014.5 on Mac that causes about 20 seconds (time varies) of silence prior to beginning playback of the file in SmartMusic. Our Developers are aware of this issue and will be working to fix it for future versions of the program. There is a workaround for the issue that can be used for the time being...

Open the original Finale file in Finale 2014.5.

    Click MIDI/Audio > Human Playback > None.

    Click the MIDI Tool.

Click MIDI Tool > Apply Human Playback.

Select the Style you would like to define and click Apply.

    Click Close.

Export the file to SMPX (File > Export > SmartMusic.)

This should create a normal SMPX file with all the Human Playback settings applied to the file, but without the errant silence.

  • The most common cause of this crash is a particular configuration of MIDI settings that interact poorly with one another.

Namely if you have a file that...

Is set to play through MIDI (MIDI/Audio > Play Finale Through MIDI).

You are playing back through a MIDI System. In other words the MIDI System option is selected from the Playback To drop-down menu in MIDI Setup (MIDI/Audio > Device Setup > MIDI/Internal Speaker Setup).

You have MIDI Thru (MIDI/Audio > Device Setup > MIDI Thru) set toOff.

If you have this type of MIDI configuration and start using Simple Entry you will eventually receive the error depicted below:

After this error the program will most likely begin crashing anytime you try to access a document that is set to play through MIDI.

The best way to resolve this is to create a new document with the Setup Wizard (File > New > Document With Setup Wizard) which plays through Audio Units by default, and then choose another option for MIDI Thru (MIDI/Audio>Device Setup >MIDI Thru). In most cases, choosing theFixed Channeloption and choosing a channel well out of the range of your keyboards configured bank (128 is the maximum) should prevent any adverse effects with MIDI Thru.

Our development team has been made aware of the issue. If you would like to be updated on this issue as more information becomes available, click theFollow button at the bottom of this article.
