Q&A With Dell EMC Employees

Asked to all employees at Dell EMC

  • It differs for everyone, but is encouraged by the company. If that is something important to you, provided your performance meets the requirements of your job and your expectations, you will have no problem balancing work and personal.

  • They allow employees to work remotely 2 days a week, provided the individual is in good standing and performance does not suffer working away from the office. It is a work-hard, play-hard mentality. They respect their employees.

  • It's not great. You are expected to work even on vacation. Most of us do.

They talk about "going big" and "winning big" when it comes to our work, but they turn around and talk about having comparable benefits and compensation to the industry average. Why can working at Dell EMC be as good as working for the Googles or the Facebooks of the world?

  • There is big difference in pay scale compared to other large tech companies. (Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc.) Up double below industry pay in some cases for doing similar jobs.

  • In my opinion, I am not sure I would make too many. If there is one, I would be more strict on who and when people can work from home. If you reduce the amount of time people actually interact with each other, it is difficult to have a sustained culture.

I have a lot of flexibility and authority to work on problems the way I think best. There's not a lot of direction about the way we have to do things.

  • I am excited that the Dell EMC merger offers up the only company who can truly fulfill the entire "IT Stack". By that I mean, we have infrastructure of Servers, Storage, Networking while offering integration of both proprietary and open source software of VMware, Pivotal, RSA, Secureworks, virtustream and many others. This allows us to be the only company that can solve any on or off premise solution like public or private clouds, while offering the capability to write next generation apps.

  • New technology

  • Overall, they have a very positive impression for the CEO. The simulation between the Dell and EMC employees took some time, but the majority believe it is getting there. It is a huge company with over 100,000 employees, so there are always going to be ups and downs. With that being said, it is a fantastic company and is a great place to work.

  • I don't hear people talking about him much.

  • Michael Dell is not seen as a strategic player - nor is he really seen as being in touch with the customer.

No and no. EMC is fully aware that while there is competition the quality of their products and their "Value Add" are far supiorior to similar companies.

  • There is always discussion about competitive aspects, but in no way is the company worried. Dell and EMC combined with the family of Vmware, Pivotal, Virtustream, RSA, and the others combined with a strong governance for R&D organic and acquisition allows us to be ready for most technological disruptions.

  • We are pretty secure here competition wise

Depends on where you work. In the main offices you will find that it's common to hang out regularly. Telework is encouraged and that does affect your social interactions, but personally I am a remote worker, but when we go to offices for training or meetings, many us go out on social interactions. The internal chat tools like Skype and Slack allow a continual interaction with co-workers.

  • Some do that live local to each other.

Very pro-employee. Everyone in my department, Microsoft Practice [Washington, DC] got along really well. Dress was business casual [Khakis and Polo Shirt].

  • Since the Dell EMC merger, management is heavily pushing the #culturecode. What that means is that we have shared values of Customers First + Winning together + innovation + results + integrity, and is "activated" by setting expectations for How we work + How we lead. So managers do have some pressure to be a better leader via Net Promoter Scores for employees called the eNPS through the "TellDell" surveys. The downside is that I have yet to see any actual changes from the November and February surveys, but they sure do talk about it plenty. What you will experience depends primarily on where in the company you will work. Sales and Pre-Sales engineering are high pressure get the sale, internal product engineering is more of typical get the products out the door, and other groups are more of a plod along.
