Depends on the team but usually intense.
What does the ideal candidate in the Engineering department look like at SAS?
It varies widely from Physics majors who know assembly language and C well to PhD's in applied math and everything in between. SAS has an amazing diversity of talent.
What kind of interview questions do they ask when hiring someone in the Engineering department at SAS?
It varies depending on the team. The advanced analytics teams ask lots of hard grad-level math questions. You need to know the area you are interviewing for well. SAS R&D has a lot of legacy technology that was built by some of the top OS-level, database internals and Compiler design devs. If you interview for one of those positions you'd better know machine architecture, C, OS internals, etc. and have a solid grasp on data structures and algorithms.
What kind of people succeed at SAS?
For the most part those who very smart and work much harder than the advertised 35-hour week.

The vibe varies across teams. I average 45 intense hours per week which is 10 more than the standard SAS workweek of 35.

SAS R&D is HUGE, comprising many teams spanning 4 continents. The largest R&D center is at SAS HQ in Cary, NC. There are many leaders — many fantastic, some less so.
