Executive Bio

Dr. Harold L. Paz, M.D., M.S. has been the Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President of Aetna Inc since July 28, 2014. Dr. Paz has been Senior Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean of Pennsylvania State University College Of Medicine since April 2006. Dr. Paz served as the Chief Executive Officer of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center since April 2006. He has spearheaded the creation of the Penn State Hershey Rehabilitation Hospital, the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute and the over 620 physician Penn State Hershey Medical Group. He has overseen a major one-half million square foot expansion of the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center campus that includes five new patient care, research and education buildings including the new Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute. During his tenure at Penn State, he has initiated the formation of the Penn State Hershey Health System. He initiated the formation of Penn State Hershey Health System, which includes four hospitals, an ambulatory surgery center, an endoscopy center and 18 affiliated hospitals. Dr. Paz spearheaded the creation of Penn State Hershey Rehabilitation Hospital, a joint venture with Select Medical and the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute-an inpatient and outpatient behavioral collaboration between Penn State Hershey and Pinnacle Health System. He led the negotiations between Penn State Hershey and Pinnacle Health toward the formation of a new integrated healthcare enterprise across central Pennsylvania. He also guided the creation of a new regional medical campus in State College, Pennsylvania, highlighted by four new outpatient clinical sites, new joint degree programs between the College of Medicine and other Penn State colleges and a new family medicine residency program in collaboration with Mount Nittany Medical Center. Dr. Paz was recruited to Philadelphia and served as Director of the medical intensive care units at Hahnemann University eventually becoming Associate Dean and Associate Hospital Medical Director. Dr. Paz has nearly 25 years of experience in the healthcare and insurance industries. He has been a Director of United Surgical Partners International Inc. since February 11, 2014. He has been a Director of Select Medical Holdings Corporation since March 1, 2017. He serves as Director at Life Sciences Greenhouse of Central Pennsylvania. Dr. Paz served as a Director of Vyteris Inc. He is a Member of the Administrative Board of the Council of Deans of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and has served on the Executive Council of the AAMC. Dr. Paz was the Dean of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and the Chief Executive Officer of the Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Group. He completed his internship and residency at Northwestern University, where Dr. Paz served as Chief Medical Resident and instructor in clinical medicine. He served as Trustee of the Dorothy Rider Pool Health Care Trust and has served on Corporate and Scientific Advisory Boards in the biotechnology field. Dr. Paz is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Sir William Osler Humanitarian Award from the American Lung Association of New Jersey and the New Jersey Thoracic Society, the Alumni Merit Award from the Northwestern University Alumni Association and the Honorary Alumni Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Alumni Association. A member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, he is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians and Board certified in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine. Dr. Paz was a fellow in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical School, where he was a Eudowood Fellow. In addition, he was a post-doctoral fellow in environmental health science at Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. Dr. Paz received M.D. from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. His academic programs established during his administration included a physician's assistant master's program, a fully-accredited graduate program in public health and new doctoral and dual degree programs. He holds an M.S. in life science engineering from Tufts University and B.A. in biology and psychology from the University of Rochester.
