How long have u been working there? U like it?
Over the last 3 years BMC has lost the plot, u less things change it won’t last another 3
14 years. It's management and process heavy, but overall, yes, a good place to work.
5 years. Some of the changes that have been made in the last few months have not made it a great place to be anymore.
Do you have team outings? are they fun?
From time to time, yes. Are they fun? Hell yes!
sometimes we have team outings most of the time it is dinner
sometimes and sometimes
What's the work from home policy like at BMC Software?
Some places good others management is not comfortable letting go of control, anyone say micromanagement
Work from home is the norm
How secure do you feel at your job at BMC Software?
Very. There is huge opportunity here for people with drive and ability.
Security is not one of the aspects of a position at BMC. Yes, it is a flexible, fun and respectful environment but the cost cutting and layoffs have gone to the extreme.
How's the vacation policy at BMC Software?
5 weeks of vacation after 10 years. Starting vacation is 2 weeks (you then progress to 3, 4 and finally 5 weeks; don't recall the details but if may have been 3 weeks @ 2 years, 4 weeks @ 5 years and 5 weeks @ 10 years).
Comparable to other tech companies I've worked for or know of. 2-3 weeks at sign on, accrues over the year, expands with tenure.
How much freedom do you have with your roadmap?
Not a ton, BMC is process heavy, so there's a specific way to do almost everything.
have a lot of freedom as long s it fits the strategy
Do u take work home?
I work *from* home, so.... yeah.
I work from home
Are your sales goals realistic or does it seem like you’re set up for failure?
Top Employee Response
I think they underestimated our ability to sell this fiscal year (don't tell them).
It's a mix. About 50% of the time they're easily achievable, the other 50% it's clear they're unrealistic as the 1st quarter progresses.
How easy (or hard) is it to sell the product? length of sales cycle?
I don't think it's difficult to sell the product. Sales cycle has varied wildly and lengthened the last few years: 45-180 days+; I'd say 90 days on average.
Sales cycle varies wildly for the relatively simply product I work with. Typical is probably in the 30-60 day range. I don't view it as a difficult product to sell.
do you feel like you can impact the direction of the product?
Yes, absolutely.
sometimes
how’s your relationship with the engineering team? collaborative?
Agile employed, so very collaborative.
pretty good
do you wish your comp was weighted more or less on commission?
Depends on that fiscal year's quota! I'm okay with more commission than salary overall.
More. We're making our number, blowing it up, in fact. Plus, I have confidence in our team.
Does BMC Software have a volunteer program?
Yes, it is called BMC Cares and there are various activities and support groups to choose from.
What should I wear for an interview at BMC Software?
Dress to impress! Be professional - this advice holds for any interview.
How would you compare interviewing at BMC Software to other places you've interviewed?
Comparable. Vetted by hiring manager, VP of BU, peer group and other stakeholders.
What's the IT team like at BMC Software?
Great team and very supportive, mostly on the staff level.
How's the leadership on the IT team at BMC Software?
Overall, good but there are issues with favoritism and politics, like most companies.
What are you most excited about working at BMC Software?
The mystery of what the future may bring.
What's the office vibe like at BMC Software?
Casual, fun. Lots of "type-A" personality, but folks who are more low-key aren't left out. Team atmosphere is excellent.
What interview questions does BMC Software ask?
The usual, plus more free-form questions designed to determine whether you'll be a fit culturally with the team.
What's the interview process like at BMC Software?
Collaborative (it was for me). Two managers and their manager, plus multiple potential team members interview over several hours.
What part of BMC Software's business is growing fastest? What part is having difficulties?
Mainframe and cloud management appear to be doing really well, other product lines not so much. Lower tier, mid-market products are fighting for life.
If you could make changes, how would you improve the culture at BMC Software?
A little less management (as a style and the sheer numbers of folks with "VP" and "Director" in their title) and a little less blind process and more "seat of the pants aggressive prospecting and selling".
What do people at BMC Software think about the CEO? What do they do well and what can they improve?
He's new, so I'm not sure. Several key folks in very high positions left in the first 90 days, a couple very suddenly, so he clearly has a direction in mind and isn't afraid to make immediate, big decisions.
How's the work life balance at BMC Software?
Pretty good. Time spent working is very flexible.
