Q&A With FM Global Employees

  • Formal business as if you were meeting an important client as a representative. Don't chicken out if you don't have it or can't afford it yet. Casual business attire is most common in the office so you will look perfectly in place in clean, ironed clothes. No t-shirts, hoodies, sneakers. If you can't get nice slacks yet, wear your best jeans that fit normally (not jeggings, no rips, no exposed skin or undies) and wear a nice button down shirt or blouse, not the style of nice shirt for clubbing. Don't you dare skip an interview over clothes! Show up in clean clothes, clean self, brushed, deodorant and don't think about it again. Nerves about the outfit will ruin the fun of meeting new people and showing your talent and personality.

  • Suit and tie

  • Business casual if not seeing outside clients. Nice condition jeans with no holes or fringe, and some sneakers allowed but not hoodies, tshirts, flip flops. Careful with uncovered shoulders - spaghetti straps are no no, wide straps ok but most people will have another layer available due to air conditioner which can also be put on if feeling too exposed outside their office or cubicle. No shorts. Dress for the day - look great when representing.

  • Usually an annual merit raise and sometimes a nice bump up from 1 level to another within the same position. This has happened to me a few times in different positions and they were so thoughtful to give the promotion first so that the merit raise % was calculated against the new, higher pay rate.

  • Both parents are entitled to parental leave. There may be special rules if both parents work for the company. Mom may end up with more time off due to medical leave for necessary physical recovery but that's different than parental leave. There was no such thing when I was having kids so 6 weeks medical was the usual time the doctor gave when mom was recovering normally and then you're back to work. Also, medical leave wasn't available for handling health issues with the new baby. We had to juggle surgeries and complications with infants and attempt to work. We couldn't use a sick day to care for a sick child, you were expected to have backup. Who wants to come babysit only on days a kid is sick? So of course most parents lied about being sick out of necessity. I'm so happy these policies have changed even though I'm jealous.

  • A bit hectic but valuable. Potentially will be rotated quickly through multiple teams to get a high level overview of what the work is like and potentially put on an easy to learn but tedious task by a team in need of the extra help. This is not a bad thing, especially if you learn that is not the particular job you could stand for a year. Managers will ensure some time is spent with the staff under them, which means you'll have time for candid conversation about the job, team, company from a person who would love you to join but isn't trying to recruit you with visions of only sunshine and roses. Cafe food is yummy and the campus is a nice place to walk or sit outside for a break. Driving out on lunch break isn't worth the traffic frustration unless it's a long break. Going 4 miles round trip to get a sandwich potentially takes 30 minutes. Morning and evening commute traffic is more reasonable/less chaos than the silly lunchtime traffic.

  • Apply! You're in demand. Don't be overly worried about which specialty is open, take the job because the company is great at moving people around the organization and this results in eventually landing where you wanted to be or landing somewhere that you never knew you wanted to be, but do now. Moving around the company makes you very valuable, it crams your head with the knowledge needed to keep separate departments in synergy. IT has their own language, Underwriting has theirs, engineering, research, etc. Move between these areas and your holistic knowledge will be in demand. Plus, you'll become connected with and trusted by so many people who will learn they can ask you almost anything and become a candidate for your favorite job or a management position if that's your aspiration.

  • Based on my colleagues, all kinds! I work with introverts, extroverts, serious types, jokesters, young and old. The most common trait I've found is kindness, even the grouches are just grouches, not unkind. Best thing about grouches is they let you get work done and they let you have a grouchy day too without the attention everyone else pays. There's a variety ethnicities, LGBTQ, lots of women. It's not just a straight white men's club. The fiversity seems reflective of the surrounding population and the interest in the industry. I think more minorities will become interested as today's minority employees talk to their families about their job. What kid dreams of being an underwriter? Like so many many others, I learned of the company through relatives and that's bound to continue. Today's underrepresented groups will grow as today's employees introduce their contacts to the existence of the thrilling world of property insurance and the joys of cubicles.

  • I've never seen a policy on pets (it could exist) and have never seen a pet in the office. I assume accommodations would made for service animals but have doubts about emotional support animals.

  • Two things are very important to succeeding (advancing) at FM Global: 1. Who you know. 2. Being in the right place at the right time. Being a female also helps, as there is a major push to promote women. Ultimately, skills, knowledge and performance are minor contributors to success. Just need to be good enough to get by.
