Q&A With HubSpot Employees
HubSpot employees answer questions about what life is like behind the scenes at their company, including queries about culture, leadership, professional development, and compensation.
How employees describe working at HubSpot
HubSpot has been a great company to work for. I'm worried about the growth a bit as I think some decisions we're making are still geared towards a smaller company and I fear won't help us scale.
Review from HR Dept
HubSpot has high standards and it's fast paced, so it's not for someone who wants to coast. But the environment is exciting, the people are incredibly smart, and the company truly values it's employees. It's a really fantastic place to work.
Review from Customer Support Dept
HubSpot is by far the best company I've worked for. Between work/life balance and the real impact we have on customers, I can't see myself working elsewhere anytime soon.
Review from Product Dept
HubSpot is an exciting company to be at, and a wonderful place to grow and learn.
Review from Product Dept
I've been here for a decade for a reason :)

What's the Engineering team like at HubSpot?
Excellent - very talented engineers
Smart people with poor middle management
Very fun, smart group of people.
How's the work pace at HubSpot?
Suits my workflow perfectly.
It isn’t fast paced
Brisk.
How's the leadership on the IT team at HubSpot?
Strong, I feel like we're considered a first class citizen among the company, and not an afterthought.
They shield us from distractions and leave us alone as long as we accomplish what they ask us to do and what we decide to do.
Focused on goals, respectable, accountable
What's the vibe like in the Engineering dept at HubSpot? How many hours are you working?
The vibe is great. I work with an amazing team. There is a decent work life balance
I have so much flexibility in my work - it's awesome. I can work from home when I want, and I don't feel pressure to work more than I feel like I should.
The vibe is good, people are engaged with their work but it's not a death march. Some projects with high visibility encourage a lot of work, but it's always temporary. People have the space to pace themselves how they need. On the other hand, I feel like if someone decides to put in a lot of effort that will be appreciated and help them.
How's the morale at HubSpot?
It's generally high -- and leadership places a LOT of importance on things like: - Internal employee surveys - An entire team dedicated to Culture - A "Culture Code", built early-on, now emulated by many other companies.
Good, but it depends on department overall.
Great, positive. People want to be here.
What's the HR team like at HubSpot?
Excellent
They're all ready great people who care about how are employees globally are. We have HR business partners in each of our major geographic areas and they're available at any time to talk about career growth, compensation, issues, etc. TLDR, kind and professional folks.
There are a few parts to the team. L&D, Recruitment, Culture and Core HR. Everyone helps everyone out; I would like to see more cross collaboration.
How's the vacation policy at HubSpot?
Sounds great, but in practice the "unlimited" vacation policy just means that you work during your vacations. Also, no compensation for unused vacation days.
Unlimited vacation while using good judgement. You are allowed to take off as many days as you need throughout the year. Communicate to your team
We have an unlimited vacation policy, which means that we don't have any formal process for taking time off. While you don't need any approvals from HR or your manager, we do trust that employees "Use Good Judgment," which is basically our only rule. As long as you're getting your work done and communicating with your manager and team about your plans, this is a very flexible work environment.
do you like the projects you work on or are they boring?
Very exciting projects -- it sounds cliche, but I'm learning something totally new every day.
I love the projects I work on.
The projects are challenging, but way cool.
What’s the typical comp structure in biz dev?
$35K Salary, $15k-ish for on-target commission.
Hi There -- for BDRs, it's a combination of base + on-target earnings. At a high-level, BDR OTE is based on meetings booked/delivered + closed deals that can be attributed to those bookings.
Base + bonus + stock equity.
What are the remote work policies at Hubspot? Who gets to work remote and how are they managed? Does the company have any required software for remote workers? How is your schedule managed?
Though we have a few remote workers, generally, we currently favor having the team in Cambridge, MA (HubSpot headquarters) or one of the other offices. But, it somewhat depends on the role and the situation.
Anyone can work remotely from anywhere, at any time. Your company issued computer has all the required software. You can work with your manager regarding schedule, but in most positions at HubSpot, it's results, not time spent at the office, that matters.
How do I do well in an interview at HubSpot?
Be honest, slow down, take a breath -- and be able to express why you want this. If you need to take a minute to think of an answer, go ahead and ask the interview -- not a problem.
PREPARE. And relax. It's an interview, but it can be conversational.
How long do the interviews usually take at HubSpot?
30 minutes. Per person.
Usually 4 hours.
How would you describe your overall experience interviewing at HubSpot?
Excellent. They give a great tour and genuinely want to feel your interest for the job and get to know you. Each interview is different and you can learn as you go about the role.
Poor. Inexperience pervades the manager and recruiter groups, and candidates are generally treated like crap.
What's the Sales team like at HubSpot?
Successful
7/10 it is great, though there does seem to be some general bias to certain teams
What's the interview process like at HubSpot?
Lots of wasted time. The major "filters" are applied during the first (resume) and final (roleplay) stages of the application process only. It's pretty rare that someone isn't pushed forward in the multiple phone call, in-person interviews stages.
I'm a hiring manager and to be honest we want people who aren't a fit to talk to their friends about how the experience is great. Everything else stems from that.
What's the best part of your job at HubSpot?
My coworkers are all inspirational. And crazy smart. And humble.
I like our mission
How's the leadership on the Sales team at HubSpot?
Strong
It's streamlined, effective, but at times removed from the day-to-day of front lines
What's the vibe like in the Customer Support dept at HubSpot? How many hours are you working?
HubSpot (EMEA) does not work on a shift basis. All team members work 9-5 Mon-Fri, with a lunch hour and off-phone hour for personal development.
It’s a really great, unique group of people. Everyone is social (even if only a little bit), young, and wanting to help others out. Currently I spend like 50 hours a week in the office, but most people do 40-45!
How secure do you feel at your job at HubSpot?
If I were in sales ... not very. All other roles are very transparent / entail frequent feedback.
Somewhat secure.
What's the vibe like in the Marketing dept at HubSpot? How many hours are you working?
~ 50 hours / week
Silent. People are either in meetings, wfh or sitting somewhere else so it's always really quiet. I usually work 8 hours of the day, but those hours are sometimes scattered rather than straight through. Easier to work that way.
What's the Marketing team like at HubSpot?
Quiet, closed off and to themselves. I wish people on the team were a bit more welcoming/open to everyone else. It seems like people are very much in their own 'friend' bubble.
Full of smart, motivated people who really care about pushing marketing forward. Everyone freely shares ideas and is willing to help. If you're coming from a company where Marketing doesn't get the respect it deserves, find a way to get to HubSpot. It feels like Marketing is an equal peer with Sales, Product and Engineering.
How's the leadership on the Engineering team at HubSpot?
Excellent. Fantastic technical and people skills
Engineering leadership is really great. The people are smart and they really care about building a good, happy, high-performing team.
What's one thing you wish you'd known before joining HubSpot?
The pay is competitive, it's average. HubSpot's pay needs to be more competitive with other tech companies joining Boston.
The 15 pounds one puts on due to free food.
What's the pay like for IT roles at HubSpot?
It really depends on the role. Sometimes, they pay top dollar, others they're a bit below market. From what I've been able to understand, it really depends on one's willingness to negotiate a salary.
10-20% below market. So, good pay, not great.
What's the vibe like in the IT dept at HubSpot? How many hours are you working?
Little downtrodden. Work 35-40/week. Sometimes very fun, but the sparks not there right now. I think it might be the changing of the seasons.
50 hour weeks
