Q&A With HubSpot Employees
HubSpot employees answer questions about what life is like behind the scenes at their company, including queries about culture, leadership, professional development, and compensation.
How employees describe working at HubSpot
HubSpot has been a great company to work for. I'm worried about the growth a bit as I think some decisions we're making are still geared towards a smaller company and I fear won't help us scale.
Review from HR Dept
HubSpot has high standards and it's fast paced, so it's not for someone who wants to coast. But the environment is exciting, the people are incredibly smart, and the company truly values it's employees. It's a really fantastic place to work.
Review from Customer Support Dept
HubSpot is by far the best company I've worked for. Between work/life balance and the real impact we have on customers, I can't see myself working elsewhere anytime soon.
Review from Product Dept
HubSpot is an exciting company to be at, and a wonderful place to grow and learn.
Review from Product Dept
I've been here for a decade for a reason :)

Do u take work home?
Top Employee Response
Yes.
I can't speak for all positions but in Customer Support, absolutely not. Personally this seems like something you have to learn on your own and be comfortable leaving work at work. You do not need to bring work home unless you want to. I don't personally know any coworkers that struggle with feeling pressured to bring their work home with them. As long as you communicate with your team members, its almost never an issue. If you are ever struggling with your workload, let someone know and everyone is more than willing to help out so that doesn't become a necessity.
yes
What would you change about HubSpot?
Top Employee Response
Sales Managers can be a bit obtuse.
I would like to see more diversity
Pay market rates. Better middle management training. Better cross department work.
What's the office vibe like at HubSpot?
Top Employee Response
Relaxed but focused on work. People talk about work at lunch. You can come and go as you please without anyone raising an eyebrow, which is nice for those of us with young families especially.
Very fast-paced, but supportive. Lots of opportunities for personal and professional growth, but the overall vibe is what you'd expect from a group genuinely interested in helping.
Relaxed and happy. People genuinely like coming into work everyday.
What are you most excited about working at HubSpot?
Top Employee Response
We're tackling huge problems in smart, agile, egalitarian ways on the People Operations team.
I think that this is only the beginning for this company. We're really changing the way small and medium sized businesses operate in terms of their marketing and sales.
HubSpot Academy. It's going to change the world of business education.
What interview questions does HubSpot ask?
1) Can you tell me about a time you tried to do something and failed? 2) Tell me about a time you received negative feedback from your boss. How did that make you feel? 3) Can you tell me about a conflict at work that made you feel frustrated? 4) Tell me about a hobby you like to do outside of work. Can you teach me about it? 5) What would your co-workers say is the most rewarding thing about working with you? What about the most challenging thing? 6) Can you tell me about a time you needed to ask for help on a project?
Depends on the department. Engineering does typical stuff but also pokes at empathy and willingness to teach and learn.
Too many to list
How much diversity is there among employees at HubSpot?
Top Employee Response
We're always trying to improve in this area, but better than most I've seen.
Hardly any. Was very surprised that we won an award for diversity. Some departments have a lot of diversity because they are so large, but other smaller departments hardly have any. This could be improved on.
It's pretty horrible. Countless stories of people of color leaving in droves.
What are the team outings like at HubSpot?
Typically an evening activity + dinner and/or drinks.
THE BEST!
Fantastic - they spend a lot of money on outings for its employees
How difficult is it to maintain a social life while in your job at HubSpot?
Top Employee Response
Not difficult. Work life balance is a premium aspect of HubSpot. Get your work done and then no one cares about the hours you put in.
It depends on what team you're on, along with your definition of "social life."
People at HubSpot have become part of my social circle, they just amazing people to be around. This has actually IMPROVED my social circle!
How can I improve my chances of being hired at HubSpot?
Top Employee Response
Learn about the company. Do your research before the interview. Know what INBOUND marketing is and what HubSpot does when you speak to the recruiter. So many people don't do this for some reason. Relax during the interview; culture fit is so important. Being nervous is normal and okay, but just be yourself.
Quantifiable success in your prior roles, and rocking the roleplay.
Feedback, experience, networking.
What are your coworkers at HubSpot like?
My coworkers are the reason I show up everyday. The work is fulfilling but the people I work with are so smart and honestly the reason work is so amazing.
Whip smart and pretty self-aware. You can get feedback from your peers (if you're willing to ask and to hear).
Best team I've ever worked with. Humility as a personality trait is taken very seriously during the interview process.
How common is it to switch departments or teams at HubSpot?
Top Employee Response
Departments: Rare, that's usually a whole career shift. Teams: Possible but not super likely. Once you've built a rapport with your team you usually stick with them.
Incredibly common! Many people at HubSpot start in one department like Services and end up in others like Product or Marketing. It's our hope that you find out what you are passionate about during your time with us.
People can switch if they want/need to but it is not that frequent
Does HubSpot have any remote positions?
Yes, but they seem to be given out based on an ill-defined tenure metric.
Yup.
Yes. We have an entire remote team in Customer Support and most positions allow you to work from home as much as is necessary while using good judgement.
What benefits does HubSpot provide?
We're dedicated to building an inclusive culture where employees can do their best work. Feedback, research, and our own employees show that the number one way to do that is by being flexible. Giving HubSpotters the freedom and flexibility to create their own work-life balance builds trust in our company, but it’s also just the right thing to do. That’s why flexibility is at the core of our benefits and culture, from family planning to financial planning. Learn more here: https://www.hubspot.com/jobs/culture/employee-benefits

How challenged are you at HubSpot?
Daily. In a good way.
Ha! Extremely. It's probably a little harder than it needs to be across the board, but that leads to a lot of personal and professional (and financial) growth that I admit I wouldn't trade.
Very. Meaty projects.
What kind of people succeed at HubSpot?
The people that have been with the company for years.
People who win the respect of their peers, above all else.
Smart & motivated & mission-driven.
How much and how often do raises happen at HubSpot?
About to get my first raise at the year 3 mark.
I've never seen it happen.
There is a yearly compensation cycle but increases are given outside of the cycle if there is any anomaly or promotion throughout the year
What unique perks and benefits does HubSpot provide?

Unlimited sick/vacation -- irreplaceable. Dog policy -- even though it hardly exists, it could be a lot better. Work from home -- I wouldn't be as happy if I didn't have that option.

What's the office layout like at HubSpot?
Open floor plan, standing desks, bright and energetic.
A bunch of smaller offices called neighborhoods. No office offices to speak of. Rows of cubes, open layout.
A bunch of different spaces that are open. You can easily never see anyone but the people that are in your location.
What's the company culture like at HubSpot?
Top Employee Response
It's really, really awesome. I attribute it to Humility being a key evaluation factor during the recruiting and onboarding processes.
Awesome. The best.
It's relaxed and built around your life. There's a group for every individual. You will be able to make long lasting friendships here and learn every step of the way.
What should I wear for an interview at HubSpot?
Business Casual + Blazer.
There's no need to dress up that much. Wear what you feel comfortable wearing everyday of the week. This is not to say don't put any effort into your look. Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and make you look confident.
HubSpot is pretty casual but for an interview I'd shoot for business casual. Even jeans can be paired with a nice shirt and you'll be just fine. Check out this article from one of HubSpot's recruiters on what to wear to your interview: https://www.hubspot.com/careers-blog/what-to-wear-for-a-tech-job-interview Remember- you're going to perform best if you are comfortable!
What was the most difficult question that was asked during your interview at HubSpot?
I was asked about a specific marketplace, and what the future challenges for that market would be.
Coming up with a time I failed and what I learned from it.
Teach me something.
How would you compare interviewing at HubSpot to other places you've interviewed?
Excellent. Sometimes people think the process is long, or the interviews are lengthy but HubSpot takes pride in their employees and wants to ensure they are picking the right people to join their teams. It's a good thing!
Managers are very inexperienced, which plays out in different ways. Other roles seem to be on point.
Straight forward at HubSpot---but interviewer experience does vary manager to manager
How's the work life balance at HubSpot?
Employees are encouraged to work from home and come in and leave the office when it works best for them. Our Culture Code states that “Results matter more than the hours we work.” What matters most is the impact employees can have by doing great work; but we don’t track where or when that work happens across the majority of the organization. At HubSpot, you have the flexibility to take your daughter to soccer practice, beat rush hour traffic, or take your favorite fitness class in the middle of the day.
I can work the hours I want, but the work is pretty interesting and I have trouble turning off the thinking about it when I'm outside of work.
People can work whenever they want and where-ever they want so long as they get their work done
What do people at HubSpot think about the CEO? What do they do well and what can they improve?
Brian is well known, knows tons (!) of employees by name and role and is enormously popular. He's put a lot of work into leveling up every year and not staying static. He posts his 360 review on the wiki for anyone to read (!!)
CEO is great. Ranked high for a reason.
They like him
How's the feedback proccess at HubSpot?
Significant variation in quality depending on your role, leadership, and performance.
I just got an exhaustive 360 degree review -- worth its weight in gold
Depends who gives it.
