At Stop & Shop, we know your grocery list is more than a list. It’s a window into your life. That’s why at Stop & Shop we’re committed to feeding all of life’s moments. We accomplish this by providing our customers a wide assortment of items they care about - with a focus on fresh, healthy options at a great value.
At Stop & Shop, we always keep sustainability in mind when making key decisions. We’re proud of our partnership with Flashfood to offer another way for shoppers to save while also helping the environment. Flashfood is an app-based marketplace that strives to eliminate retail food waste by connecting shoppers with discounted food nearing its best-buy date at their local Stop & Shop store. We source products that meet strict standards, including better farming methods and treatment of workers. Look for the Rainforest Alliance Certified™, Fair Trade or UTZ certified logos to help support these social and environmental practices. And, we’re proud that 100% of the seafood sold from our service counters is sustainably and responsibly sourced.
We are an industry leader in reducing plastic bag waste, and we've successfully removed over 1 billion plastic bags from the waste stream. We save almost 2 million trees each year by recycling cardboard. And our Restore program offsets fuel emissions from our fuel stations by planting trees and investing in local environmental programs. We actively work to reduce carbon emissions through programs like our GreenChill partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency, where we collaborate to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change. Stop & Shop diverts nearly 75% of waste generated by our stores to someplace other than a landfill either through donations, composting, recycling, or our Green Energy Facility – an anaerobic digester that turns unsold food that can’t be donated into energy. The power created by the Green Energy Facility is capable of producing up to 40% of the electricity for Stop & Shop’s 1.1 million square-foot Freetown Distribution Center. We have bigger goals too, including sourcing and selling only cage-free eggs by 2025 and reducing food loss and waste in our operations by 50 percent by the year 2030.
At the center of all that we do is a real commitment to caring for our communities. Together with our customers and supplier partners, Stop & Shop donates more than $41 million annually to support our communities. We believe it’s our responsibility to help end hunger in the cities and towns we serve. We do this through healthy food distributions, by donating food from our stores to food banks and by establishing food pantries at hundreds of local schools to help students remain nourished. We invite our customers to join our giving, and every year they help donate millions of dollars to fighting hunger and funding pediatric cancer and breast cancer research and care. We are dedicated to honoring and serving those who served us all through grants, sponsorships and food support to service members, veterans and their families. We also support nonprofit organizations our associates are passionate about through our Beyond the Aisles grant program. Associates can apply for product donations or Stop & Shop gift cards to help them make a personal impact in their community.
We also proudly stand for inclusion and opportunity for all, and we’re committed to making a difference by supporting key partners who are helping those in underrepresented communities. We’re building long-term relationships with partners to drive real change in our communities.
