Executive Bio

Jan A. A. van der Bijl has been Head of Group Taxation at Unilever N. V. and Unilever PLC since July 1, 2001. Mr. Van der Bijl served as Joint Secretary of Unilever PLC and Unilever N. V since July 1, 2001. He joined Unilever in August 1987 where he became a member of Unilever's Tax Executive and he was appointed Head of Corporate Tax Department in March 2000. In 1974, he joined the Dutch Ministry of Finance where he worked in several departments during the next ten years and was involved primarily in negotiations on European tax harmonization in Brussels. In 1984, Mr. Van der Bijl left the Ministry of Finance and became the Director of Fiscal Affairs of the Dutch Federation of Industry (VNO-NCW). He is Chairman of the Fiscal Affairs Group of the Union of European Industrial and Employers' Confederations (UNICE) and of the tax committee of the European Round Table (ERT). Mr. Van der Bijl is a Member of the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD (BIAC); and of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). He serves as General Treasurer of the International Fiscal Association (IFA). Mr. Van der Bijl holds a Master's degree in fiscal law from the University of Leiden.
