Q&A With Wayfair Employees

Regardless of title or tenure, everyone at Wayfair works together to achieve the same goals. We’re customer—centric, highly collaborative, and focused on results. All team members are empowered to take smart risks, embrace ownership, and grow personally and professionally.

How employees describe working at Wayfair

I worked at Wayfair as an Account Manager for six months. The $40K base salary was low, and commissions were inconsistent due to ever-changing quotas. Management was inexperienced and unsupportive. The role lacked stability, with constant process changes and aggressive sales tactics.

  • Equity is a heavy component of the compensation package. On top of that, unlimited PTO for managers, decent health plan, 401(k) match, and various partner discounts are all helpful.

  • 401k matching up to 1st 5% of annual income. Stock options. Free snacks. Really good vacation policy. Really good parental paid leaves. Good insurance options.

  • Open office. Pretty much no walls or cubes. Standing desks. Home-furniture themed collaboration spaces sprinkled throughout each floor and of course conference rooms with walls painted in Wayfair colors. Plenty of micro-kitchens and 3 large cafeteria spaces. Free/unlimited snacks as well on our "snack walls", though the food is a lot more on the unhealthy side. But at least we get fresh fruit every day!

  • Very open

Asked to all employees at Wayfair

  • Pods, or your smaller team you see every day - Everyone gets $20 compensated towards team-bonding events, we call these "Pod Outings". For this, you and your teammates choose where to go and get part of it or all of it reimbursed ($20/person). Most people in the Boston HQ go to bars nearby. Department-wide outings: It can vary. If you or someone else has a good idea, pitch it and start it! Wayfair will compensate for it in most cases. The outings can vary. In my Engineering dept, we've had kayaking, laser tag, bars, and Boda-Borging from what I've seen.

Asked to the Engineering Department at Wayfair

  • I can't say for other teams but in my department within Engineering, its a pretty friendly vibe. Very collaborative as we work fast. If you're a bit introverted, you may feel like others around you within your department gets a bit clique-y but they're not excluding to be mean or anything -- I think this is pretty typical in general for a lot of places. As far as work goes, if you ask for help, someone will always get back to you on it and/or explain any context to help you ramp up, or direct you to someone who best knows the answer. I've never been turned away whenever I needed help, and a huge part of why I enjoy working at Wayfair is because of the people and collaborative environment. -- Many people work around 8-9 hours. You'll have the occasional deploy in which you might have to come in earlier or something (only happened to me once), but it's really not a big deal if you're in the general Software Engineering role. Some people work more, mostly due to larger projects' needs.
