How employees describe working at Capital One

A welcoming environment with good colleagues.

Review from Product Dept

The people I deal with keep their word

Customer service. Both your customer service representative and her supervisor could not give me an answer to my inquiries.

Look at services from customer standpoint

Follow-up on customer requests. Have spoken with Cust Svce on 4 occasions over the past 4 months. Each time I was promised the information I requested within 4 weeks. Never happened. The last time I called the rep also promised a call back to provide progress. Still waiting.

Basics. Nothing particularly exceptional compared to other large companies.

  • 401k match, health, dental, even free back up coverage for your kids up to 15 days per year, on-site gym and health center at some locations, tuition reimbursement, I’m probably forgetting much more. Also, working for a well known and reputable company like Capital One is in and of itself a benefit. Major resume booster.

  • Solid Health and 401K package.

    Currently very low morale.

  • Desperate, worried, and political (who should I stab to save myself?)

  • Depends on your department and manager. But generally very casual, more start up/tech-like than your generic bank or finance institutions. Most folks don’t show up in a suit and tie (one of our former VPs wears a polo shirt, jeans and sneakers every day) unless you’re a banker/branch associate or an external consultant on-site.

Senior leadership and managers don't seem to care at all about their employees' efforts, contributions or happiness. Politics are unbelievably difficult and impossible to get anything done. Turnover is rampant as a result. There is no direction or excitement in what we're trying to build.

  • Definitely the regressive performance management system. The system itself isn't so much the issue. The implementation by fairly weak people managers. As you move up the system becomes more of a beauty contest of who you know and what they think of you. This results on lots of meetings where problems are admired and bold statements are made in preparation for the next meeting. Don't get me wrong. Capital One is a great place to work and you can learn a ton. But you have to be willing to play the games along the way or your annual bonus will suffer.

  • Toxic managers.

  • Depends on the role. If you're going for a tech or product role, you are kind of frowned upon for doing the full suit.

  • Business casual attire.

  • Capital one has a business casual dress code for associates Howe we they do ask you to dress more professionally for interviews. I would recommend a collared button down and slacks , a dress or blouse with slacks or a skirt.

  • Removing the stack ranked performance management system. It’s, by far, the biggest drag on culture at Capital One, and better (but not perfect) options exist.

  • Offer more support to families with subsidized on site childcare. I would be more likely to stay later if that existed knowing I didn't have to fight traffic to pick up my kid on time. Create equal perks at locations. Some locations have a lack of afford food options and little to no snacks. Some locations don't have a gym or access to gym classes or a trainer.

  • I would simplify the performance management process.

  • Met with the hiring manager. A few days.

  • Depends. You will meet with at least 4-5 people in person, maybe 3 phone interviews before that inclusive of HR. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the company as well so take the chance to also interview folks who you may or may not work with directly. Callbacks and offers also depend. If they think you’re a good fit, everything will move fairly quickly.

They get as precise as they can be with the overall process, next steps and what to expect. Longer, with more interviewers overall than some places, but again depends on your role and title.

  • I believe they do, some from my team worked remote but on a case-by-case basis.

  • Yes. Tons.

  • Yes! There are Work at Home call center positions, and we also have a variety of roles and teams that allow remote work in other areas of the company. Capital One is a flexible environment and many people work a mix of time in a people center and remotely. With that said, we are an Agile company so teams generally succeed more when teammates are co-located in order to more quickly and easily collaborate.
