AmEx nature and structure allow, even invite, with what is in my opinion likely more positive result than with other financial companies, my explanation to the Company of certain unusual aspects in my big case, with follow-on writing elsewhere from my desk benefitting me, AmEx and many others.

  • As part of projects, you have to work late to accommodate US time zone and Asia Pacific time zones.

  • Continued from previous response.. 3) Documentation: No single document maintened depicting Business Requirements and SRS. Rally has thousands of user stories for each feature, but let's say if anyone wants to understand the application end to end, it becomes impossible. They can't scan through ten thousand user stories. There should be a consolidated document for all business requirements and should be updated regularly. Product owners can move, Tech team members can move, in that situation it'll be night mare to decipher the requirements from code. In case we migrate the application to a different technology, without single document it will be nightmare.. you can see examples of any application in Amex.. we don't learn from mistakes in Amex

    Amex is so big we frequently have competing objectives. It would be nice if we could streamline that, but it's not realistic

  • There’s a lot of bureaucracy and passive aggressiveness in the management style. There are definitely “popular” employees that receive better treatment than others.

  • Find a way to create a level playing field for all parties to give employees the confidence that growth isn't going to be shunted because of politics or brown-nosing by their peers.

    American Express provides standard health insurance, Generous Paid Time Off, Retirement Savings, Flextime, Telecommute

  • High deductible health insurance, dental, vision, 6% 401k match. Performance based bonuses which can get very good for top performers. Overall though, the best benefit is the flexible work style.

  • Not as great as one would hope - growth opportunities are limited and marred with political and brown-nosing individuals. While the stock maybe rising, employees struggle with the lack of acknowledgement from leaders who seem to be on the lookout for their personal growth versus that of the teams that they support.

    Amex is currently becoming a high pressure environment as there are economic forces at hand related to the decline in Consumer spending overall and there appears to be only traditional solutions to the same problems (layoffs, increasing lending risk and volatility in the provisions for loan losses, continued outsourcing of entire functions)

  • Clear your personal life, you'll work a ton of hours. Expect your first week to be sorting out onboarding and taking mandatory trainings. The best groups assign you a buddy so ask for one.

  • Listen and be prepared to absorb information quickly.

  • Try to get the lay of the land. This is a relationship based company so try to really get an understanding of who your key partners will be, what they do, and what they don't do.

  • Cheap. Don't expect nice meals. Annual team event is like $50 budget for dinner. You can't even find places to go eat in NYC for that amount. We don't have Christmas parties anymore, just free lunch in the cafeteria!

  • If you're leader likes you (not necessarily because your good at your job), you will get promoted. They value loyalty over competence. If your leader does not like you, you will never get promoted despite being hard working, smart and a solid performer. The place is toxic.

  • A list is already prepared and the process is just a farce

  • Promotions are mostly made by friends of friends. I witnessed several promotions based on articulation versus skills, and this was the pivotal undoing of a highly technical team. Leadership and analyst positions were made based on how much the interviewer(s) liked a candidate. No real evidence of technical skill or competence were major factors in the candidates' promotion.
