Overall, it has been fantastic. Of course, there have been ups and downs. But the company has rewarded me with a good salary and benefits and has invested in me for professional training and THOUSANDS of dollars in legal review bills to run investigative stories.

They are working diligently to try to figure out how to keep legacy media in business.

Doing journalism that makes a substantive difference in my community and being respected by others in the community.
What is the best part about your compensation package?
Salary, PTO is extremely generous. This year, my 25th with the company, I was rewarded with 7 weeks of PTO. Wow!
What did you like most about the interview process?
Well, it was 20 years ago, and a lot has changed. But it was thorough and I was asked a lot of probing questions.
What is most positive about the culture and environment at your company?
The most positive thing about my company is my bosses allow me to do good investigative work. The most negative thing about my company is the folks in the union who have created a hostile work environment.
What do you like best about your company?
The company has invested in me financially with a fair, generous salary and PTO. The company also has provided me with out-of-state training at national conferences, and it has given me the freedom to pursue investigative stories.
What are some of the best things about your team?
My editor and deputy managing editor are fair with me and provide me the tools and opportunities to do outstanding investigative journalism. The other investigative reporter on the team is top notch, and she and I work extremely well together on projects and in-depth stories.
What would you most like to see improved at your company?
Larger raises to employees who produce excellent work. Too often those at the top of the pay scale are told the company cannot afford to give raises or more than 1-2 percent because it needs to use the raise pool to help lower-paid employees, who in my opinion do not do similar quality work.
