Frequently Asked Questions About Medscape

  • The majority of the surveys you have been invited to are developed by our clients. These clients set the specific criteria and parameters for which they are searching.

Your expertise, years in practice, or any other targeted information may be different from the specified needs of conducting research for this particular survey.

If you did not qualify or if the maximum number of survey responses was reached, you will be entered into a sweepstake. This sweepstake gives all entered a chance to win $50.00 Amazon.com gift cards. For rules and more information: https://www.medscape.com/promo/public/marketresearch/rules?activityId=16236

  • First please try the following:

    1. Log into www.medscape.com. You will know if you’re logged in by seeing your first initial and last name in the upper-right corner.

    2. From the homepage click on Medscape CME which is located on the upper-left corner. You can also go directly to http://cme.medscape.com.

    3. On that page click on CME Tracker in the upper-right corner.

    4. Go to “Total Credits Earned from” and change the date to reflect the time in which you completed earlier activities. Click the “Change Date Range” button and you should see your total credits for that time period.

Any CME activities that you have completed on the Medscape site will show up in the tracker.

If you see some, but not all of your CME/CE credits in your Tracker, or if you are seeing a different Education Tracker on the Medscape app as opposed to the Medscape site, then it is possible that you may have created more than one Medscape account. If you believe this to be the case, please select 'Contact Us' at the top of this page, and select the 'Update My Profile' category and 'Other Profile Changes' subcategory. Please include asmany of the following details as possible:

Any email addresses you may have used when registering (whether a currently valid email or not)

    Your Medscape username(s)

The zip code/postal code you entered when registering

Your full first and last name

    Your date of birth

The profession and medical specialty you chose at registration

Once we are able to confirm that you are the owner of any duplicate accounts, we will merge them into your correct/current Medscape account to consolidate all information.

  • The terms content preferences and specialty are currently used interchangeably within the different Medscape App platforms. This can lead to some confusion. Android uses will see the term ' Content Preferences' while, iOS users will see the option listed as 'Speciality. In reality, all App platforms shoud list this selection as 'Content Preferences', since specialities can only be changed via our website.

The 'specialty' cannot be updated on the Medscape App ; this can only be done via your online www.medscape.com profile. To update your specialty, please refer to Changing specialty homepage

Via App, however, you may update the 'content preference' you are interested in reading. Please keep in mind that this selection will only be saved locally. Meaning, if you uninstall or sign out of the App, the content preference will revert to the original content selected on your Medscape.com profile - "Online profile always wins over the App".

When using an Android device, you will be able to change your content by selecting “Content Preferences” and selecting the specialty you wish to read about.

  • If an activity is certified for physician CME, then the CME certificate issued to physicians is for earning AMA PRA Category 1 credit.

Activities certified for physicians may also be eligible for American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) points.

In these cases, upon successful completion of the activity, ABIM Diplomates may opt in for their ABIM MOC points to be transmitted to ABIM via the ACCME PARS system.

Some physician activities may also be accredited for American Academy of Family Physician (AAFP) credit. In these cases, this will appear in the accreditation statement and on the CME certificate.

Any other professional (not registered as a physician) will receive a letter of completion (LOC) certificate.

The CME Tracker shows MOC points and CME credits as well as LOC credits for physicians. LOCs are issued for credits earned by a physician for activities that were not certified for physician CME.

If an activity is certified for nurse CE, then nurses will receive a CE certificate for ANCC nurse CE credit.

The CE Tracker shows CE credits and LOC credits for nurses. LOCs are issued for credits earned by a nurse for activities that were not certified for nurse CE.

If an activity is certified for pharmacist CE, then pharmacists will receive a CE Statement of Credit that explains that their ACPE credit will be transmitted to CPE Monitor.

The CE Tracker shows CE credits and LOC credits for pharmacists. LOCs are issued for credits earned by a pharmacist for activities that were not certified for pharmacist CE.

Any professional other than one whom an activity is certified for will receive an LOC which will state the credit for which the activity was designated. You will need to check with your individual licensing board or certification organization to determine whether the credit will be accepted.

If an activity is certified for physicians, the LOC will state that the activity was designated AMA PRA Category 1 credit, as many other professions can use credit for activities designated for AMA PRA Category 1.

If the activity is not certified for physicians, than the LOC will contain the credit designation statement for the applicable credit that the activity is certified for (ie, ANCC or ACPE).

The Credit Type column in all trackers shows the credit type for each activity.

  • Consult is a crowdsourced community of physicians and medical students. Community members often post cases while their patients' treatment is ongoing, seeking clinical guidance from peers. We encourage Consult contributors to provide updates and outcomes whenever possible.

Here are some suggestions for finding case updates and outcomes on Consult:

FOLLOW A CASE: If you use the Medscape App and follow a case, you will receive push notifications on your phone when there are comments on these cases. (Please note: Currently, you will receive a notification for every reply. To turn off notifications, unfollow the case.)

FEATURED TAB: Look for the case in the "Featured" feed. We add "RESOLVED" or "UPDATE" when a case author has posted an outcome, and we duplicate the response at the top of the comment thread. This tab also features cases with expert recommendations.

AUTHOR PROFILE: Visit the case author's profile (click on the name) and look in the "Responses" feed to find updates and outcomes on specific cases from that author. If you follow an author, you can also find posts by navigating to your profile and then selecting the author's name from your "Following" list.

ASK THE AUTHOR: Comment on a post, requesting that the author add an outcome.

Medscape cannot guarantee that these credits will be accepted by your state board. Please contact your professional licensing board before participating in an activity to determine whether they will accept these credits.

  • The Medscape Reference Cases are a series of real patient presentations distributed via email to healthcare practitioners around the world. Our mission is to educate health care providers regarding the clinical presentation, diagnosis, management, and complications of a wide range of disorders in all areas of medicine.

    Examples of Cases:

Progressive Weakness and Numbness With a Long History of Back Pain

Mysterious Bruising, Weakness, Back Pain, and Gum Bleeds

Each Case should include the following:

A clinical patient presentation with a broad appeal to a general clinical audience that falls into one or more of these categories:

A commonly encountered medical condition (eg, cholecystitis, appendicitis, incarcerated hernia)

A relatively less common, but "cannot miss" diagnosis associated with a common presentation (eg, aortic dissection for a patient with chest pain; epiploic appendagitis in a patient with right lower quadrant pain)

An interesting medical condition (eg, herpes zoster oticus, pneumatosis intestinalis)

A regional disease or condition (eg, dracunculiasis, coccidioidomycosis)

Associated multimedia resources with sufficient resolution:

Digitized imaging studies, such as a plain radiographs, ultrasound images, or a CT scan image

Digital photographs of physical examination findings

    Digitized or scanned electrocardiograms

Video clips of ultrasound examinations or physical examination findings

    Digitized histopathology slides

A discussion of the disease, syndrome, or condition, including:

A general description of how the diagnosis was made

    Epidemiology of the condition

    Typical and atypical clinical presentations

    Useful diagnostic studies

    The differential diagnosis

    Complications associated with the condition

    Typical and atypical treatment

Clinical course of the patient presented in the case

Possible responses within 4 weeks of submission

    Accepted without revisions

    Accepted with revisions

If your case receives an "accepted with revisions" status, you will be expected to make the necessary changes as suggested by the medical editor of the case. Generally, your case will be published within a 2- to 3-month time frame, but the editors reserve the right to suspend the case for an indefinite period.

    Not Accepted

If your case is initially not accepted, you may resubmit if you modify your case to more closely comply with the guidelines or address specific issues with the case.

The decision to suspend a case may be made for a number of reasons, such as if another case on a similar topic was recently published or if there are difficulties or delays in obtaining copyright clearances or in processing the multimedia used in the case.

    Submit cases or questions

Please send your note of interest, details of your case submission, or questions to [email protected]
