Promotions are based on years in a position instead of skill. Zero chance of promotion based on skills/accomplishments.
Do people talk throughout the day or is the vibe pretty quiet there?
Depends on where you are. I talk all day but my coworkers may hate me for it.
Lots of group trips to the coffee shop (in the building), sharing of technical issues and collaboration, hallway discussions (mostly about work but could be about kids or why my car is making a funny noise). Most jobs are team efforts so there are always interactions to get information, ask questions, meetings, design reviews, and lunchtime discussions where we solve world problems. It's a people centric company, that's where the knowledge is and we work to spread it around freely to whoever wants to learn.

Fun/interesting work.
Great variety of work, always something new to work on. Coworkers are genuinely helpful and freely share information.
Do you see coworkers typically caring about the work they do?
Less than I’d like but the work can be very compelling. I chalk it up to a lack of individual initiative when I see someone not care about what they’re doing, not an organizational failure.
Absolutely, the work we do is of paramount importance, people's lives depend on our systems and we ensure they perform with margin to spare. Employees take ownership of their their designs and are committed to excellence and reliability.

I was there so long ago. I think most of us felt more removed due to the fact that the HQ is in a different state. I don't remember hearing any comments about the CEO at all.
