How employees describe working at Safeway
You took over shoppers at green spring shopping center about a month ago. We expected a nice store with upgrades like the on in Towson or owing mills. Instead we got a store that is half empty, old products, no lighting, dirty and uninviting store. We feel like you are dumping your worst here

Safeway has no soul. They wont let people wait for cancellation or no shows for vaccine.
I have been a customer of Safeway for over 30years. And looking for a career change, based on the store at 7th Street and Glendale the employees always were happy. At Fountain HIlls is not the same.
I can count on quality from Safeway and the employees are their biggest strength.

How does Safeway make decisions around promotions?
They hire from outside the store and promote people who haven't been in that field before.

I think the term in radio was "Payola"? Vendors buy displays in one way or another.
How's the leadership on the Sales team at Safeway?
It's a joke. The leadership and management are horrible and worthless. They take sides yet demand everyone works as a team.
Management is lacking in leadership skills.
Store level, ok at best. Corporate level, very poor
What's the office vibe like at Safeway?
Bad.
Not very friendly. Told they have an open door policy but it is not.
Fun, energetic, easy-going and relaxing.
How much and how often do raises happen at Safeway?
Safeway doesn't do raises.
Almost never
Not very often. 2 other employees in my department maker the same amount of money that I do and I've been there longer and I've been capped. The quarter raise they used to give us does not happen any longer

Just the benefits would be a perk.

Discounts at various stores, medical benefits, retirement benefits, the allowance to join the local Union, and so on.
What's one thing you wish you'd known before joining Safeway?
That I shouldn't have applied.
That they would get bought out by Albertsons, it's not as fun under the new umbrella

I don't.

What part of Safeway's business is growing fastest? What part is having difficulties?
While not something to brag about, the turnover rate is increasing. Overall I'd say the entire store is having difficulties.

How do I do well in an interview at Safeway?
Just show up on time in presentable attire and say what they want to hear.
Be yourself and let them know how much of an asset you would for the company

How would you compare interviewing at Safeway to other places you've interviewed?
Definitely a more positive interview than others I've had.
Safeway and the other places are very similar.

Who did you meet with during your interview? And how long did it take to hear back from Safeway?
I met with a store PIC who conducted the interview and heard back from him the same day. It probably wasn't more than a couple of hours when I got the phone call.

How can I improve my chances of being hired at Safeway?
You don't have to try hard. Can bug a department manager until they give in and have the hiring manager give you an interview.
Of being hired, just show up on time and say what they want to hear. Contrary to popular belief you don't need a high school diploma or GED to get hired.

That's the only positive thing about Safeway.

How's the work life balance at Safeway?
Ok. But management does not communicate well with us. They think they have said something to us but never did and get mad when we say they never spoke to us about it before.

Working in retail is hard, must like talking to people and following a lot of rules, and working multiple shifts.
What benefits does Safeway provide?
Good ones. Medical, dental, and vision at a reasonable cost to the employee.
Insurance after one year. And 10 and 5 percent off grocery shopping.

What is the dress code at Safeway?
Can I wear a long sleeved white shirt under Safeway shirt?
Black polo shirt, black slacks, black slip-resistant shoes. Where applicable, black baseball cap with the Safeway logo and/or black apron with the Safeway logo.
How are the dental insurance options at Safeway?
Decent. Can't recall the exact number off the top of my head, but you get a set amount each year. Copays do not go towards this. If you go over the allotted amount, it is out of pocket.
I don't have anything to compare with Safeway's dental insurance options, but they are decent from what I hear. Been to one particular dentist with $1,400 worth of work they do without a copay. Exceed the amount and it's out of pocket.
What kinds of community outreach does Safeway participate in?
None, really. The occasional little container for charity where some people dump their change.
Occasionally a charity. Safeway's biggest participation is within itself. So many programs devoted to helping other employees.
How does Safeway measure success and growth in the Sales department?
They don't. If the department is failing, it's YOUR fault. But if it's succeeding, corporate takes the credit.
They have the bare minimum of employees and expect them to do the work of twice as many people. It's the employees' fault that sales aren't up.
What's the work from home policy like at Safeway?
There is no such policy.

It's not flexible at all.

What does the ideal candidate in the Sales department look like at Safeway?
Prior experience in that department only because the training is lacking due to being so short handed.
I would like to say me, but that is not true, try as you might some people are not very people focused.

Been so long ago I can't recall what questions were asked during an interview.
