Asked to the Engineering Department at Under Armour

  • There are two Engineering Departments in Under Armour - E-Commerce and Connected Fitness. Work life balance in Connected Fitness (I can't speak for e-commerce) is really good. I don't personally know anyone who works more than 40 hours / week. The offices are pretty empty by 6pm. People are of course on-call and occasionally work off-hours during incidents but most teams understand that there's an inherent ebb and flow to on-call work so engineers often take a bit of off time the following morning if they were up late responding to a page, etc.

  • The primary factor is how well the company is doing financially. I've seen undeserving people get promoted when things are going well, and deserving people get passed over when times got tougher. Aside from that though, it's like any other company. You will get promoted when you demonstrate you're ready, when you build overwhelming support, and when the next role is available.

They should really try building a story behind products with cultural input, as opposed to "Steph Curry's birthday is 3/14, lets put a slice of damn pie on 3 shirts and call it a "carefully curated capsule collection"
