UTSW is a large institution with many different departments which all will have different office styles, not one-size-fits-all. I work in a division within the psychiatry department and it is pretty laid back in-office. PRO-my dress is business casual, heels and suit certainly not required. We have leave request forms for taking time off and we submit timesheets every 2 weeks to our supervisor. Lunch is usually an hour or a half-hour, we work out schedule with supervisor. As a whole institution: Exempt employees don't get paid overtime (can take up to 4hr off without recording vacation/sick time because it's expected they're having to stay overtime some days); non-exempt employees swipe in and out on time cards and have to request in advance if need to work overtime. CON-get paid once a month on the 1st, rather than biweekly.

  • Two word, confusing and stressful

  • Depends on the group you are in. Overall, there is a academic/state institiution vibe that you will feel to different degrees depending on what area you work in.

  • Vacation policy is pretty generous, starting at 3 weeks per year and going up from there with seniority. Sick days are separate from vacation.

  • Outside of good insurance and teacher retirement, there isn't much. They do have multiple eateries spread throughout the campus buildings. Otherwise, employees are required to pay for parking, the gym, which cost $40 a month, is inadequate when compared to other local health clubs (you can walk the campus for free). Which is unfortunate for a place that is supposed to promote health. They do have several employee discount programs local businesses.
