Q&A With AECOM Employees

Asked to all employees at AECOM

  • As an engineering company, there is lots of talent and thought leaders that bring innovative solutions to our clients.

  • From an engineering aspect it can be innovative if time is allowed to understand what is being asked to be done. Problems arise from letting good theoretical engineers loose on practical requirements. Seen too many projects that needed re-engineering after initial design. That’s spends the money!!

Asked to the Operations Department at AECOM

  • New work bookings and earnings. even when you beat goals each yr poor company performance makes it meaningless. Last year my group significantly beat all established metrics incentive comp was slashed by 40% by the end CFO. Oddly, Mr Burke and team earned their full income incentives because they are based on different metrics. That misalignment results in leadership focusing on cash flow while others who deliver strong financial results are penalized because of leadership decisions that result in poor overall performance. To make it worse, the current philosophy is to award smaller salary increases to “highly compensated employees” while increasing the incentive potential. That’s a great plan, but only if the incentive is based on personal performance. Historically my annual increases have exceeded 5% because my group outperformed every year. The last two years my annual increase has averaged 2.4% and my incentive based comp has been penalized. Yr over yr my total comp has declined

  • Overwork to the point of exhaustion and then want more.

Asked to the Operations Department at AECOM

  • Opportunities exist for the more junior employees due to exceptionally high voluntary attrition. However, at the SR management level, there is little opportunity for career growth. For those entering the workforce AECOM is a great place to build your resume but it’s not a place to have a career. Get a couple years of experience working on complex projects then move along to an employer that values you as an individual. Stay too long and you will find yourself in a position where it is difficult to leave.

  • Lots, everyone is quitting. High turnover!

  • As long as you work constantly, it doesn’t matter where you do it.

  • It is team dependent. I work from home alot but my home office is in one location, my project team is in another so I can be at home as much as possible.

  • Super flexible. I work in office from 9:30-3:30 to avoid traffic and get home in time to find parking. Then I am able to work from home after that.

  • I have a very flexible work schedule, lots of other people do not have such flexibility. It is very dependent on the team and your manager. That said, within teams it can be different for different people. Some people on my team are expected to be at their desks by a certain time (exactly) and take a specific time period for lunch and then be able to leave after a given time. I do not operate like that and do not work well under such school like conditions and have found a way to make it flexible for me. However, it does sometimes make me anxious.

Asked to the Engineering Department at AECOM

  • Department leadership is strong. Local office leadership is on the side of the employees. Corporate leadership seems to ignore our wants and needs.

  • There is no leadership, just managers. Projects rarely come in under budget.

  • Typical 2-weeks, 3-weeks after 5-years

  • Not great. In theory you get 15 days of PTO per year, but they don't provide any kind of sick days, so taking time off for any reason eats into your vacation time. Also, depending on your job, you may work 10 or 12 hour days, and because PTO is accrued in hours instead of days, you end up getting fewer days off total.
