Most people are not motivated to show their best self at work. Most of them are just getting by. We don't have a high performance culture because incentive is not there.
When I am working on project with motivated coworkers. I feel not embarrassed about me being motivated all the time. Most people would mock me for being motivated. They ask me "why try so hard"
It is very difficult to be recognize as a top performer. My boss told me 5 years straight that I perform at a 89% level. But only 10% of the employee is going to be recognized as a top performer. If I drop my productivity to 50% I will still make the same performance rating and paid the same amount.
