Executive Bio

Mr. James Bennet has been an Editor of Editorial Page at The New York Times Company since May 2016. Mr. Bennet is in charge of the paper's opinion pages, both in the newspaper and online. He oversees the editorial board, the Letters and Op-Ed departments, as well as the Editorial and Op-Ed sections of NYTimes.com. During his three years in Israel, his coverage of the Middle East conflict was widely acclaimed for its balance and sensitivity. His much-lauded long-form writing for The New York Times Magazine was responsible for catching the eye of David Bradley during his year-long search for a new editor. He began his journalism career at The Washington Monthly. Prior to his work in Jerusalem, he served as the Times' White House correspondent and was preparing to join its Beijing bureau when he was offered the Atlantic editorship. Before joining The Atlantic, Mr. Bennet worked for The Times for 15 years in several roles, including Detroit bureau chief, and Jerusalem bureau chief. He was staff writer for the Sunday Magazine. Mr. Bennet was an editor with The Washington Monthly. Before joining The Times, Mr. Bennet was Editor of Atlantic Media Company since 2006 until March 14, 2016. Mr. Bennet served as the president and editor in chief of Atlantic. Adweek and Ad Age named Mr. Bennet editor of the year in 2012 and 2009 respectively. He is a graduate of Yale University.
